Back to First Principles with Ashish Aggarwal (#197)
Everyone knows the era of growth at all costs is over, but where does that leave us? And specifically, where does that leave founders? The answer is straightforward: founders have to start thinking like business people.
This week, Conor Bronsdon interviews Ashish Aggarwal, founder and CTO of Productive and an active investor in over 30 companies.
Ashish shares his insights on how startups are adapting to the new “efficient growth” environment, why this paradigm shift is an opportunity for founders, and how the pressures of efficiency have created incentives for companies to move towards geo-distributed teams instead of co-located teams.

Port the entire backend sb to Postgres, replace our current embedding in memory clients to use Alloy DB and make sure you use an ORM and have it hook for created indices and partitions... 42 hours??? Lmfao. Have u even thoughr about the deployment or cicd? Also need an on cloud alloydb instance.... and need to ensure theres seperation between dev, prod, staging if not for branches and use flows. Deltas have u even thought of the deltas and the workflow so u dont have to reload?? Is this IT?? Bc it isnt dev

Burnout can be confused with hopelessness especially due to debt and still not getting anywhere. Not having anything to show for working is worse than affordable debt, but debt that is eating you alive is shear hell.

Im now 4 months at home after i burnt out. Im from the Netherlands and i get paid the same when im sick. I cant emagine how it would be when you must work while burnt out because if you dont you wont get paid and you get even more stress on top of the burn out. Here you have around 2 years of being sick and get paid at the same time. You also get mental help from work because of the waiting list a psy of about 10 months Even i dont feel a bit better now no mather what i do or dont do

The biggest reason for burnout is a dead-end/crap job you don't like, but have a feeling that it isn't possible to find a new one, better suited for you, also there's an attachment/comfort in your job, you got used to it even if you hate it there. The best honest advice i can give is, build enough income to switch it, or to invest in something you're interested in (business, hobby, project, etc...), instead of trying to compromise or switch perspective on things, cause usually it's not gonna improve and you'll keep wasting your time on people you don't like and job you don't want to do, even if you're good at it.

Although, sometimes it's not the job itself, it's the team you work with. Some companies vary depending on which store and location you look at. All of the customers in my perimeter are awful, rude and agressive, and I know there are worse neighborhoods. The one thing I know is, this has to be my last retail job. I'm burnt out and can't find where else to go

Jobs where we are micromanaged, under-appreciated and underpaid.. not given adequate breaks from hours of stress, so that we cannot even feel calm enough to recharge when we are not at work 😑 that’s a recipe for disaster. There was no repairing the relationship with my employer for all they put me through, and it took a careful examination of how other techs were treated just as poorly to overcome the gaslighting. Yet I still waited until I was at the point that my body could no longer move. It creeps up gradually like a frog slowly coming to boil. We need better support systems. It shouldn’t be like this for so many of us that we feel unable to have boundaries.

I had to be admitted to intensive therapy two years ago due to burnout. Disability and the whole thing. I have just this week quit a job due to burnout. Even taking "a few days away" would not have helped. In fact, due to coming back to a massive tsunami of tasks, it would have made it worse. I'm taking a break, planning some gig work and hope to find something in my industry that allows me to work to live not live to work.

Did your study handle the fact of different technical domains? Did you control for technical domain? C++ is mostly used for safety critical, embedded and system programming. Those domains are focused on correctness, safety and applications that have inherently different life cycle than something like a web app. Is it about the problem domain or just about the tool (language)? Does this study make any sense at all?

This is the definition of non-systemic thinking. If you want to change the system, invite the people within the system to change. Adjusting the process and dealing with the increased friction is 20th century thinking.
