Welcome to the Birds Eye Technologies TH-cam Channel.
There is a bunch of stuff on this channel but it will now be more focused on machining and making cool stuff for cool people.
I will be posting videos and doing live streams as often as I can. If you have any requests for things you would like to see on the channel, please reach out and let me know!
I have a new Tormach 1100MX cnc mill that I will be doing most of my work on. I also have a NewCarve 1000 desktop style cnc which will be used exclusively for wood and carbon fiber materials which I can't run in the Tormach. I have a bunch of upgrade parts for this and will be documenting the upgrade process along the way.
If you need a part made please reach out to me and lets make it happen!

Tormach 1100M/MX - Mist Coolant Power Outlet Install How-To
Last month, Tormach released PathPilot v2.10 and it has a lot of cool new features. (More information here: tormach.com/support/software/pathpilot/pathpilot-updates-and-notes) The most interesting, to me, is the option for both Flood and Mist coolant buttons! These are available on the main operator console. The reason this interests me is it now allows for me to easily control my wash down system that I built (video on that coming soon).
To make the mist coolant system work, you need to do some wiring upgrades inside the electrical cabinet of the machine. The I followed the instructions for this which can be found here: tormach.com/docs/download/assetlink/asset_id/749
The instructions for this are pretty straightforward, however, at the time of filming this, they are NOT correct on the verification portion. Please make sure to watch to the end to see what it should really look like.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask in the comments! Hopefully this helps you out.

Tormach 1100MX - Way Cover Upgrade
มุมมอง 789ปีที่แล้ว
Today I made a custom modification to the Tormach 1100MX and it's factory bellow-style way covers! I wasn't happy with how the chips collected and sat in the way covers then got crunch in there. I feel like it will ruin them quickly and it's just annoying to clean them out. A fellow Tormach owner on Facebook told me about this modification he made to his machine so I decided it was a good idea ...

You had your license with only 37.9 hours?!
@@elijahschindler7581 yes.
It was a light sport certificate but I had 33hrs exactly after my check ride. I was flying multiple times a week during training. First flight was 11/09/2015 and I passed my check ride on 01/19/2016 in 21 flights.
@@BirdsEyeTech Oh that makes sense! Thanks for the response!
would tthis be the same for x32 black box?
Can Anyone maybe help out with which settings need to be looked at for the spindle not wanting to stop? I have followed the guide and am running a 2.2kw (220V) water cooled spindle and HY02D223B VFD with the blackbox x32. I would very much appreiciate the help.
BTW you can remove the limit switches. They are not used on the MX machines, and only help chips to collect.
Why the ground coming from the mains is directly connected to spindle ground wire? Shouldnt be connected to vfd earth pin?
I made the mistake of skipping back to the beginning after turning up the volume from when you're talking. You legit have given me hearing damage. Please check your volume levels before uploading next time
I'd like to buy a set of those rudder brackets for the Rans S-21. Are you selling them?
Is the VFD not grounded?? Seeing nothing connected to the earth terminal (far right bottom row of black terminals on VFD at 0:38 second mark)
One more thing. Can you share link to the values you are using? Im in the middle of a build that is very simular. I also purchased the JLG 2.2 ATC, closed loop hybrid steppers and the same drives you have. However, I am using a Masso controller. This is my first ATC set up so still trying to work through all the component and wiring for sensors and valves etc. So any help would be greatly appropriated!
Hi, This project has been put on hold for now but I’m hoping to have it done in the next few months. Sorry I’m not of any help right now.
Also wondering if you figured out the wiring for the PNP sensors on the JGL spindle ?
Where did you get the cad model for the drives?
Have you hooked up the PNP sensors that are inside the JGL spindle yet? Ive been trying to figure out how to wire them.
quite a project you have going i plan on watching your progress good luck
One of these days, I'll get back to this project. I will be going a different direction with the controller though. Thinking the Masso G3 Touch.
Awesome intro brother!
My brother made it for me. He did an awesome job. Thanks for the words!
Indeed really cool!
Did you restart your path pilot? Maybe needs hard restart to recognize
Yes. More than once.
Tormach should make some metal telescoping covers for this machine.
That would be fantastic!
Your video keeps helping people over here! Ty
Do you use a touch probe? After I installed my VFD and spindle my probe seems to be in the closed position when I clip it to the bit.
I don't use one on this machine. It's quicker for me to just do it all manually.
I hope you will not have to move another house soon, because will hard to take the PC case with you! 😂 And anyway, of course It is a creative miracle. Nice job!
Thanks! Unfortunately, I will be moving soon. Still working on figuring out what to do with it...
Im looking into getting one of these machines in the future, is the back on the base cast iron or sheet metal, Im looking into maybe making some sort of Chip conveyor system for one, thanks.
The base is cast iron. LMD, the company who makes the larger chip-tray and the coolant ring, is working on a conveyor system. It should be out soon.
Very nice
Sweet! What 1/2HP pump did you purchase?
I purchased this one: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JJCR2GT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Nice 😊
Thanks
Very cool!

