N&W 1214 "Ol' Alexios": 2022 Season Highlights
I don’t think it’s a good idea to send it Back to Norfolk in Southern because do you know how many accidents Norfolk in Southern haves!
Yes this would be nice to see 1218 again but they won't let 611 run anywhere on the system so what chance does the 1218 have. If you look at all steam engine that they are rebuilding now they have to be converted from coal to oil and NS & CSX are scared to death to run any steam train on there lines. Two to Four Million Dollars is a lot of money just to run these trains on some branch line like N&W 611 has been doing up in PA. My area hasn't seen Steam since Southern 630 that ran for Cinn. to Danville KY. and now my line ( Cinn. to Portsmouth) has been dead since 2003 and the last 20 miles will be turn into a bike trail so NO hope out this way ever again. I hate to say this but us Old Farts just can't travel from state to state to ride these trains anymore so the money they would get from us is just not there. Thanks for the post.
4014: Running 1309: Running 3985: Being Rebuilt T1: Being Built!!!!! 1218: Next in line!!!!!!!
I wish 1214 was preserved and I wish that it doubleheaded with 1218.may you rest in peace 1214😔
Well, the issue is money…lots of it. NS is not doing well enough to even think about an undertaking on this scale with money and people in short supply. They definitely won’t allow 1218 to run on NS or any of the big six carriers. NS is the weakest of the big six financially with traffic dropping. In my opinion NS will be broken up between potential buyers, much like Conrail. Industrial production is dying in this country and NS is on borrowed time as a result.
Current management on NS is definitely driving the company into the dirt. When Mooreman ran things I do think NS was up there as one of the better Class 1s. I also think that the board of investors were probably railroaders as well. Right now it’s just Wall Street devils.
God you can really tell the desync on my end with my delayed response
I just realized I had used the wrong photo/it changed itself when i changed the filename for it at 21:47 Just ignore it, it originally was a photo of a B&O 2-6-6-4. Sorry for that mishap :)
Hopefully next time I won't be so late to the party.
If we can build a Pensey T1 from nothing but prints, 1218 and others is definitely possible. It just takes time and deep pockets.
Still can’t believe this hasn’t gotten more views. Tons of variety in it
I was born in 2002 in North Carolina and sadly never got to see her run😢
I want a Ps4 in 0 gauge! 😊❤
'The King Of Roanoke'
Good video! Thanks for the effort! A class is certainly one of the best articulated locos ever, and pretty handsome as well with it's clear lines.
I would love to see 1218 roll again, and I hope my Uncle David would let me know when he’s steaming again like he used to do from 1987-1991. I want him to chug back into Columbus Ohio, which is my home town.
The locomotive shown at 1:45 is a 3000 series, 4-4-4 Jubilee, not a 4-6-4 2800 series Hudson.
Sorry for the late response to this, but I did ultimately know that. However, it wasn't intended to show a Hudson from CP, more so as just background film while I talk about 2816's history. Thanks for pointing it out, though. I do appreciate it.
Too bad they never kept a 5900 series Selkirk locomotive 🚂 up and running, that would have been awesome 😎
she did some passenger runs between Toronto and London a few times when her sisters where in for service
I appreciate the info!
Great video! I just uploaded my own video yesterday from seeing the Empress #2816 yesterday during its stop at Saint Paul Union Depot in Minnesota She sure is a beautiful locomotive and it’s great to see her back on the high iron after 13 years!
My heart says yes. It needs to happen. Bring her back to life and let her roam free.
If there's the will on the part of the VMT to finish the rebuild the job, can be completed to current FRA standards. All it'll take is $$. PTC? Unless it's been recently the 611 lacks this feature.
Very appropriate to call #2816 "The Empress of Canada" since Canadian Pacific Ships, sister company of CPR, named their ocean liners "Empress".
Also, when CP Airlines existed, it's radio callsign was "Empress"
Yes, my first trip to England in 1970 was on The Empress of Canada.
Very cool video. I'm also making a documentary of the same name about 2816 Empress. Announced it over a year ago, and it will take another year to do. Thank you for doing my favorite engine. I hope you can continue making great videos.
Cool video & good background info. But the narration sounds like a text reading computer program.
It is, this is the last video that will have it, since I recently hired a Narrator
Do a video of n&w a class 1240 and y6b 2174
2174 has been on the mind for a while. Been working on 611's remake video but ill get to it!
Nice video presentation.
The footage is good. Do an actual non-robot voiceover, and this would be amazing!
