Transform your winter bike riding with studded tires! Review of the Schwalbe HS396 tire.
A long term review about using studded winter bicycle tires for commuting over many Canadian winters. I go over my experience with the Schwalbe HS 396. I look at the main features of the tire, on ice performance, durability and some wear issues i've come across.

it is sleepery with studded tires?
You wanted to say slippery. It's less slippery with studded winter tires on any winter surface than with regular slicks, semislicks, or even dirt tires. However it's still very slippery on black ice especially if it's wet, but if you manage to handle your bike gently without sharp fast moves its doable if you have studded tires.
Never buy steel studs, waste of money.
Thanks for video!
On the issue of studs poking through, might that be remedied by smoother stud bases? Or are they already quite smooth? Or even mushroom head shaped.
Thank you for sharing! that's was super helpful!
Haha, love it, this goes on my ebike now
Great vid - really appreciate the slow motion.
have you ever wished you could do wider tires than 30c ? I'm building a all year bike, but not sure if I need to go for a gravel frame to fit 35c or even 40c.
Greetings to Canada from Germany, thx for the video. Helped me to decide for the Marathon Winter Plus. Put the tire on a new DT-Swiss 545 rim and will run it in the next days, since they promissed snow again in the forecast. Rgds Dietrich
Thanks man! I’ve been trying to find out if ski goggles fit with a regular cycling helmet, and you answered, kudos!
The noise makes me think of walking over hordes of insects...
Omg cool:from Lego
Great informational video! What brake calipers do you have on the bike, that it can clear 30mm tires? They look like regular short reach brakes. Is the frame the limiting factor for anything wider, or is that the max for your brake calipers?
Fantastic shots, thanks for posting this.
Really helpful review thanks.
Have you tried riveting normal tires and adding urethane strips?
I've seen car tires with walnut grains in the rubber
Can you replace the studs?
My summer tires Schwalbe Hurricane Performance 28" Addix E-50 on ebike amazing performance on loose an compact snow, stunning side grip. now put Schwalbe Marathon Winter Plus Performance SmartGuard 28" Winter Reflex quite disappointing, price steep but performance slightly better on compact snow, on loose maybe worse, side grip definetely worst, the bigest impact on icy surface other then that probably waste of money in my opinion..
Yup. It’s surreal riding with them. Been using them for three winters. I use 4.5 inch Dillinger 5’s on my fatty at $450 a pair but saves my life and I can ride all year! No gym membership necessary! Thanks
I always thought about it if it would be a good solution for winter rides, I will try it 🤗
Can you elaborate on what you can do to mitigate the fogging? I don't have goggles, but wear glasses and whenever the temps drop below freezing, the fog up. From the research I've done so far, the best solution is to use heated goggles, but since those are super expensive I'd love to know if there are ways to eliminate the fogging (and protect your eyes from freezing temps) with just ski goggles. Thanks!
Thanks for making this helpful video and sharing your insights.
Hi Gremlin, I want to buy something similar, but I don't know the exact dimensions. Can you help me please?
thanks for the review
How is it in the wind?
I've just bought a pair of these as black ice is a regular problem on my commute. This is a very helpful video, thanks. Of course now the weather is forecast to stay warmer!!!
None are air tight on my nose bump cry😭
We all have different faces! Some models fit better than others on my face ;) You can also get some self-adhesive foam strips and bridge the gaps where needed. It's cheap and can help a lot, turning a mediocre fit into a great one!
Excellent video. I got 5 Ottawa winters out of my first Schwalbe HS 396 (front only) on my Batavus city bike. The studs wore smooth, so I replaced the tire. I've used the bike to hold me up when it was too slippery to walk.
Been there! Using a bike as a walker is pretty funny when you think about it!
I got a set this year. Absolutely love them. As other have noted, packed but moveable snow of even an inch will still make them squirrely. It’s kind of funny looking for bits of bare ice for traction.
Yeah, if the snow has been pre-packed, most tire with medium depth threads won't clear the snow as well as a more agressive threaded tire. But then, the rolling resistance would be even worse. I think these strike a good balance for varied conditions.
Best video ever at showing how these tyres work...or any tire in ice...
Wow, thanks Mike! I enjoyed doing it! Cheers!
Just added a similar version to my gravel bike. They are magic on mixed surfaces as long as there isn't much deep/loose snow. Very at-home on local dirt roads with a mix of hard pack snow, ice and dirt. Solid on local trails as long as the snow has been packed down. Safe (if slower) on pavement. They seem well-suited to a lot of winter riding in SW Ontario.
What size are you riding? If the snow is fresh and fluffy, they tear through it quite well in the 700 x 30!
@@grizzlymojo1495 it's on a gravel bike with 650 wheels, so they are 650 x 2" (~50 mm). Some of it may also come down to my novice snow bike handling skills!
It will tear apart... Winter ❄️ tire only in snowy road 🛣️
I wouldn't say so. In fact in city conditions you don't get just one type of road surface. In places like Finland, Canada, Russia etc with cold winters you get different types of road surfaces during the winter. These are dirty ice, black ice, hard packed snow, sludge, wet or dry asphalt. And you always ride from one type of surface to another multiple times during your ride. In such conditions winter tires wear out very slowly. I read a story from a Siberian guy, who rode 10k kilometres + on his Nokian Hakkapelita w240 and the studs were still present.
This is a brilliant video on winter tyres! Enjoyed watching it. :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
