Woodturning-Transforming Lathe Practice into Profitable Honey Dippers
Honey Dippers are so easy to make, great spindle turning practice and sell quickly at craft shows! So follow me along as I practice with my skew chisel and spindle gouge on these profitable craft show spindle turning projects.
I knock out 10 of these in no time using red oak, Siberian elm and silver maple hardwoods. I cut my spindle blanks to 7"x1"x1" on my Rikon bandsaw and then turned on my Rikon wood lathe. This was such a fun woodturning project, I'm pretty sure this will become a regular item to turn both for practice and for selling at craft shows like spinny tops.
*EDIT* I nuked like 30min of me turning 9 additional honey dippers and rambling on like a madman lol

But as I progress and want more tools and a bigger lathe and more equipment to progress further down my journey, the money needs to come from somewhere. It's a good machine! I'm fixing to do a full 1 yr review here in November. I don't have a lot to compare to, my first and only other lathe being a Harbor Freight 12x36. Great machine though and quite the upgrade. My only complaint is the optional legs, way to flimsy for a guy who is always trying to max out his lathe with large and uneven pieces. Other than that it's good to go!

      The chuck is meh and OK at best. It has left rings and scratch marks on the inside of two bowls now. The rubber o rings have already started to come unglued after two uses and don't provide enough of a buffer from the hard plastic. I've bought a bunch of different diameter pvc and a 1¼-8 tap so I can make my own chucks with some small scraps. I'm not sure how I feel about the system in general, that plastic njpple is definitely a weak point and cause for concern, last thing you want is a 90% finished project flying at your face or smashing to pieces. I'll have to use it a few more times a check back in with a 6month review or something. Thanks for the input bud.

    Very nice Ray. The polymerized tung oil finish was a good choice. There is a difference between the walnut oils. You may have to look very carefully, but the salad dressing stuff needs to be refrigerated once it has been opened. In other words, it goes rancid. It can also cause people with tree nut allergies to have reactions. The oil you get at the turning store has been heated to kill the enzymes that cause allergies. It also causes to oil to be stable, it doesn’t go bad. So, that’s the reason for the price difference.

    • @Ray-DacaTimberworksWoodturning
      @Ray-DacaTimberworksWoodturning 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks Doug I really appreciate and value your feedback. The allergy thing is sobhard tobdeal with, I mean half the woods we deal with are nut trees like oak, hickory, walnut and pecan. I've read that Mahoneys and Dr woodshop filters the proteins that trigger reactions. Tung oil is derived from a nut too, now I know the polymerized stuff is treated but i don't know about the various 100% pure varieties out there. I guess I hope or assume anyone with severe nut allergies would just stay away from hardwood products? So with this oil I use i sand with at high rpms 1000 or so generating heat, I then burnish it in with a paper towel at as high a rpm as safe and really cook the oil in, this is also removing the slurry prior to abrasive paste. I've kept the jug of oil in my garage forba year now but will keep an eye on it for it going rancid. Thanks buddy.

    Beautiful bowl Ray. I had a piece of wood recently that someone literally said it wasn’t worth the effort. I persisted with it and the piece turned out to be gorgeous. Way to hang in through the issues to complete this one. When using the black CA, a good coat of sanding sealer will prevent the glue from staining the surrounding wood and save a bit of turning/sanding to get beyond the stain. You were wondering what the wood is. FOG is a sure fire. More specifically, the bottom gives it away. That grain screams to me that this wood is Sycamore.

    • @Ray-DacaTimberworksWoodturning
      @Ray-DacaTimberworksWoodturning 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @DennisDolan-fl3mw some use moisture meters, others use a formula of 1 year plus 1 additional year per inch of thickness. Weighing the bowls is a great option also you get a baseline weight and re weigh every so often and when it stops losing weight it's usually good to go.

  • @DennisDolan-fl3mw
    @DennisDolan-fl3mw 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

    what do you use to seal, where do you seal, why and when do you seal? do you seal and let it continue to dry? if you seal aren't you preventing the moisture from getting out? I don't understand and have so much to learn. really appreciate videos like yours. thanks.

    • @Ray-DacaTimberworksWoodturning
      @Ray-DacaTimberworksWoodturning 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @DennisDolan-fl3mw ok I'll try to break some of this down for you, I could make a ton of videos and write pages on it. But you can't stop the moisture from leaving, we simply try and slow it down. When the moisture leaves to rapidly or from one area faster than another it stresses the wood and it cracks. So wood is basically a bundle of straws that carry water from the roots to the leaves and back. We try and plug the end of the straws or the endgrain and make the water leave the sides and barkbat a much slower rate. I use anchorseal which is a wax emulsion, or Elmer's glue because it's cheap. People use other things such as latex paint and cling wrap. It's best to seal the logs the day it is cut, then any time you cut the wood again and it won't be in it's finished form. This step is completely unnecessary if you begin with kiln or air dried wood. This is a green wood technique.

    Just found your channel & subscribed. Like what I am seeing so far. I haven't gotten around to building a kiln yet, but with 100+ bowl blanks already dry, I may never get around to building one. When someone gives me a tree trunk to turn, I rough out as many as I can & put them in paper flour sacks with shavings to dry. After 6-8 months I take them out & reuse the sacks & stack the bowls on shelves. I am also a wood hoarder. My shop looks a lot like yours. I do mostly bowls, as that seems to be my main passion. I keep watching videos for other things but go back & turn another bowl.

      That's awesome brother! It's hard to explain wood hoarding to somone, it just sounds crazy and incomprehensible, but it's real lol! I love bowls, they are my favorite, lately I've been trying to teach myself spindle work though, it seems to do well at the small craft shows. Thanks for stopping in, it's always good to find and chat with like minded people.

      I really appreciate that, I want it to be clear that I'm new and learning. Which makes most of us peers and going through the same or similar struggles together. I don't want to purposely mess up but at the same time I don't want an ultra edited and super refined experience. That's why Raffan is one of my absolute favorite turners to watch, he leaves his catches in his videos. It's reassuring that a master like himself still gets a bit careless and has one.

    I have some huge chunks of sycamore sitting out in a storage building. We had to have it taken down before it fell on the house (it was dead for a while). I've never turned any of it but you have inspired me. I'm going to try it. Excellent job on the bowl!

So far I've only tried 5min epoxy with some pigment powder twice, I need to watch some more videos on it. I covered it in some Elmer's and it's hanging out in the laundry room, we'll get back to it shortly.

    For that bowl to come off and fly up means that you were probably turning too fast. 1000 rpm seems to be a critical speed for bowls going up or less than 1000rpm going down. You say you were turning low rpm so something happened to make the bowl fly up. Glad to hear you’re okay

    • @Ray-DacaTimberworksWoodturning
      @Ray-DacaTimberworksWoodturning หลายเดือนก่อน

      @gregdownunderinOz thanks, I've heard this also about the rpms, I've watched the video dozens of times in slow motion, the bowl appears to come out lateral towards me at first but hits the tool rest and angles upwards. It's hard to tell but the bowl is slightly closed form, meaning the rim tapers inwards. The jaws never had the bowl, as soon as the tailstock was removed and I touched the spindle gouge to it it popped loose. I've talked to a few turners about and with the inward tapered rim I should have expanded the jaws outwards from inside the bowl like you would a Recessed mortise.
