    I'm surprised you didn't say the word "addiction". To me at least both the behavior of the clients and especially the way the host clubs operate seem very similar to gambling addiction and casinos respectively.

    I'm soo happy this game is getting attention, with some translations here and there!! I played through the Vita sequel to the original Oreshika and was bummed the first game never was released outside of Japan, with hardly any info about it. I really want to experience it. I'm not fluent reading/speaking Japanese though. Afaik no English fan translations either. The idea you aren't just controlling one character, but an ENTIRE CLAN generation by generation in a turnbased JRPG is such a cool concept to me.

    I never wanted to like and dislike a video so badly. I'm so happy to learn about this series, but now I'm angry I can't play the original in English T_T Appreciate the time it took to go over all of this!

    Update: So started playing Oreshika myself, and been struggling on freeing all the Boss Gods and Goddesses in the game. Do you have any tips on how to give divinity back to Kubitsuri Okon? Do I need a particular setup for her?

    • @nil-nilgiree-7965
      @nil-nilgiree-7965 2 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah! To give divinity back to her, it needs to be after you defeat Shutendouji (Pre-Kitsuto's release), defeat her over two times, and your party needs to have a parent and their child. It's in Japanese, but I recommend using this online guide for your playthrough: w.atwiki.jp/oreshika_psp/

    The artwork, especially units and backgrounds in combat, is great Also, man, this whole turn based combat and the idea of a protagonist racing with time to take down demons really reminds me of The Wind and Wilting Blossom

    At the end you touch on something that i feel very strongly about. Localization, specially of older JRPG titles. One of the things that i have come to resent is that going back to older ps1 and ps2 games is that they often contain a forced dub. Not saying dubs are bad, but losing the original voice acting hurts so much and stands in direct opposition of video game preservation. All these remakes and remasters lately though do provide unique opportunities to undo the past xenophobia, but i really feel like this should have never been the case in the first place

    I don't particularly mind the incest. I think it works on the rules that like ... divine beings don't have genetics, they're magic. But I could definitely understand if it bothers some people.

    I know this a silly idea, but this typeof idea or gameplay can be ported to different setting like sci fi. Maybe a space noble dynasty like in Dune got disgraced by God/emperor/priest/noble which lead into a dynastic feud lasted for generations.

    Great video essay. I think it's also important to note women are at a disadvantage in the entire of Host systems (compared to guys going to Hostess clubs) namely because in society in general, not just Japan, women still make less money-- jobs appear very 'gendered' still. It's an assumption but it seems to me that Japanese women are usually not afforded the same ways to make money like the average man does-- given how patriarchal society is on the whole. Hostess clubs probably get big-wig businessmen coming in a lot, yet the average lady who frequents Host clubs is probably not a big-wig business woman with that kind of money to spend. Which makes it CRAZY to me that the price discrepancies between Host and Hostess clubs is so vast. And it also explains why so many women who frequent Hosts are in SW to afford the lifestyle. It was the one thing I couldn't understand about Connor's two videos about it-- why SW themselves, who are used to transactional nature of SW, and being treated like objects, would choose to stay in the 'world' of places like Kabukicho by frequenting Host Clubs. Your explanation that they do it to afford to do it, makes so much sense and it makes it so incredibly sad to me, as it makes it feel extremely predatory. It's exactly like a gambling problem, or getting people addicted to micro-transactions, if not worse because it uses so many tactics that should be reserved for genuine intimacy. Instead of being a way of empowering women and like a 'reverse' hostess club, it's just another way for women to be exploited by men. Wow.

    It was "There Was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly" in Preschool. I couldn't emotionally grapple with the fact that Mankind would be so cruel as to make a cheap, tinny sing-along button to a musical picture book which evoked the looming spectre of Death. Also, I love the Emergent Storytelling segment- that's straight up Dwarf Fortress bullshit, its great.

    I feel like the misogyny, as well as the macho sentiment of "men must suffer and sacrifice their relationships to follow their dreams no matter what" kinda betrays an emotional immaturity from the writer. How the fuck are the female characters immature for expecting a degree of commitment to a relationship, y'know? I understand that working in creative industries risks those compromises being made whether you want them or not, but it comes off as the attitude of young boys who lack perspective.

    This seems to me like a broken situation for both parts involved. Young men who are broken by the age of 30 due to drinking massively every day and who break women luring them into fake relationships. Broken women who get addicted and lean into sex work to maintain the expensive fake relationship. On top of them, I suppose the business owners are making huge money while overlooking caos. Nasty. It's so interesting how they have perfected such strange and evil but effective business by picking into human weaknesses

    From what I understand, this game was basically the precursor of modern roguelikes. It really reminded me of Rogue Legacy, basically the same plot. It's such a shame they dropped the ball on the second one. Having an immortal character sounds to me a perfect contrast to the player's family that are ephemeral. There was so many opportunities for her to see how it sucks having people dear to her go. Instead, she came off as egocentric, your whole family served HER, and the player should be "grateful" for it. A bummer, but gameplay looks good! I'm learning Japanese myself, I hope one day I can play this

    To be fair "keeping it in the family" is a prevalent thing in a lot of old mythology and legends involving deities. Take Izanagi and Izanami or (in some cases), Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi..

    I've been living in Japan for 20 years, and frankly, I just don't get host / hostess clubs. Years ago, when I was in my early 30s, a co-worker of mine took me to a couple of clubs. I just couldn't understand what was fun about paying someone to be pretend to be interested in you (never liked strip clubs back in the US, either). I've got nothing against sex work, but seems like anyone who confuses sex with romance would be better off spending their ¥ on some therapy.

    On the topic of PSP version getting translated by Sony, that's never gonna happen. Sony has they odd restriction on all old games getting rereleased on PSN which forbids any alterations to the original material. If there were bugs on the PS1 they cannot be fixed, if the game was only available in Japanese, no translation is allowed to be released etc. A translation can only be released as a "new game" which is why we got Moon and that Kowloon dungeon crawler released as full release rather than a PS1/2 on PS4. It's really really stupid cause I can imagine being able to officially release a translation to an old game in form of an emulated title would be quite attractive for publishers.
