Burnout can be confused with hopelessness especially due to debt and still not getting anywhere. Not having anything to show for working is worse than affordable debt, but debt that is eating you alive is shear hell.

Im now 4 months at home after i burnt out. Im from the Netherlands and i get paid the same when im sick. I cant emagine how it would be when you must work while burnt out because if you dont you wont get paid and you get even more stress on top of the burn out. Here you have around 2 years of being sick and get paid at the same time. You also get mental help from work because of the waiting list a psy of about 10 months Even i dont feel a bit better now no mather what i do or dont do

Platform engineering might be coming back to "normal" stage of specialization. But do not believe this is the end of the story as that would be even more naive than what it's now. This might be the reason for why AWS has succeeded and the rest are just clowns mimicking AWS and will eventually be gone or specialized in something specifically.

  • @mark-white-666

Perfectly put. It's a moronic industry made of people that have no real profession and make a tool a profession. Because of that, they are all continuously attempting to find a place to exist. but automation keeps redefining their roles and so they need to continuously morph into something else attempting to do everything so they can continue to exist.

The biggest reason for burnout is a dead-end/crap job you don't like, but have a feeling that it isn't possible to find a new one, better suited for you, also there's an attachment/comfort in your job, you got used to it even if you hate it there. The best honest advice i can give is, build enough income to switch it, or to invest in something you're interested in (business, hobby, project, etc...), instead of trying to compromise or switch perspective on things, cause usually it's not gonna improve and you'll keep wasting your time on people you don't like and job you don't want to do, even if you're good at it.

    • @samusranzer

Although, sometimes it's not the job itself, it's the team you work with. Some companies vary depending on which store and location you look at. All of the customers in my perimeter are awful, rude and agressive, and I know there are worse neighborhoods. The one thing I know is, this has to be my last retail job. I'm burnt out and can't find where else to go

I had to be admitted to intensive therapy two years ago due to burnout. Disability and the whole thing. I have just this week quit a job due to burnout. Even taking "a few days away" would not have helped. In fact, due to coming back to a massive tsunami of tasks, it would have made it worse. I'm taking a break, planning some gig work and hope to find something in my industry that allows me to work to live not live to work.

Did your study handle the fact of different technical domains? Did you control for technical domain? C++ is mostly used for safety critical, embedded and system programming. Those domains are focused on correctness, safety and applications that have inherently different life cycle than something like a web app. Is it about the problem domain or just about the tool (language)? Does this study make any sense at all?

The bigger question is, why would you waste time measuring something you don't know how to fix. And, if you do measure engagement, which of the 170 million hits Google has for that subject should you use? Engagement, whatever it is assume it can be improved, the focus should be what to do. Try to find case studies or even EE/EX suppliers citing business metrics improvements after measuring EE/EX, there aren't any. The research that's missing from the EE/EX experts and the HR thought eaders like Josh Bersin and Dave urlich is, given the exponential growth of EE/EX tools, books, experts, HR Tech, seminars Ted Talks, webinars, and billions invested, Gallup says EE/EX jsut went down. My conclusion is that HR has the responsibility with none of the authority, yet decade after decade the failed solutions are repeated. Does anyone believe HR can force change on disinterested leadership. For the record, leadership has nothing to look at to suggest they should do anything different. Here's an example of an engagement project where employee engagement was never mentioned no was any time wasted measureing. It took only ten weeks and 100% of the results were the result of employee input to a single 9-word survey question posed by the CEO. chiefexecutive.net/employee-engagement-ceos-actually-listening/

DevOps in practice has done a great disservice to Agile. Concepts like release cadence and flow are long forgotten. So is any consistent end-to-end perspective of the development cycle. Instead we now hyperfocus on operational concerns with isolated automation scattered around the place in scripts and disjointed pull requests. Companies adopt targetted git-enabled workflows without an overlayed abstraction that represents the overall delivery process, thus alienating non-technical people from processes which should be accessible to them. The word "pipeline" has been reduced to the implementation of siloed automation. Perhaps VSM is the way we can bring back a high level picture of software delivery.
