Exploration of an Old Schoolhouse in Rural Southwest MI!

I grew up in Bellevue and spent much of my youth exploring those old ruins. For anyone who’s interested, it was the Portland Cement Factory and was built sometime in the early 1900’s. It was a major hub in Eaton county for many years before it finally closed down. I did a bunch of research a few years ago after my daughter became obsessed with the area after a visit. It’s pretty cool, but also can be dangerous as nature has reclaimed most of the area. Definitely worth checking out though.

I grew up right down the railroad tracks from there. It's an old cement factory complex. We used to play BB gun wars or hide & seek there as kids in the 80s. It was already in rough shape back then, but it really went downhill in the 90s-00s when it was used by adults for paintball. I would be careful back there. It's not what I'd call entirely stable. The area where you entered was one of the two entrances of the Keene Environmental Center... basically just a park with trails and boardwalks winding around the old limestone quarries. At the National Cemetery there are the graves of 26 German POW's who died during their stay there. 16 of those graves belong to the men who were killed when the truck they were riding in bringing them back to the camp after working on area farms, jobs which they loved and were loved by the farmers for the help, was struck by a train.
