      Card machines are readily available in most towns. Most places accept card payments but there are still quite a few businesses that only take cash, so it's best to have cash with you as well. Some guest houses don't take cards so it's best to check ahead.

    • @alasdairmackenzie905
      @alasdairmackenzie905 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lewis. I think that you'll find that those of us who know where they are tend to keep it to ourselves in order to keep the number of people at these spots to a minimum. It's too many sightseers congregating who chase them away by making themselves visible in full sight of the animals and making noise, and so spoil it for those of us who genuinely want to study or photograph them. That said, there are plenty of "hot spots" around the island so just get yourself snuggled down at the side of one of the sea lochs and be prepared to wait for hours.

    Miserable as Dundee . Just do what you want . Scotland has become much more of a tourist destination in recent years and for the most part people are very happy about this and appreciate people coming to Scotland . unfortunately there are a small percentage of people mostly in Edinburgh that complain about the amount of tourism . It is true we are not really set up for large amounts of tourists but it's not so important . I sense a little grumpiness with this guy trying to tell people what they should and shouldn't do . Scotland is a free country for everyone to enjoy . Tourists are especially welcome as Scottish people like it and like the many compliments they receive from tourists . Tip or not is up to you , drive slow if you want to see something , hire cars and feel free to do anything this guy said not too because most Scottish people don't care as long as you are enjoying yourself then you are doing no harm.

    • @gr-s5775

      Scotland No- don’t ‘drive the speed limit’ the speed limit is the maximum permitted by law, not the suggested speed. It’s ridiculous to advise people to drive to the maximum allowed. On an A road for example you might want to travel at 50mph and that’s fine- it all depends on the conditions and so on. If other road users want to overtake then they are able to do that as well as long as they don’t break the speed limits. I love fast cars. I love driving fast, but I keep to the track.

    I would say if you're self-catering, before you go up the highlands, buy all your food, in Central Scotland. Many Scots use Lidl or Aldi and you can save a fortune, on your food expenses. Many places in the highlands are expensive as far as Scottish locals are concerned. Buying from these budget stores will save you £££'s.

  • @gr-s5775

    The advice is good, however tipping is not obligatory. Normally in pubs when buying drinks you tip only for exceptional service. In restaurants tip perhaps 10% but please remember it’s not obligatory- servers have to be paid at least minimum wage. IMHO tipping when the service is bad is not helpful. With reference to currency, the reviewer is right about Scottish notes not being legal tender in England but most people will take them and all banks will. As for ‘Irish’ currency, I think he means Northern Irish currency as the Republic has Euros. Credit cards are widely accepted, except American Express which isn’t always taken.

I would suggest getting a guide book for a specific walk you are interested in if its the long distance routes like the West Highland Way or Southern Upland Way, We have bothies in the mountains you can stay in free of charge and you can find a guide book for these as well.

    Hi thanks for the helpful video. Me and my wife were planning to visit in July. Is it too much tourist traffic. Secondly could you suggest good & honest car rental company as we are planning to drive around. Need a piece of advise. What do you reckon the number of days we should have in mind if we were driving around and wanting to see Scotland . Thanks,.

    • @RogerJackaman
      @RogerJackaman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      July is an extremely busy time but that should not put you off if you avoid some of the hot-spots like Skye and the big cities. You will find all the big name car rental companies here but as I never use them I couldn't recommend one over the others. I would say though that if your not confident driving on the left and your not sure of where you are going another option is to book a small bus tour. This takes the stress out of driving and the guides will show you places that you will not find in guide books. The number of days needed to see Scotland is endless, there is so much to see and do you would need a life time but if you plan on heading as far North as you can then give yourself at least 5 or 6 days. You can drive straight from one end of the country to the other in a day but you need to slow down and spend some time to appreciate it so a few days getting up and back and a couple of days in an area of your choosing perhaps. Also don't forget the Scottish borders, everyone is drawn to the highlands but the border area in the south is beautiful and has a lot to offer visitors and of course is a lot less busy.

