A 0.5% endowus fee on top of the fees charged by the underlying fund is quite steep. Even 0.3% is quite steep compared to purchasing etfs using a low cost brokerage account. It must be borne in mind that those fees are recurring, not one off. The endowus fee can be considered “low” only in the context of HK and similar Asian countries where investors have had to endure extraordinarily high fees. One difference between HK and Singapore is that a larger percentage of the Singaporean population seem more receptive to the idea of low cost passive investing. In HK there is a need for awareness of the problem of high fund fees, plus greater demand for products with lower fees. It’s extraordinary that HK is stuck in a situation resembling the US in the 1960s, before the index fund revolution.

See my article on SA. Summary BYD is about to become the largest EV company by sales in the world, eclipsing Tesla, judging by their relative sales in the fourth quarter of 2023. This is bound to draw investor attention to BYD. Yet, its financial history is relatively unknown, due to the absence of a US listing, even though BYD has ADRs. BYD is as discreet in its achievements as Tesla is flamboyant, but it's precisely this investor unawareness that leads to a valuation gap that offers an incredible opportunity. This article focuses on BYD's financial history and valuation metrics and compares them to Tesla. The valuation differential is electrifying, especially in light of future revenue trajectories. BYD is a 'Strong Buy' here on a standalone basis. In addition, despite Tesla's strong investor loyalty and cult status, a pair trade (short Tesla) should reap handsome rewards.

You had a fair value of around $100 for JD only a few months ago. What credibility do analysts have when all they do is track prices with their targets, to the extent that the valuation of a large cap company is chopped in more than half in a few months? And PDD is somehow favored because they sell leather jackets for $2? It just feels that, as long as the shares are outperforming in the short term, there will always be a narrative to support it. JD Retail’s operating margin has expanded from 1.5% in FY18 to near 4% in FY23 and JD Logistics is now on the verge of profitability as it scales, all while shares have done nothing but plummet: they must have been doing something right. Selling leather jackets for $2, on the other hand, doesn’t strike me as a promising business model. I am surprised that Temu doesn’t face tougher regulation in USA.
