That's What We Call The Good Life
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 2 มิ.ย. 2018
We have created this UK gardening TH-cam channel to share what we do to live what we call the good life.
We are passionate about growing your own food. We have an allotment as well as a back garden. We keep chickens as well as grow a variety of vegetables and enjoy enjoy eating seasonal fruit and vegetables.
We will be sharing some of our favourite recipes on here. We like to demonstrate that eating well doesn't have to be complicated, difficult expensive. We enjoy eating a variety of good food and treats. We believe that if more people did this then we could together reduce food waste and plastics.
Please join us and subscribe to our channel. You can help us if you suggest new video topics and share our videos. If we can all live a little more sustainably and encourage a few others to do the same, together we will make a difference.

How Do I Get An Allotment? - Allotment Gardening UK
We get asked 'How do I get an allotment?' on our allotment gardening UK channel so we put together these tips for getting and allotment. We know how to apply for an allotment plot because we have done so and helped others apply for their first allotment plot.
To get started with an allotment in the UK we first have to be offered a vacant allotment plot. We normally have to join a waiting list and get a call when an allotment becomes available to rent. We rent a whole allotment plot but you can often have a half plot to get started.

We grow our own food all year round on our UK allotment and home vegetable garden. We help with TH-cam videos to show you what to sow and what to plant each month plus lots of updates so that you can see what we are doing. If you follow us and subscribe then you will see how we are growing our own food each month to give you ideas on what you should be sowing and growing both this year and next.