    Any tips if I am travelling as a lone female? And what are some tour companies names I could research? Also when do the seasons just begin and just end (to avoid the bulk of tourists). Thanks!

    • @RogerJackaman
      @RogerJackaman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usual precautions when travelling alone are advisable in the main cities. Watch for pick pockets at busy tourist spots and never accept unsolicited help frpm anyone you don't know. For tour companies take a look at Rabbies based in Edinburgh. They do one day tours as well as longer tours all over Scotland. The guides are friendly and well informed, you can check them out on Tripadviser where they are one of the highest rated companies. They use smaller buses so can go places the larger coaches can't reach. The season starts fully in June and ends around September. I always say October is a good time to visit, its much quieter but everywhere is still open and the colours of the landscape are spectacular. The weather is colder but can be quite dry and its a great time of year for vividly coloured sunsets.

    • @RogerJackaman
      @RogerJackaman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      When ordering at a bar in a pub it is customary to leave a tip on the table or ask if they have a tip jar on the bar.

    • @gr-s5775
      @gr-s5775 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roger Jackaman hate to disagree- tipping in the U.K. is totally discretionary, unlike in the USA where it’s almost obligatory now. Tipping for a pub meal is not expected- but if you have had good service then why not? In the USA service staff are paid only a notional, nominal amount (as low as $1.14 an hour I think in some states) and the IRS assumes they are being tipped, ergo, it the expectation, it’s almost part of the expected transaction. I’ve tipped 10% in the USA for bad service and then been harangued for it! Anyway, back to the U.K. As for tipping- Taxi drivers- generally round it up to the nearest convenient amount unless they don’t move to help you with bags etc. restaurants- 10-12.5% is normal but less is ok- as I said it relates to the quality of the service and also to the tipping policy of the place. I ask to know if there is a pool tipping process in play. I want my tip to go to the person I tip. In pubs, as I said, tipping is not normal for drinks and is generally not normal for bar food- unless the service is exceptional. For guides and so on, well it seems to me that you have paid for a service. You are not obliged to tip- but if you are particularly happy with the service then a small amount is fine. Personally I find the whole tipping thing very patronizing- I mean you wouldn’t tip your dentist or your surgeon would you?

    • @mrade5321
      @mrade5321 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never heard anything in my life in Scotland regarding percentages for tips. It doesn't work like that as far as I'm concerned. The only situations I've been in where I've felt that a tip would be the thing to do is, 1. Getting a takeaway meal delivered. Depending on where you order from, delivery charge could be from £1.20 to £2.50 (roughly) around where I live. In that case, I always make sure I give a £2 tip to the delivery driver. Even if I pay online, I still physically hand the delivery driver the tip, as that way I know they get it and don't have to declare it to anyone. Every little helps. And 2. If I'm in a pub or whatever and want to tip whoever serves me, I'll order a drink or drinks and tell the bar staff to take one for themselves. They might not even drink themselves, but they are free to take the value of a drink at their discretion and what they do with that is up to them. As long as the tip is going to them, then I'm happy and hopefully they are too.

    Nice job on this video. Do you know if it is necessary to have an international drivers license when in Scotland if visiting from outside the country? Thanks

      I believe as long as you have held your licence for more than 12 months and its written in English there should not be an issue. Even with an international license you need to have your original license as well. I do now that if you are resident in the UK you can use your own countries license for up to one year.

    Scottish Roads....where people thiink they have the right to fly around scottish back roads like rally drivers and will force their way though a gap thats just barely big enough for a bicycle...and van drivers, dont even get me started on them. Im surprised you didnt mention the midges in Scotland...thats another story of its own..

    Thanks! What about using credit cards - do most restaurants and stores take VISA MC and DISCOVER or should we plan to have cash?

    • @RogerJackaman
      @RogerJackaman 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, just about all businesses accept credit cards. However some small guest houses and BnBs still only accept cash, although these are very few in number.

      Not many places accept American Express here, I’m not sure why... But that’s perhaps an issue for some tourists.
