This is greatly helpful for prospective international students like me
I wish they would just say this was a safety issue rather than trying to make it sound like ecological restoration. I can't think of any good ecological reason for removing dead trees. They provide excellent cavity nesting habitat, help shield more intact forest from edge effects, and help block views of the causeway (and noise) from trails. As for the safety reason, I feel this wasn't adequately explained. Most of the hemlocks had sound wood. I imagine it would take years for pathogens to break it down, during which time the standing trees would provide the above benefits. Danger trees are constantly monitored and dealt with in stanley park. Why then did thousands of recently killed trees have to be removed all at once rather than dealing with them as they became a danger?
Hey Mark! It's a elementary school classmate, I know someone who could use some encouragement in this program, year 1 going to 2. Any advice beyond this video?
Which Exams are required to get into it for international student.

Great stuff...I could just see myself in a lecture hall at UBC in the 1970s. Having said all this. Let me add, that this detail is actually not new, but perhaps better understood would be better what to characterize. Most of the things mentioned here were taught in Botany 101, Dendrology and Silvics back in the day....while I have been away from this for many decades...it is nice to get a refresher. Where the rubber hits the road is human demand for forest products and how to acquire those products from the forest and maintain as healthy an ecosystem as possible. Mention of dispersed retention is appropriate in some situations, but certainly not all and due to physical constraints and basic economics is not possible in many others...this should be stressed. Further, the more retention quite possible the more area that will be harvested unless we reduce allowable harvest limits...which has major consequences for a community level of milling, forest investment into milling, employment, the multiplier effect of having a healthy viable forest operation over a certain area. These are the challenges of a professional forester who actually manages forest for economic, social benefit as well as the environment. Sure folks today like to talk about ecosystem services...we can accommodate these by ensuring a large park, and recreation corridors, recognizing the extent and roll of defacto forests which are those we will never consider for timber harvesting for instance. In my view, I do wish folks would limit their use of "resilient" "diverse" and more as they tend to be overused and because these words are nothing without full consideration to context to any specific forest ecosystem, biogeoclimatic zone and subzone.
would theme, amazing
How to join this program. Thanks

It doesn’t matter how much anyone, including Native Americans, desire the profits of BC forests. Strict limits less than 0.1% of forests logged are required to ‘maintain’ the forests at current population. Again, Strict limits, Irregardless of ‘market demand’, government reconciliation or profit motives.
That includes additional limits in years of fire loss.
Outstanding presentation. It is truly amazing the impact that soil microbes can have on our existence. There is so much to learn here.
Perhaps we should have a right to roam established on the private forestry lands covering Vancouver island. This would create far more opportunities for recreation outside of the parks.
Hallo, is there any master program of forest biometrics? I am interested on it. Thank You
i need training on forest management and conservation and silivicultural practices
Thanks so kindly for such an opportunities. I wished to express my interest in applying for a scholarship with in the Noble Institution.
💚 I´m so excited about these changes, and I hope that we can see in BC a holistic vision of forests, as well as Indigenous sovereignty in regard to their rights and decision-making.
The climate change is being caused by blocking the fires . The smoke from fires keeps the earth cool
In Florida for example by suppressing fire we are making the Pine forests go extinct and kill off all the natural animals . It ends up being a totally oak and vine dominated trash forests that you can’t walk through and no animals can live in
Honestly we would be better off if we always tried to burn everything that will burn .
Florida and most of the southeast usa has burned every year for millions of years and we now ruined the forests by stopping them all
This message should be the only thing we do across North America.
If we put out fires we only make them worse the next time
"Forestry floods my family"

After 8 months, as promised, my FOI's into commercial and corporate bias by UBC researchers have finally returned in the context of our provincial parks. My initial assertions pertaining to academic corporate bias at UBC have been confirmed. There is not a word or peep about the environmental, carbon and wildlife impacts of resorts, corporations and commercial operations within our parks in all the thousands of pages of documents. No wonder UBC wouldn't answer my questions or phone calls for almost a year. The ivory tower of UBC has been exposed for its human failings, for when it comes to UBC Research and Researchers, the old adage "It Is Difficult to Get a Man to Understand Something When His Salary Depends Upon His Not Understanding It" appears to be both valid and appropriate. Our Provincial Parks have paid an environmental price for this self-serving, ethically questionable and biased set of actions by UBC Forestry. And after 10 months of silence, I continue to expect no dialogue, no transparency, and no honesty from UBC, as my investigation has revealed a level of institutional entitlement here that is both disturbing, pathological, without apology and without accountability or transparency to the taxpayer.