Simple Guide To Slug Control - Allotment Gardening For Beginners UK
Hi, can I ask when do you plant them. Do you start them inside or straight outside. Thank you so much.
I waited two months for a plot but that is because I wanted one that was being given up as it had infrastructure on it and well manured soil by the current owner. I have a 9 perch plot now which I took over almost two weeks ago..I am up every day ATM. I pay £42.50 for the year
Thanks for the very useful and interesting video! This might be a silly question but why do you have the sticks with bottle on in your beds? I've seen a lof of people in my allotments doing the same thing and always wondered why 😊
Some are to mark rows when first planted so I know where I’ve sown and I put bottles on the top as it’s easy to catch yourself without and some I did have covered in netting and the bottles help hold the net otherwise the canes go through the netting 😊
We have just got an allotment we have 8 rod ours is run by the council we only waited for 2 weeks it cost £80 this includes a shed they only allow local people to have one we have a few in our town. We have a manager who we contact if we have issues. I put myself on the waiting list and a lady from the council contacted me and told me the managers number. We have water in site and we can hire certain machinery
How far is your new abode to your allotment?
Thankyou for the video, I totally agree about leaving crops in the ground until we need them, feed the soil as well as us😊
Thank you for watching
Thank you, your video really helped make it clear. As you say there are so many conflicting opinions on social media and that’s not at all helpful.
Glad it’s helped and it’s certainly kept blight away from my tomatoes 🍅 for many years and like most people I’ve learnt this through experience and losing them in the past
Did they survive ok? Is there anything specific needed for the ‘Basket of Chillies’ variety? And can you save yellow unripe chillies? X
One survived / if I’m honest I think they weren’t warm enough as my intention was to bring them indoors but somehow I didn’t but luckily one did still survive in my summerhouse / when you say save yellow chillis you can eat them yellow is that what you mean
How can I contact with you?
What can I help you with? Either ask here or email address in bio
Enjoy your video's harvest something every week of every year. Even if it's only silverbeet/spinach/chard or carrots.
💯 plus all the bits we have frozen and preserved / I’ve also got over 30 squashes in my conservatory so plenty to keep me going
Hun somethings happened to the aspect ration of your video. Still lovely video.
Not sure 🤔 seems ok our end / we did have a lot of background noise from workmen and my son borrowed the camera for carting so may be the settings were off x
@@ThatsWhatWeCallTheGoodLife I think your son might have turned a filter on such as 'key hole' or some other visual style like 'dolly zoom'. I think it might be safest to factory reset the camera. Best of luck thanks for all the wonderful vids. x
📸📸📷
Thank you ☺️ for watching
Like you we still have lots of food growing, not so much ready to eat now though😢, we have nearly run out of carrots😮. It looks like you have plenty to do down there!!!😊
Always plenty to do / I plan to do some tidying up tomorrow 😊
why the oil if you're not baking/frying them?
I believe it just makes it taste nice
Thanks for the tip about keeping the brassicas covered up. I've been wondering about uncovering mine - but I know there are lots of pigeons around (it's a woodland area) so now I'll definitely keep them covered ;-). Always enjoy your vlogs - thank you.
You’re welcome ☺️
kale, chard anything like that get demolished by slugs what would you suggest I am not a fan of adding chemicals in pellets to food I am eating.
There’s no quick fix but nematodes are an option, I’m always on the look out for slugs 🐌 and snails and I remove them no matter what time of year, beer traps work well and laying down a wide plank of wood which attracts them and remove them once collected / hope that helps 😊
Try Cape gooseberry jam. X
Thank you I’ll look that up / I’m still getting plenty
Thank you for being so informative over growing veges I enjoy your videos. All those squash! What do you do with them after Halloween?
The squashes store well and I use them for all sorts of recipes, roast, soups, cakes, stews, curries, puree, mash. They really are very versatile.
Ma,am are you looking for a professional TH-cam thumbnail designer?
Thank you / we are fine at the moment
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you 😊
Thank you its a lovely video 😊
Thank you 😊 for watching 🌱
Will you be keeping Ur allotment when you move ,or are you leaving the area ?
My intention is that we will buy somewhere with enough land to not need an allotment / so I will very much continue growing fruit and vegetables but I will give up the allotment once we’ve moved until then I’ll carry on at the allotment
@@ThatsWhatWeCallTheGoodLife ooo that's so exciting ; I love my allotment but I would love land for more chickens,I'm excited to see where and what u end up with xx
It may be getting dryer in the east but here in Devon it’s totally the opposite. I know as I grew up and lived in east England But have lived in Devon for 20 years now and the rain fall has increased immensely 😇👍
It’s wet for us now but we find the spring much dryer now than it used to be
Thank you 😇👍
You’re welcome ☺️
You have a lovely attitude to presenting the information about growing food!!!
Thank you so much!
1 question I've got some rose seeds WHEN can I sow them no one on the web can tell me
I’ve found this blog about the subject which I hope you find useful blog.thompson-morgan.com/how-to-grow-roses-from-seed/
Blueberries minimal prune until you think you don't want them to be too tall. Just ensure you can pick all the blueberries easily!
Thank you ☺️
Nice tour of the plot, same as you I love to grow and eat what I grow and share with others when I have spare😊
It really is such a wonderful feeling isn’t it 😊 to share with others
Top tour
Thank you 😊
lovely to see " not an expert " for a change, you have quite a variety of fruit and veg going at the same time, we are english but with an allotment in holland, also a fairly similar selection of eatables except no apple/pear trees, well anyway enjoy your garden, cheers .
Thank you 😊 my aim is very much to help normal folk in a down to earth practical way to help ensure a good crop whilst trying to show that even for an experienced gardener it doesn’t always go to plan
Very well put together. I learned alot in a short time. Thx
Thank you ☺️ glad you found it useful
2:00 funny to see that old fool doing the backbreaking work of digging over the soil... i'd love to show him the ridiculously abundant harvest i had this year NO DIG with only a fraction of the time and energy spent
Think he likes the exercise 😊
Get so annoyed by comments about people who dig, after 32 years of no dig, can say that I now dig my carrot area over each winter, due to them becoming stumpy. Plus will also dig out problem weeds.
we don't think it's appropriate to call someone an " old fool " when he is actually out in the fresh air, gardening the way he wants to, getting exercise, that's what it's all about, everyone is a bit different
Wow, your squashes & pumpkins!
Definitely my best year ever 🎃
Great carrots!
Thanks definitely one of my better years
Thanks for the video! I’ve moved into a new home with summer raspberries. I cut back all the obviously dead canes and left the rest and pruned them a bit over the summer to stop them going out of control. It’s now October and there are half a dozen or so canes which are all quite brown but they are sprouting new green offshoots. Do you have any advice on what I should do?
They are the new canes for next years fruit so leave them and they will produce your raspberries for next year and good luck with your new plot
Thank you its a lovely video
Thank you 😊
Love the rustic shed and your knowledge
Thank you
Try wikihow - how to prune blueberries. Might find it useful. Thanks for the tour round the allotment. Very productive. Runner beans, I keep feeding with nitrogen rich fertiliser (chicken droppings), keeping them from going woody.
Thank you ☺️
my blueberrys i just take any dead of them thats it
Thank you
Great veg!
Thank you ☺️ and hope yours is doing well too
Just watched your dehydration video, as I also own one of these Andrew James dehydrators. As I'm writing this, it's fully loaded with several kgs. of apples from my back garden that I'm' trying to preserve, so as not to go to waste. I usually preserve apples via chopping them, heating with a little sugar to kill any bacteria, then putting into sterilised & sealed glass storage jars. But I've had a bumper harvest this year in Colchester & I've run out of jars, so trying dehydration & going to try freezing another load tomorrow. Trying to live 'the Good Life', the self-sufficient life & the prepping life, all in moderation.
Awesome 🤩 there’s nothing like enjoying your own food
I still have some in the ground potatoes
I’ve had a particularly good year with potatoes 🥔 hope yours have done well too
That is a LOT of beans seeds for next year! Good luck 👍🏻
🫘 let’s hope they dry well 😊
It's amazing what you can grow in winter
It definitely is 🌱
Wow it's amazing you still have so much crop. When is your last crop
I will pretty much have something most of the year. That being said my leeks, kale and spinach will be my last few crops which I will pick into the spring of next year when the leeks will be finished and the kale and spinach will bolt but there is always usually something as my rhubarb often crops early around Easter and I will always have something either frozen or preserved too. The squashes I pick this month will normally store well and I’ll usually still eating them in April
👍👍👍
Thank you
I'm growing from seed this year onions I mean
Awesome 🧅 I’ve never done onions from seeds except spring onions / I usually use sets but I should give them a go
@@ThatsWhatWeCallTheGoodLife totally they take longer but are better I found. I dripped my toe in one year and now converted
just got an allotment and wondering if theres anything i can plant at this time of year. thanks
Here’s some ideas 🌱 What to Plant in October for a Bumper Harvest Next Year th-cam.com/video/bdOvVonboPg/w-d-xo.html
This year was a terrible year, it rained from September until May en then June was cold and July wet. Only august en September was ok. You can understand that de squashes, the corn, the tomatoes and so on was not as it used to be. The only thing was doing great were the sugarsnaps, the chard, all kinds of brassicas and the berries. I hope next year will be better!
All years are different and don’t let it get you down as it’s so worth it / brassicas and berries are definitely one of the success stories for this year / I’m still picking broccoli 🥦 too
Thank you for the follow up on information on the squash.😊
You’re welcome ☺️ 🎃
