    I think your advice about the need to clean the old sink drain because a gasket will be installed there deserves mention also in the context of the plastic ring below each valve handle. The plastic rings are gaskets, so the countertop surface under the plastic rings needs to be clean (and flat). For example, mineral deposits might need to be removed. The bottom of each of the metal valve collars that will sit on the plastic rings also needs to be clean (and flat). Although the collars probably already are since they're new, they should be inspected to confirm. (In general, everything should be inspected prior to installation.) The gaskets should be inspected for defects too. I didn't watch the previous installation video, so I don't know whether you mentioned this there.

    • @upgradeyourhomediy
      @upgradeyourhomediy 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      In the full removal and replacement video I do talk about the need to clean the counters and inside of the sink, but I didn't notice the silicone on the underside of the sink until I tested and had water pour everywhere :).

    I infer some of the instructions are overly terse. Also, the aerator should probably not be pre-installed by the factory, because a disassembly step is counter-intuitive. Wouldn't it be great if instructions include a warning list of the most common mistakes?

    • @upgradeyourhomediy
      @upgradeyourhomediy 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It would be great if the instructions warned you about the most common errors. As for the aerator, I think it might get lost if not installed at the factory, but if they said to remove it before installation then you would know where it is and that you had to put it back on.

    Great to see your mistakes. That is the best way to learn. I recently changed the ice maker of the freezer.. the first ices were black (due to the carbon of the new filter). I should have running the water first (to clean the pipes) before installing the new filter and in the middle of the process ( to clean the new filter first), something not mentioned in the instructions 😢. Thanks for sharing. Saludos from Mexico 🇲🇽.

    You can buy EPDM O-Rings to replace warn out ones. I get some silicone based lubricant and soak the O-ring in that for a bit, then use an oring removal tool and remove the old o-ring and replace it with a freshly lubricated new one. It works great for me.

    Unfortunately even if you do everything correctly these things are going to fail/leak at some point because the O-ring rubber is going to break down. I certainly would not close any connections in a wall where you have to tear stuff out to fix the leak 😒 For this reason I would steer people away from using them.

  • @mnoble0902
    @mnoble0902 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Very helpful! Thank you. I just want to make sure I understand fully. When installing a smart switch (which I plan on doing this weekend), red wires should be connected with black wires, white wires should be connected together, and the grounds should be connected together. My switch is a single pole, so I can skip the yellow wire. Is this correct?

    • @upgradeyourhomediy
      @upgradeyourhomediy หลายเดือนก่อน

      Without knowing the switch and the current wiring setup I can't answer whether that is correct as every situation can be different. The instructions with the smart switch will tell you which wire to connect to the load wire coming from the panel and which to connect to the wire going to the device/light.

  • @Cableman-hr2uu
    @Cableman-hr2uu หลายเดือนก่อน

    one major problem of sharkbite connection is the pipe can turn after pushed into the connector, if the other end is a quarter turn stop valve, then you may be turning the pipe instead of the stop valve.

    • @upgradeyourhomediy
      @upgradeyourhomediy หลายเดือนก่อน

      When I turn off a stop valve I always hold the valve with one hand and turn the valve handle with the other. It is pretty easy to tell if the handle is pointing to the supply line or 90 degrees from it.

    I’ve watched a few of your videos now and I would like to say I’m enjoying them! I have heard you say multiple times in different videos about needing GFCI outlets which is borderline true. I’m in the US and GFCI protection is required on certain circuits but that protection can be a GFCI breaker at your panel or a GFCI outlet as you show. If it’s at the panel then the whole circuit is protected and purchasing a GFCI outlet is redundant and if anything may cause problems on a circuit that has a GFCI breaker as well. Just my two cents when stating people NEED to purchase GFCI outlets.

    • @upgradeyourhomediy
      @upgradeyourhomediy หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching my videos and I am glad you are finding them helpful. You are correct that a GFCI breaker will protect all the outlets on that circuit. For most beginner DIYers replacing an outlet is an easier way to get the protection than replacing a breaker. Working in the breaker panel is a more advanced level of DIY electrical skill.

    Proper plumber's cloth is a wildly unhelpful bit of info, WHAT GRIT???? For Buna N O'Rings you should go as fine as you have patience for. A polished mirror surface is not too fine. no one will do it but it's a great surface against which to seal. I use a woodworking hand plane (small block plane) to put the chamfer on the end. If I were doing a whole house or as a vocation, I'd buy the specialty tool. Depth of fit ? I just measure the inside of the fitting.

    I’m so frustrated. I have a slump block house that was built in 1967. At some point, the owners added drywall and insulation over top of the slump block. The original outlets and switches were sunk into the drywall when the home was built, so they are set back about 2.5”. I’ve been slowly replacing outlets and switches, and adding extension rings to the boxes. All of the switches and outlets had flat head screws, that use a flat head screw driver. These are a pain in the butt to screw and unscrew as the slot where you put the screw driver is very shallow. So I wanted to replace all the screws while I was at it with phillips flat head machine screws. But I’ve run into a problem. 6-32 screws are way too big, and it seems that also 4-33 screws are also too big to go into the outlet boxes. The outlet boxes are of course older 2x3 boxes, and apparently they use an entirely different screw size. I cannot find a screw that fits that is at least 2 1/4” long and I’m losing my mind. Any thoughts?

    I'm a big fan of Shrkbite. Never had one leak, and I have them everywhere. Use only VERY FINE GRADE sandpaper

    keep in mind that most 15a breakers will not actually trip until 17a or so. they are variable and not exact.

    #16 extension cord should not be manufactured for 15A circuits.

    Thanks! I had a slow drip after a shut off Valve, I had to saw the pipe and didn’t make a 90° cut, got a pipe cutter and the Debur tool and viola! No more leak
