Ferries In Focus
Belgium
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 18 ก.ค. 2020
For my channel I will primarily focus on making videos about ferries in western Europe. There will mainly be videos about ferry crossings during stormy weather, something I really enjoy. However, the amount of these videos will depend on how many storms we get and if I can travel or not. it is very much a niche thing but someone has to fill the gap :-D .
After having used my Fujifilm XT-2 / XT-4 for filming, I have now switched to a GoPro Hero 11 for filming. It is much more practical and discrete and most of all... they can take a beating. I already to kill my GoPro Media Mod on its' first trip during a storm.. it couldn't stand up to the spray , rain and wind...
I hope you enjoy my content. Please feel free to leave a (constructive) comment on how I have can further improve my videos etc.

Ferry Crossing - King Seaways - IJmuiden to Newcastle
With DFDS offering a 50% saving on their minicruises , it was the perfect time for a trip over to Newcastle on the 1987 built King Seaways. The vessel is still in perfect condition despite her 37 years at sea. The weather for this trip was a strong northwesterly wind, Force 7-9 with a moderate to rough sea state. We left a bit late from IJmuiden due to the weather but arrived on time in Newcastle. I can highly recommend this mini cruise, especially when it's on offer.. the crew and food are amazing and both vessels were only recently refurbished with new cabins.

On 09/04/2024 storm Pierrick made for a pretty windy day on the Dover Strait so the perfect time for a trip to Dover. And a good day to test the seakeeping of P&O's new double ended Fusion Class ferries. Please note this video only contains footage from part of the Calais to Dover crossing. Halfway to Dover they decided to close all outside decks so there was no way for me to get any more good ...
Storm Crossing - Stena Vision - Cherbourg to Rosslare

On 09/11/2023 I took a trip on the Stena Vision from Cherbourg to Rosslare as they were forecasting quite lively weather. After the sailing was first cancelled, they decided to sail anyway but with a delay to avoid the worst of the weather. I would like to thank the crew of the Stena Vision for the excellent crossing and getting us safely to Rosslare and back. The Stena Vision is really one of ...

*Use headphones for best experience One week after Ciara, storm Dennis arrived on British shores. All was lining up for it to be a very rough crossing. However, a secondary area of low pressure formed just west of the English Channel basically dropping the wind speed from Force 10 to 1... The first 4/5 hours of the crossing were therefor uneventful as there was barely any wind. Luckily, once in...

Ugly ships. And low cost crew.
Not that rough but not calm. Good to see how the Pioneer handled the crossing as this was yhe first large double ended ship, especially designed for the channel crossing. Do you know whether it was on battery power or diesel ? The Spirit of Britain that this ship replaced, is now the Oscar Wilde with Irish Ferries.
My kind of crossing, rougher the better, bit boring just showing the sea, could have shown the inside of the ship.

yes its hard for dfds to get out of that harbour on its own i have been on that route many times as a truck driver and it do get very rough at times with pressure of waves comming down from the north i have seen it where you cannot even walk round the ferry /-plus then you get the stupid passengers getting drunk in duty free booze so booze and rough seas dont mix i go on it all year round as it gives me a 16hr break and im fresh to drive again on my way to norway saves driving all the way via dover
Chunnel is so much safer now
I am impressed by the stability of the ship. I always wondered about the seaworthiness of such an unusual design but it looked very good. A few times you could see it pitching but there was very little rolling. 👍
The ship was previously the Val de Loire, sailing Channel routes for Brittany Ferries. I have sailed aboard he many times and found her to be a very sea-kindly vessel; several crossings were in gale/storm force winds. She is much missed by Brittany Ferries customers. Wish she was still operating to Spain and France. Bon voyage, Val.
I spent many happy childhood holidays onboard the Val de Loire, she was a fantastic vessel in the 90s and it's great to see her still carving up the waves.
Done numerous crossing on DfDS , they are not bad but sometimes you get groups on board who can be very boisterous in the cabin areas. Been across the North Sea a number of times during my stint in the MN on tankers. The North Sea has every so often rogue waves which can be very discerning.
The North Sea has some of the largest Rogue Waves known. Crossed it as a child several times - luckily not too horrendously rough, but I did take a sea sick tablet!

