    I fully support switching to electric and away from diesel where applicable. However... Why doesn't the MBTA purchase new (or used) electric engines to operate on the Providence/Stoughton Line? If the overhead wires are already there, what is the MBTA waiting for? Buy one or two. Test them, then get them into regular service. Unless there is a magical half billion or multi-billion in financial resources ready to spend, trying to electrify one or more lines seems a little unrealistic. Likewise, where will all this electricity come from? Does electrification also include $$$ for new windmills, solar farms, or anything else that will make electricity? Amtrak seems like a reasonable buyer to purchase used locomotives from as they plan to put new locomotives into service within the next decade.

    Battery electric EMUs as designed by European train companies are made for small branch routes, which can't justify the infrastructure investment of proper electrification, not for longer commuter trains with 30 minute services, which are just looking for short term infrastructure savings.

    In 1922 The Netherlands decided to electrify the rail network. So, the US is running more than 100 years behind. The main reason is that in the US railroads are private while in Europe they are managed by governments. Anybody, saying private companies running infrastructure is more eficient, is just crazy.

    • @grommit700
      @grommit700 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Imagine 1) having the right to access a resource (such as water) from a local supplier that is located across a bridge, and 2) provide a resource for community benefit. But because the roads on the leadup and even the bridge itself is privately owned, these private owners say who can use the roads and bridges. This is pretty much how rail lines in USA are structed as where Amtrak (funded by the gov) does not have ownership rights. A little backwards compared to railways in Europe I hear. When American railroads as a whole declined around the middle of the 20th century, private ownership and acquisition by freight companies made things more difficult for passenger service (which was reduced as the automobile industry took off in the second half of the same century). This begins to explains why Amtrak struggles to provide on-time service where they do not own track, and why it's taking a long time for any passenger service company in USA to improve service where there is demand...

    • @grommit700
      @grommit700 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Now also imagine having a fraction of the budget (and income) some of the freight companies have. This is the constant variable Amtrak deals with year after year (minus the lack of track ownership). Whether Amtrak will become a private railroad one day, that's up to the U.S. Congress to decide considering they created it. Brightline is a new American railroad dedicated to passenger service in USA. So far they seem to be doing well. Yet I question their ultimate parent ownership (who are in the Middle East) Anyhow, if freight companies really wanted to, they could easily replace 50 and 100 year infrastructure nationwide in record time. A simple overpass is pennies in the grand scheme of things. For the time being, Amtrak's success is determined by tax-payer money and cooperation by those private owners. Plus American values too.

    Drawbridges should not be a problem. The New Haven Line and Shore Line have lots of drawbridges, and all but the Cos Cob bridge have continuous electrification. At Cos Cob, the trains coast across the gap in electrification. With the M8 cars, at least one set is powered at all times. Catenary towers last at least 100 years. About 20 years ago, the New Haven Line's catenary was converted to constant tension, with sets of pulleys, weights, and cables whose expansion in heat kept the power wires at a constant height. The Shore Line, and rest of the NEC from New Haven to Boston, was electrified in 2000 with new constant tension wires. Electrification isn't new technology. It's entirely doable.

    • @grommit700
      @grommit700 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Speaking of SLE... I'd like to see SLE and MBTA service expanded to Westerly. This would replicate the New Haven and Hartford main lines where two passenger railroads provide economical and premium services for passengers. However, for this to happen some major track work needs to be done in the form of making double track station triple. This way both the economical and premium trains operate without bottlenecks. Some of the stations in CT appear to have the space to expand. But it will come down to whether local property owners are okay with giving up some of their land for the railroad.

    • @peter7936
      @peter7936 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@grommit700 A lot of stations have room, so no need for takings. But the stations are generally new, and cost millions of dollars. This problem was foreseen when SLE went bidirectional, with platforms on both sides of the tracks. Yes, service to Westerly would be good, but more critical is service during commuting hours. There is a huge gap between 5:30 PM and 8:30 pm for evening trains out of New Haven. That's a very long wait for typical commuters who cannot make the 5:30 train, which is a lot since most are coming from Fairfield County. I the CTDoT folks think SLE is for New Haven commuters, not Fairfield County, and that everyone has the hours of state employees, and can leave work at 4:30 pm. My town's parking lot was full pre-pandemic, now it's mostly empty after service cuts.

    • @grommit700
      @grommit700 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@peter7936 Yeah it's amazing how in one part of the state service is frequent. Whereas in the opposite, it's much less. Now I understand why the state wanted to reduce SLE service. Bristol and Manchester CT have good size populations on both ends and along the way on both the roads and rails. I could see a new service being implanted here one day. Eastern Connecticut to the RI border seems more tourism and local user oriented. Maybe if Westerly's and New London's economy expanded, I could see both states working together quickly to provide passenger service. Perhaps there is a case to create seasonal service for the warm weather season? I've used CT Rail quite a bit. It's nice because on either ends there are moderate sized cities, and a mix of everything in between for people to use the train for.

    • @peter7936
      @peter7936 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@grommit700 There's no passenger service to Bristol or Manchester. Are you suggesting a new line? The thing with SLE is there are a lot of folks who live out here and commute to Fairfield County or even the city. Train service is a good commuting option for those long commutes if it is frequent enough. I would also help if CDoT enforced paying for parking at Metro North stations like West Haven and Blackrock.

    • @grommit700
      @grommit700 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I am suggesting service between B and M. Because 84 in both directions is unpleasant no matter the time of year wet or dry. The XL Center and CCSU are two examples of reasons people would take the train. I used SLE before. It's faster which tops MNRR on the NH Line. Yet I sensed the general demand is why it's struggling ever since the pandemic and remote work. I hope demand goes back up.
