Hi Piet, here's new engine start Saturday morning in four years, now with propeller. Check list complete, here we go.... After being befogged in oily smoke, I received a moralizing lecture from an adjacent owner....!!

Engine from three o clock view now. You see, that engine is smoking white. The reason is, that piston rings and seals are worn. But for ground runs, demonstrating the big sound of a big radial it is good enough. Enjoy it.

Another start, but engine was running out of round. After shutting down, I found the reason. Mesh of carburetor was covered with a protecting cloth !!!

On Thursday the 18-th of June, we started our engine again on the yard from Hans-Werner Bogie with very special thanks. An editor and a photograph from the famous magazine "Oldtimer Markt" visited us, writing a report about this Curtiss engine. Piet de Haan used this favorable opportunity for calibration of the carburetor. We are working hardly on a prop and we will hope, fixing the blades this...

Curtiss-Wright R-3350 32WA. With very special thanks to Piet de Haan and his son Ed, who woke up this monster in 32 years after storing in container. Pier Francesco Abortivi for this engine, Willie van Dommelen for spare parts, Gerry Nielsen from Neptune Aviation Services, Inc. for propeller and all manuals, Greg Shepard and his friend Jean-Pierre Parizon, shipping propeller for small amount, K...
Curtiss-Wright R-3350 32-WA, 18 Cylinder Radial Engine (Sternmotor), second start
มุมมอง 434K10 ปีที่แล้ว
Here you see the second start in 32 years. Most of oil (and white smoke) is blown out now, fire brigade returns back to the station. Problem is, that we don´t ask power with the result, that there isn`t any manifold pressure. So engine could unload with the result of backfiring.. Also we have to take care, that temperature of cylinder heads doesn`t rise up too hot to prevent ignition without sp...

    These engines sound incredible without a propeller distorting the noise. You can hear the supercharger whine which is very cool.

    Normally a club-prop is used to generate some airflow through the engine and to provide some load on the engine at the same time. Especially with a multirow radial that is not unimportant because the main rod and cascade gears for the timing can otherwise get damaged. But not having the prop in this case provides a very rare clear engine sound example of this highly complex compound engine with supercharger and PRTs. Absolutely love it.

    Hey I noticed these videos were uploaded quite some time ago but I was reaching out in the comments section in the hopes I could get in touch with someone who has a little more information regarding the Curtiss Wright 3350 engine. I work for a construction testing facility located in Southern California and we use this engine for some of our testing done at the facility. Unfortunately our current engine is experiencing some serious issues and were are trying to locate a new running engine. In addition to a getting a new motor we are hoping to meet or talk with an expert or someone who can help guide us or assist us in making sure our engine set up runs and performs optimally. If anyone at all has knowledge about these engines or could put me in contact with someone who does I would be forever grateful.

    I love these guys that don't have a clue. That engine was not designed to run without a prop, it loads the engine and provides cooling air. Put a shorty prop on it.

    I suspect they do not have a primer pump to start it up fast. The primed gas shoots directly into the super charge impeller before govener is engaged.

    Beautiful - may i ask a good forum or group that you could reccomend online who deal with these engines - i have the opportunity to pick one up , and its not exactly complete. But id love to dive into getting it running - i do all my own machine work so im confident about that side of it. But i would like to learn more on the ignition and fueling systems - and also figure out exactly what im missing and what is even available anymore - any groups or message boards you can reccomend? thank you.

    I feel like it's taken a beating from sitting so long? I really want to know more about these motors the fact that it was used in WW2 and other places where amazing people served, and how badass this thing sounds, but in the other video it was alot louder and pumped out more exhaust that's why I came to the conclusion that it's not on all cylinders? And even the first video seemed to have trouble with some of the top cylinders, seemed like the top exhaust was intermittent with the volume coming out only when they cranked on it seemed like some things are worn or plugged with carbon? Idk ...either way it's amazing and reminds me on a large scale of my 8.1l GMC that big ass motor makes all types of noises that come and go but it's reliable as hell! lol

    ❤ That Bad A Idle!!!! Sounds like my nasty 406 SBC big A roller cam radical choppy Idle! And ⚠️ BTW the term "Holy Smokes" for some reason came to mind when it fired up! Wow them bottom cylinders and valve seals definitely allow in some oil into the combustion chambers! I know that they'd have to hand crank these radials over by the props to be sure they weren't hydro-locked by too much oil in one or more cylinders! But this shows everyone exactly why the ground crews would run them props over a few times lol!

  • @8180634
    @8180634 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Seeing how much oil came out the bottom exhaust when it started, I'm guessing oil that leaked by the bottom pistons as it sat since its last run; is there a procedure for clearing any oil before starting to be sure the lower cylinders don't hydrolock and break something? Such as a mechanism to hold the exhaust valves open while you spin it over a few times, etc..?

  • @randymagnum143
    @randymagnum143 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think a little more effort cranking her through to clear oil pooled in the bottom cylinders would be in order before lighting her up.
