    At first, being detached from centralized websites will feel a lot lonely. That's because you're used to the absolute size of the crowd over at those big sites. Think of it like being in a concert. It's nice for spending the good time once in a while, but you can't play sports with your friends in a crowd like that. You go over to places like playgrounds, and digital spaces like discord for that.

    This sounds interesting and I keep coming back to this idea. But here's the thing, I went to some of these sites, and I would say 90 percent of them seemed to be gay-oriented. Did I just stumble onto some gay ones, or is that just the crowd that seems to be into this? I don't want to put time into making a unique website and the only people who see it are gender-obsessed zoomers.

      Also, wouldn't your site still be at risk of being shut down if you blogged about stuff the establishment doesn't allow? Like what if you had a site about vaxx dangers? Or tracking crimes committed by groups of people who can't be discussed? Would your site really be allowed to function?

    Hi! I just want to say that I do not recommend Wordpress. I used to like it, but they've removed the ability to personalize your website at all unless you subscribe to a paid plan. Not fun! I know it wasn't like this before because a couple of years ago I made a website on their platform and there was at the very least a bare minimum for personalization. By bare minimum, I mean color scheme. Now you can't do that. And the templates that they offer for free are so ugly! All the nice ones are behind a paywall now.

    Visual Studio is massive overkill for making a simple frontend only site. Better to recommend editors like: sublime text, atom, vs code/codium.

    "we just need to change the culture by telling people" is not a material solution like regulation is. These platforms are designed to be addictive. Lil Billy won't self-host his Mastodon instance because the arguments to do so were rationally compelling. Most adults can't be trusted to understand they're addicted to these things. Maybe friends/loved ones, not an entire culture.

    Hello, I think the title of the video is unhelpfully obfuscating the subject you are discussing. By this I mean "Eastern" is not synonymous with Japanese. Although "Eastern" is not "Oriental," I feel that they can become near-synonyms. What I mean by this is using terms like "Eastern" and "Oriental" are reductive in their descriptiveness and, what's more, in their being reductive, they suggest the logic of Orientalism (they suggest the idea of a hegemonic Orient). I don't mean to attack you in any way. The motivation for my commenting is instead that this pattern of language use is something that irks me specifically, and so I focus in on it whenever it comes up. Your use of the term is not original sin, is what I am saying. Regardless. Interesting video, thank you for sharing your findings.

    Great video but I do have one problem with the editing itself. The super fast montage of pictures (ex:@ 5:00 in the video) really hurts my eyes. I would suggest that the speed of how fast the images change is slowed down a bit. Thanks for reading.

    is the webserver only for previewing the site? what difference is there between a private webserver and opening the html file with a browser? am i completely misunderstanding this? i code in visual studio then preview with firefox on windows and i didn’t have to set up anything special for that (i’m very new to all this, only know a little html and css)

    • @_remblanc
      @_remblanc 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      using a local web server to preview/debug webpages things grants benefits such as being closer to a real world web server setup and having the ability to actually experience and exploit the quirks of such a setup. they also offer benefits that are really good for local development, such as hot reloading, i.e. reloading the page automatically when you make edits/save things

    • @_remblanc
      @_remblanc 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      generally the benefits aren’t as apparent when you start out, but they become more pronounced the more you try advanced things such as, say, backend interaction, or frontend frameworkd

    Hi, I love all of your videos. Have you looked into this thing called Cursor AI? I learned about it from a video on Twitter where a kid uses it to code a website for her. From what I have gathered about it, it's basically a fork of Visual Studio Code with an AI built into it. You can tell the AI what you want from it and it will try to make it. As someone with literally zero experience/training in coding HTML or CSS, I have been using this AI to code my website for me, testing it in a test server as I go along. So far, I have had very few minor hiccups in making a website so far, and within a day I managed to make a mostly complete, fun little personal website featuring some external links as well as a portfolio, blog and about page. Hopefully, I can finish my site soon and publish it on Neocities or something.

    "if you are on windows [...] you don't have the terminal" is untrue to the point that there is literally an official terminal app called "windows terminal". i develop and push my site from windows, and i haven't been having issues with that myself. i can agree that linux/unix is a better experience, as i also work from my mac and have experience with linux, but wsl is also a thing that works quite well.

    I find "it limits your freedom of speech" to be not so compelling. You got to be very far away from what's considered acceptable to run into that problem, considering all the card-carrying swastika-wearing nazis that are just fine on "traditional" social media (and alt-tech social media is usually just people who got banned for harassment, entirely different issue). And if you're actually there, you'll need to find a very specific host for your website anyway. Expressiveness is much more important, and maybe even worth trading discoverability for.

    all of this is the internet, I take issue with the wording here 4:52 . No? Both, social media and forums have "toxic and wrongful people saying toxic and wrongful things". It's the internet, we *can* be civil but we also be vile. If you want an example, there were forums about su-do-kuing yourself and the methods of best success where people encouraged people to do exactly that. Neither is better, just diffrent.