I have always loved the North Sea from when I was a little boy when my Mum and Dad would take me to the seaside in the UK to Lincolnshire and Norfolk. I would always wonder where all the ships were going on the horizon and found it facinating !!! Always RESPECT the sea. I've always thought of it like a living 'being' and yet we abuse it and pollute it and it's animals. You won't beat it so go along with it.
Quite similar to a few weeks ago coming back to Newcastle, quite rough and I was seasick
I know it feels horrible doesn't it ? I have worked on the North Sea and rest assured even the most experienced mariners and Captains get sea sick now and again and it doesn't have to be particularly rough or bad weather. It's just how the sea 'catches' you.sometimes ~Respect the Sea~.....All the best 😊😝
heres a tip for sea sickness use a sea band on your wrist and carry ginger biscuits or crystalized ginger and take with water then lay down on your bed just looking at the roof it works for my wife and she never gets sea sick since
@@Ncfc-ek8il This is so true. People can be ok with severe storms, yet a gentle swell can make them green. Bigwavemaster {an ERRV vessel worker for many years} said lots of the extremely experienced crew became seasick , especially after time ashore. I've heard that often it's those who boast that they are ''never sick!'' who can ruin a fishing trip.
@@BIGV710 I tried sea bands {both are to be worn together} and they didn't work for me. Transderm Scōp doctor's prescription} is very effective, but needs to be taken hours before travelling.
I remember going on a rough trip to Ireland a few years back. That was on the Isle of Inishmore shown at the beginning of the video.
Those lorries should not have been placed on the open deck.
@@sterling147 indeed.. can’t imagine they were very happy with the state of their lorry afterwards 😅
@@ferriesinfocus They will have been carrying 'dangerous' cargo, otherwise they would have been inside.
I'm fairly sure some cargos have to be outside of the ship or they don't travel that's why a lot of RoRo freight ships are much more open
I think you had a good night sleep. 🤗🤭 When we took the ferry last year end may, the sea was flat calm
It was fine :) . It was a bit rougher around midnight so that did wake me up for a few minutes
Heb de overtocht als heel leuk ervaren, goede catering en schone hutten. Start van een mooie tocht door scotland. De moeite waard .
Crossed the North sea 4 times Newcastle to Bergen in winter all in gale force winds two of the crossings force 9. When the crew board up the passenger windows to the lounge and string ropes so you cannot go forward nor aft, then you hear the propellers vibrating!!! You know you are in a storm. It was reduced speed and a two hour late arrival. An experience while i slept.
Must have been some trip 😂
The Northsea. Not for nothing the most dangerous sea of the world. Maters and chief officers are scarry for these sea.
There used to be a chap ''Bigwavemaster'' who had his North Sea Videos on you tube.. {an ERRV ship, out on the North Sea 24/7} - some phenomenal storms him and his crew-mates were on.
Amazing that the English Channel is supposed to be one of the busiest sea ways in the world and yet there were no other ships to be seen !
It can be surprisingly calm sometimes :)
Super crossing 🌊😉👍
It's IJmuiden not Ijmuiden. The I and J should both be capitalized
Great video. 👍Do you know whether it is usual to have tug assistance when departing from Ijmuiden or was this due to the high wind?
@@ThamesShips I think so as the passage out of the harbor is very narrow :).
@@ferriesinfocus Thanks.
No, only when there is a strong wind. They do use a pilot often, if the captain is not authorized to sail out of this harbour.
@@greensteezy Thanks for the info. 👍
THIS looks like the proper funny crossing to be on! - there yer can se, feel and really get the feeling yer are sailing LOOLs
It wasn't as rough as they said it would be (sadly) 😂
@@ferriesinfocus A Scottish woman you tuber did this exact crossing- she was seasick, and the sounds of others vomiting could be heard through her cabin walls...It made me feel ill just listening! 🤢 I love the fact you haven't put music over this- just the sound of the waves and the sea.
When was this offer?
They had one in spring and again this summer. Just keep an eye on the website of DFDS, they have these promotions once in a while
Thanks for this great video. What a huge forces there will be on the bow doors of this old ferry.
It's perfectly safe :) , these ferries are well maintained
Dont worry she can handle it, she has been sailing on Kristiansand - newcastle and THAT could be a ruff ride! And furthermore shes a Danish lady, and they are proper build!
@@Thedane2023 indeed... I never had the pleasure of travelling from Newcastle to Norway but I've seen some videos/pictures of rough crossings. She was really tested on those crossings.