Ive wanted to for a while now, but my limitations on equipment prevent that
Good Work. 👍🏼
5:30 looks like Roanoke yard?
I believe it is, yes. Towards the Eastern Side.
Nice Steam Tra😊
I would love to 1218 run again. The issue is not necessarily if it's possible, it absolutely is but moreso an issue if restoring her to operation makes sense and to that at this point in time it just doesn't. 611 is already a caged tiger at this point and being heavily underuttilized. 1218 if it were restored to operation at this point in time and circumstances didn't change would be in an even worse situation as there's even less places where it can run. It's times like this which really make me wish that we had an equivilient here in the US to the Great Central Railway in the UK, a preserved section of double tracked main line where it would be feasible to geather a bunch of main line engines and give them a place to run at track speed.
Thats a fair point. Guessing we will see what the future holds for mainline steam anyways, with 2816's tour coming up, it may open up a slew of possibilities, with it being the first real mainline steam run outside of UP's fleet.
This is actually pretty funny. Keep up the good work.
Hard to find a lot of film on the Z class, when they had the A's and Y's. Thx.
Old Maude climbed the rails without leading and trailing trucks. I think they added a leading truck to it.
If 1218 can run again there’s no reason why Reading 2101, TSRR 610, and steamtown 2317, and many others can’t go again. I mean they are building a new T1 so why not!
If a Western Maryland society wants to recreate a mountain type from the Western Maryland then why not just reclass it as a M-1a?
This is interesting as a lifelong steam fan and fan of 1218. I do have some comments though. NCTM does not to my knowledge have the space to restore an engine of 1218's size. Silvis would be the best place in my opinion due to the size of their shop but they have their hands full currently with 5511 and 3985. If it were to happen, it would be similar to 611's restoration in the fact it was funded through donations but likely without help from NS. As much as I would love to see the 1218 run in my lifetime, it will either fall into the traps that the 1309 crew fell into or not happen at least for the near and foreseeable future.
Magnificent, Thanks for posting 😊 Greetings from UK 🇬🇧
Big locomotives like the 1218 may take a few years, but it would definitely be worth it.
I think it would be very cool if they can get 1218 restored & running again, would LOVE to hear her whistle again
I have photos of 4501 in her green livery taken in Mt. Vernon, Illinois circa 1972. I'm not certain of the year but Southern railroad was doing publicity runs between St. Louis and Chicago as I recall. I was able to at get a ticket to ride between Centralia and Mt. Vernon.
Get together with TVRM!! They can help!!!!!
I love the idea that a museum within 4 hours of me would help do that. Question is, would their location be big enough to sustain the 121 foot long 1218?
In 1990 when 1218 was on her way to the convention in St. Louis she traveled trackage here in southern Illinois less than 15 miles from where I live, back then before the advent of the internet I didn't know steam locomotives still ran in the US.
The C&O Kanawha's were actually longer in overall length and heavier than the 2-8-8-2 bretheren, you'd think it would be the opposite.
B & M 3713 is currently being rebuilt at steamtowm in Scranton, PA. I see several others being given a second chance also.
I would love to see a FULL 4014 Style rebuild of not just 1218 but the sole surviving Y6a locomotive. But that is just me. What do you think?
It is possible, alot like 1218's is. Just have to find a place and time for it.
The MOT has no plans on restoring 2156, it would be a huge endeavor plus 2156 has a cracked frame.
@@stevew270 that is a good point.
@@stevew270 if the t1 trust could build a new t1 frame from SCRATCH so can they.
@@felonius_gru7312 It's possible of course but not likely, me and I'm sure most others would just like to see 1218 run again, don't really care about building a new one.
I like trains
Agreed.
who refers to a locomotive as a male, smh
I do? If ya dont like it, ya dont have to. Doesn't mean ya gotta complain about someones preferences.
When I grow up I want to work on 844 steam train, but that being said if the all mighty 1218 comes back I'm driving it no matter what people say and it does not well who cares I'm going to want to restore the best train of all time
I've seen the Norfolk And Western 1218 in footage. It's not that hard to restore to operate, but the website I looked on said there's no plans to restore it back to operation. They need to re operate it again, BeCause this locomotive needs to get back in business. They are making a huge mistake not restoring it, but at some point they are going to have to do it. I'll be surprised if I hear that this gets back on the tracks, BeCause as a huge railfan, I love this one. If Union Pacific 4014, 3985, (Will be restored) can be restored? So can this beautiful beast!
