There are a lot of similarities between Nixon and Khrushchev. Both of them are shrewd politicians. Both of them have a cordial relationship with each other (something tells me that Stalin wouldn't have cooperated with the Americans after the Truman Doctrine). However, one of them is trying to broker peace while impressing America by implying that they won the Space Race. Sure, it was under Khrushchev that Laika, Belka, Strelka, Gagarin, and Tereshkova became the first dogs, man, and woman in space. But it was under LBJ and Nixon that the United States sent the first orbiters to Mars, the first picture of Earth from the Moon, and finally, we Americans beat the Soviet Union by sending the first men to the Moon. The Soviets never made "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." And they couldn't colonize Venus, as seen by their Venera landings. It was clear what side would win the Cold War even when Khrushchev was alive. The Soviet Union lost because it doesn't exist anymore. The United States has existed for 250 years now, and God willing, it will exist for 250 years more.

The Soviets were always very concerned about Western colonialism, and much less so about the fact that they themselves were the only European colonial power to maintain complete control over all their colonies in Asia and the Caucasus right until 1991.

I worked in the evenings back then, so I was watching Regis and Kelly during that time (it aired in Canada, apparently that episode never aired in the States due to the news). At the same time I was listening to Stern - which had a 7 minute delay. It was surreal seeing this on TV live. There was some Canadian channels that had their news correspondent in NY, so they had some unique angles too, unfortunately it is now "lost media" since no one taped or shared their broadcasts online. I remember hearing the new reporter stop describing the building due to silently crying. I think this was CHCH channel 11. We also had Telelatino and I just could not watch their coverage since they were showing people jumping off the buildings live on air.

Keep in mind that when this debate occurred in 1959 the USSR looked like a viable alternative to many people in the world. Whether the US would prevail over the USSR was an open question and far from obvious. By the way, in the interests of full disclosure, I watched this on TV when I was seven years old, and of course I was a patriotic American. When I said to my parents that wished Khrushchev would die, they responded that one should take care about wishing that because you might get someone worse as his replacement. The Soviet Union sure got someone worse when Brezhnev pushed Khrushchev aside. At least Brezhnev and his crew held back from assassinating Khrushchev.

Obviously, the Cold War was a big expensive fraud.

Khrushchev was awesome. and for the record his 'we will bury you' was not a threat of physical action, but more like "we Soviets will build a much better country than you Americans". it was a shitty translation, and i hate that when Khrushchev is brought up that 'Bury You' comment always gets flak. languages and translations are incredibly interesting.

Every few years, this event beckons for my undivided attention spanning a week or so before it’s quelled. I still find myself amazed that the events unfolded in the sequence they did - as though scripted like a movie. Every 15-20 minutes, like clockwork, there is some new catastrophe and that doesn’t stop for an hour and 42 minutes: perfect movie length. There’s a certain diabolical poetry to how the north tower is hit first but falls last. Both towers fell, not just one. And the 16 minutes and 24 seconds that separate the first crash from the second allow for all eyes worldwide to tune in just long enough to grow familiar with what is at first a paralyzing sight before a paralysis orders of magnitude more gripping overwhelms them. Upon reexamination, one learns that hundreds of trapped occupants of the towers were so overcome by smoke inhalation that they opted to fall a thousand feet to their deaths than attempt to withstand another second inside the burning towers, and the constriction gains a new dimension of severity. Then, after watching the pentagon burn for a few minutes, we bear witness to the collapse of one tower and spend the next 29 minutes in denial of the imminent fate of the other. Again, after a deeper dive into the day’s events, one learns that a third tower collapsed that day - a fact I personally didn’t stumble upon until 2014. Not to be misunderstood here, but I just honestly cannot believe how well-executed this plan was given the limitations with which it was devised and carried out. To this day, tower 2 still has not been rebuilt. The son of a slain office worker from that day recently tried to commit s***ide in the memorial pool. And thousands of affected first responders still suffer from PTSD and other life-altering or even terminal illnesses from the toxins they breathed in at ground zero for days and weeks. When we say “never forget,” I’d like to think those people are the main subjects of our attention. Heroes like Orio Palmer deserve statues. And the yearning to understand and overcome what inspired these attacks dwells in the minds of every humanitarian who lived to witness that day - the moments we watched the world we once enjoyed simply, quite literally, vanish into thin air.