What do you mean? The CAD and CAM are done in Fusion360.

Such an underrated channel. Please keep at it man, one day you will strike gold!
Thank you. Working on getting more content out. This next year I am hoping to have a lot more videos.
Great video. I thought I had followed your directions completely and it would not run. I found that I had set PD004 before PD005 and it does not run that way. I reset it and set PD005 first and now it works as it should.
First time ive seen your vids pop up on my feed.... you mentioned starting with a desktop cnc. What jobs did you feel comfortable doing to get a cash flow directly from cnc machining?
I'm still working on getting a cashflow haha
PD001 = 1 PD002 = 1 PDOO3 = 400 PD004= 400 PD005 = 400 PD008 = 110 (IF YOU HAVE 220 SPINDLE SET) PD024 = 1 PD070 = 0 PD072 = 400 PD144 = 3000
P R O M O S M
Anyone having issues with the spindle stopping with the newest blackbox I’m running at like 2rpms when I turn tool off. My min max rpm is set to 24k and 0. I can also hit the stop and it stops but I can’t start it without resetting the vfd.
Mines is not stopping but its stuck at 8000 when i turn it off still working with it now
@@WoodWorkDoneBetter Have you figured it out how figured out how to get the spindle to stop at 0 rpm? I am at this stage in my build.
@@travellingpilot same problem for me... after the spindle starts spinning, the lowest I can make it go is about 5000rpm. wont go to 0 and i have to unplug the vfd power to reset it. did you get past this?
@@thebucketmouse No sadly not yet, still trying to figure it out..
Thanks for the video, great job. A couple items of note is that when I set up my VFD exactly as you stated I got the Spindle to run but it spooled up very slowly and then the VFD gave me an error [E.o.L.A] and the spindle shut down. After mucking about and swearing at it, I then set PD014 to 3.0 and PD015 to 5.0 and I also noticed that PD003 was set to 0, when I do that it will not run correctly and I get errors so I set it 400 and it's perfect now.
Wireless kit for the passive probe? Where did you get that? 1100mx wannabe here. Lol.
Hey Craig! It's the one from XoomSpeed. It is awesome. shop.xoomspeed.com/collections/cnc-accessories/products/wireless-probe-kit
@@BirdsEyeTech Thanks, looks pretty cool! I watched the video. Is the electronics enclosure pretty tight? it looks like it just snaps onto the probe. It looks like it could be knocked off.
@Craig's Machine Shop it's very secure. I have never thought it might get knocked off.
@@BirdsEyeTech Thanks, I will have to seriously consider it!
@@craigsmachineshop2040 can't go wrong with it.
Nice. Need to get closer with the cam.
Agreed! I am working on getting better camera angles! The next part machining video will have much better views. Thanks for the comment!
@@BirdsEyeTech On my own home machine I fix the camera to the table which makes it look like the spindle is moving. Doing this also allows me to super speed the video rate like this th-cam.com/users/shorts2D0PqUjZN8s
Thanks for taking the time to put out good content on running these machines. I’m only two years into the machining world and graduating soon with a machining degree. The goal is to have my own machine in 3 years and i’ve been leaning towards a tormach. The amount of content out there for these machines is quite minimal so i’m glad to of found your channel! Keep it up!
Thanks for the note and congrats on your degree. Honestly you probably have more knowledge than I do at this stage. I'm just learning as I go and hope to share with others as I do.
Looking forward to see more! A tip is to order iso20 holders from aliexpress, much cheaper than partfaite and holds the same tolerances. Are you planning to use breake resistor?
