Hi, my name is My-Linh. I'm a dancer/artist from San Jose, California.
Endangered Perspectives: The Art of Teaching
Endangered Perspectives is a hybrid podcast documentary series that looks at shifts in culture, society, history and art through discussions about freestyle dance forms. This episode is about the art of teaching house and hip hop in the university and online, as well as the challenges and joys of teaching dance as a cultural subject rather than only technique.
Moncell Durden is a dance educator, choreographer, ethnographer, embodied historian, author and associate professor of practice at the University of Southern California’s Glorya Kaufman International School of Dance. He specializes in pedagogical practices that prove cultural and historical context in what he calls the morphology of Afro-kinetic memory. For more information about Moncell and upcoming courses, visit www.moncelldurden.com
Jardy Santiago is often credited with being the first to teach house dance online, thereby influencing countless dancers around the globe since his first TH-cam tutorials in 2009. Over the past decade he has developed his own method of teaching students how to freestyle through his online program, using foundational vocabulary inspired by the original house dancers of New York. To learn more about Jardy's program visit www.house-dance.com/courses/footwork-mastery-fall-2024/
**Please note that I originally interviewed three teachers. During the editing process, one of the interviewees requested to be removed from the final video entirely. Although I did my best to accommodate this request and maintain the integrity of the rest of the conversation, there may be moments throughout that seem somewhat disjointed or awkwardly unresponsive to the question or topic.**

In the other, a man calls upon the moon to separate him from his own shadow, ...

This is amazing !!
genuinely awesome video. loved hearing Prof. Durdens' takes on teaching dance and how to bridge cultural gaps within a dance setting with regard to styles and forms of expression that are enculturated within black spaces but potentially foreign within others. Much to think on.
Jesus thank you so much, so hungry for learning over here. Appreciate Moncells perspective so much, thank you for sharing!

Actually, should there really be a debate about who are the best ?
Thank you for this amazing work
First, let's get the basketball thing out of the way. European basketball players are by no means better but are more foundational sound. The reason for this is the type of basketball that is promoted and taught through at youth level until the NBA. As for the dance. Most dancers in Europe are aware of the origins of dance styles. OG's from the States give workshops and panel talks, and do tell us where we can improve. Such as music, I believe here in Europe we listen to the same type of music while the hip-hop music in the states is diverse. One thing I didn't agree with was about dancing with subtle moves and it not being focused on in Europe. Fusion concept doesn't represent all of Europe when it comes to battling. Hype plays a huge role in that competition, and a lot of dancers in Europe don't do fusion concept anymore because of what it has become and the Judging not being clear. As for SDF Hip-hop 2024 was questionable, but can you really consider it an European thing when you have judges from outside of Europe and dancers from all over the world participating. The eventual winner of this year made sense. One thing I noticed is when I see hip-hop battles in the US, you guys allow a lot more types of dancers to participate in the battles. A Hip-hop battle will have turfers, Chicago footwork dancers, and even lite feet dancers. While in Europe, you'll never see that because the debate will be "Is it hip-hop ?"
Regarding your last question: YESS! Because we don’t have history and we are constantly reminded by US teachers and OGs. Hip hop has never been social to us. We don’t dance within our families, with our parents, with our elders. We do not live it naturally. So we are obsessed by tags and definitions (EU dancers). Also, we are SO dominant-thinkers that we made ABC style more important than XYZ… We scrub “minority” dancers like krumpers, turfers, hustlers, lite feet dancers, etc

Hi bravo! 👋👋👋
Zack invented the Turffeinz. Justin formed the team. We are the inventors of that. Nobody motivated me to put turf in my name a song did.
When i made the Turffeinz jereil was not my motivation. Zack & Justin made the Turffeinz, that's my name. Come interview the real I'll tell you exactly how we started. Gary was a goonstar before he came to the Turffeinz.
WC has to be updated. I appreciate your way to some degree, but I believe my bοοk is what you need to go to the next level. It’s called Myths and blind spots in the fighting arts’ world. In one chapter I deal with WC greatly, exposing its fallacies, but also saving it in my opinion giving logical directions to its instructors. It is a great system (WC), and that is why it's a shame so much useless and dangerous fakery is in it; sure lineages differ, but at the end, most is the same. I am sure you will love reading it for many reasons, even though you likely will feel exposed in some ways, while vindicated in others, so I thought I'd suggest it to you. Wish you steps in the right direction.
Dr Son. Saw your TH-cam Bach Chaconne when you were in Boston. Congrats on your DMA. Ravishing tone and music. Very expressive dancer.
