It’s always a great idea whenever possible to have a close look at Mozart’s autograph score of ‘late’ masterpieces such as this Sinfonia written Nov-Dec 1786 before a trip to Prague in mid-Jan 1787 to oversee the Prague production of Le Nozze di Figaro which won over the Czech capital completely - causing Guardasoni (impressario of the Bohemian Estates Theatre, now the Tyl Theatre which is still thankfully standing & in use to this day) to arrange a 250 dukat scrittura (which included 50 dukaten for travel expenses, hotels & firewood) for a brand new opera for Prague due to be perform’d in September-October 1787 … M. would eventually have Lorenzo da Ponte adapt Bertoti’s recent 1-Act libretto for ‘The Stone Guest’ into a full-length 2-Act ‘Drama Giocosa’-later call’d ‘D: Giovanni o sia Il dissoluto punito)-with Act II (except for the last 4 scenes which included the ‘dinner-guest finale’) being more or less newly invented out of whole cloth (which gave Da Ponte & Mozart both more than one headache-by late August their respective facing hotel-rooms allowed more than one shouting match between them - guests said their screaming at each other could be heard on the street below - what a pity tape-recorders had not yet been invented yet ! As for the players in the pit ‘My true orchestra is in Praha, the players there understand my music perfectly !’ M. us’d to quip… M. may have us’d Joseph Haydn’s own Sinfonia in D (‘number 86’) from Feb-March 1786 as his closely imitated stylistic model - especially their respective opening movements of this technical masterpiece that has been a part of the Symphonic repertoire [and rightfully-so !] ever since it was first perform’d & conducted by M. himself in Prague in Jan 1787 during ‘Carnival Season’ (26 Dec 1786 through 27 Feb 1787) I.e. before ‘Lent’ started … This beautiful work of western art music just never seems to get old - always fresh as the pristine waters of the purest untouched creek !