Thanks for the tip. I personally am not a fan of aliexpress though. I've only ordered one time from there where it actually arrived in any useful amount of time. What do you mean a break resistor?
@@BirdsEyeTech yeah some things at aliexpress is bad, other are quite good. It's hard to know the difference. Regarding a break resistor, it will help you spindle to come to a com plete stop much faster
Good work!
Thank you
I heard you say you might go with bigger lines. I have the bigger pump as well and switched to using a garden hose, flexzilla one. Its worth it! Used a garden nozzle for the washdown as well its so much faster.
Oh thats a good idea. I'll look into that. Is that going into your coolant ring also or just for washdown?
@Birds Eye Technologies I did both, I know the nozzles bottle neck down but it still improved the flow a bunch.
I am hoping you might do a video on the spindle wiring and air hook-up. I have the baby brother and I am completely lost.
Yes when I get to that point I will definitely do one. Not sure when that will be yet however
Very very very very very very very coooool
PLEASE!!!! Help me with the wiring on this spindle. I just received my 3.2kw BT30. Ive got all the air lines sorted but I dont know what to do with the sensor wires. SUBBED.
I havent made it that far yet but to my understanding the sensor wires will hookup to one of your inputs on your controller that will tell your controller if there is a tool loaded or not. It's basically like a homing switch where is either enabled or disabled. What controller are you using?
Looks like non of the windows for settings are showing on this... sorry about that. I'll have that fixed next time for sure.
This video is perfect. I walked thru and was all set up the first time around. Thank you!
Glad it helped!
Thanks for putting together such a great video! Hope you have lots of success with your new 1100MX!
Thanks! Loving it so far and am out in the garage making parts as I type this.
Would love to see how you wired everyone up.
I would too! HA This upgrade got put on hold due to my normal day job getting insanely busy. Then I ended up purchasing a Tormach 1100MX in Feburary and have been playing with that. I am planning on finishing this within the next month or two but I might be switching controllers to the MASSO G3 Touch. I'm doing research on it now to see if it's better than the Acorn setup I purchased already. Stay tuned and subscribe if you haven't. I'll be posting more videos.
@@BirdsEyeTech the Masso has been something I’ve had my eye on too. If you get your hands on one, I would love to hear your thoughts on it. All the best
@@BirdsEyeTech Probe basic variant of linuxcnc with a mesa fpga board. Better than PathPilot. I'd love to help you out with this as I have 3 Workbees and a Shapeoko as well.
Where did you get the z tool touch off from?
The probe and the Z tool setter are from Drewtronics.
@@BirdsEyeTech cheers! I have the same spindle and the acorn board, but I have no experience in wiring or electrical work. I hope you could share your wiring with us :).
Can u offer some info about the TS sistem ? A brand and a series? Thanks
The TS System?
@Birds Eye Technologies yes the tool setter. The device that measures the tool lenght :)
Sorry I didn't realize you were taking about the tool setter. It is from DrewTronics.
Nice work! If you want a tip : I remove all the G30 after tool changes, such a waste of time.
Yeah.... Definitely need to do that. I'll remove them on the next parts I post out.
Got to love David Loomes Wireless probe kit :D
Yes! It's absolutely awesome! However it isn't even close to being water proof... so I'm going to make it waterproof so I can store it in the ATC and use it without intervention during runs.
