I remember raising new Marion booms before they had the boom raising routines programmed into the PCR controls. It took about 3 days to install all the jumpers and set stalls that allowed you to get excitation and pull some current before you released the brakes. I used to have a Volt meter and million amp meter either on my lap or hanging g in front of me. Always remember what the amps were in case you had go stop and set brakes. Then you could come back to that amp setting before you released brakes so the restart of pulling the boom was always smooth. Then just watch the volt meter to be sure you had motor rotation. I always liked the man on top to keep talking all the time to be sure we still had communications. Long silent periods more than 15 seconds or more made me nervous then in the last 3 or 4 feet he needed to keep talking. I raised an 8200 boom one day and had go let it back down before the day was over. Boom (new machine) was at a noticeably wrong angle, way too low. Boom ropes were measured at correct length to match the drawing but the drawing was wrong. Had to remove them, get about 15 feet cut off, retest pull them and start all over again. Fortunately we were in South Africa and this service was locally available. The boom down on a Thursday and had it back up late in following week. Never a full moment in the Dragline business!

This is a very poor amature video of a monumental engineering event. The amature photographer had no experiance in photographing heavy equipment and fixated on a bunch of wheels without telling a story. Extremely missed opportunity of making an incredible video. Next time you pull out your camera dig deeper into the box and grab that new invention called a TRIPOD.

Nice video. Was this a new dragline, or after maintenance on an older one? It was difficult to tell, but the whole machine looked great. Having a good idea of how much weight was being lifted, and the means of lifting it, made this was a very interesting and enjoyable video to watch. Watching the Big Muskie boom being cut and dropped, with explosives, was very depressing. I like your user name. I traded for an H1, from a junk yard, back in the early 1980s. It had melted down the center piston. I fixed it, without having to replace the motor. It was so fast, I figured I had better get rid of it, before I killed myself on it. I had a wife and 2 little ones to think about, but it sure was a rush when it hit the power band. It would eat a CB 750 alive, and I had owned one of them, too. Thanks for the video.
