People always poopoo cities, but I love living in cities. I lived in Tokyo as a boy and then later in Seoul as a teenager, and it was just a magical atmosphere. Rural areas and countryside areas are just boring compared to civilization, populace, and awe-inspiring structures everywhere you go!

Blade Runner 2049's vision of Los Angeles is a city that has lost its soul, lost in brutal, ecologically destructive neon and concrete futurism. This is Chongqing. It's magnificent, beautiful, terrifying, and soulless. The reason why cyberpunk-looking cities are that extra bit more impactful in China is because they exist within an authoritarian system, and authoritarianism is a key theme in a lot of cyberpunk literature.