J'ai travaille sur ce ferry (ex val de Loire) Portsmouth -Santander avec de sacres tempêtes en hiver
Whoa is it common to be this rough?
Not really, only happens a couple of times a year :)
@@ferriesinfocuscall that rough quite calm really. Rough is when water comes over the Admiralty breakwater at Dover. The new ships are designed specifically for the Channel and can take most storms. It is the ports closing that is the main delays, Dover closes if it hits force 9.
@@alanchandler254 Depends on the direction of the wind. It's the south westerlies that cause problems in Dover. Anything from the northern half of the compass is sheltered by the cliffs.
I was on Stena Spirit to Sweden from Poland
Sorry, watched about 3min of your video and couldn't bare that infernal music throughout the video. Wind howling and water splashing against rhe glass would have added to the spectacle. Not sure why people insist on playing repetitive music over the top of videos. It's horrible.
At 39k tonnes a big enough ship to handle the sea. That said she was built in 1987 so probably not as good as some of the more modern ferries..mind you i did that crossing in a force 12 on the old Irish Continental Lines' St Killian in about 1979. Think she was about 8k tonnes..talk about a cork in a storm!!!
As a child I had a really rough family crossing on Falaise {3,710 tonnes built 1946 and scrapped 1970's..she really rolled and the decks were closed. I felt dizzy as everyone smoked in the saloon -wasn't sick, but was very very glad to get off.
Why would they head out in the first place, knowing the weather conditions and forecast and that there are ships already waiting in Dover?
Oooof. I think I had waves of abot 3-4 metres and 6 to 7 Beaufort on Normandie last summer, and it didn't seem so violent (but at night I couldn't see much).
The Normandie is a great ferry, it will be a sad day when she leaves the fleet. Wind can do a lot to whip up the waves, I noticed it on this trip as well. As soon as the wind dropped most of the breaking waves went away and those always give the biggest splashes 😅
Brilliant video.. one of the best ferry videos on here.. well done.. can't understand why so few views.. there are rubbish videos with thousands of likes..
I can say it takes a certain kind of passion (and level of craziness 🤣) to make this kind of videos. Just driving to and from Cherbourg takes about 12 hours, never mind staying out on deck for hours being drenched by sea spray and rain 😂. Every video is a process but you learn from it what you can and take it with you for the next project (GoPro Media kits don't like sea spray for instance 🤣). It can be somewhat disappointing sometimes not to get more views but reading a comment like yours made my day and I want thank you for that 🙂.
@@ferriesinfocus It's a lovely video- I often search for rough ferry videos {my nemesis!} as I love watching them from a steady place when home- Luckily the algorithm showed me this one!.
@@Oakleaf700 Thank you, it is getting difficult to make these as more often than not, they don't sail in this weather anymore :)
It was a rough crossing from Portsmouth to Caen. Did any of the passengers suffer from sea sickness?
Not that I know of :)
Is Caen beautiful? I have only ever crossed from Dover to Calais. Portsmouth to Caen is a much wider crossing.
@@filmsforallnations Caen is a nice place, lots of history :)
Don’t want to hear music, want to hear sea and weather
You're lucky that you didnt get "Yooooo hoooooo, thieves and beggars" yet again. Dover to Calais has felt rough af at tines. Just imagine what the ships in those North Sea videos feel like. 😱😱
Did he say that the pool remains open?! Even Cunard struggles to do that!😂
So do you feel the sea much at that level of weather?
As long as she goes into the waves it's not that bad. It also depends on where you are on the ship as the bow is obviously pitching more. But the movement did increase a lot once she turned north and the seas were coming from the side. She was rolling quite a bit and we weren't allowed outside for a while
Beautiful video !
Thank you :)
I was on stena horizon and it was like this
That must have been interesting. The Horizon is quite a bit smaller than the Vision.
@@ferriesinfocusThe horizon is longer, and vision is a bit taller
