What stops the high dc voltage grounding/leaking if something went wrong inside? Has anyone found that setting a charge limit to 80% (or lower) in the LEAF 40kWh actually slows down battery SOH degradation in Leaf Spy Pro (or equivalent apps)? Just curious to find out if there's evidence that charging to 80% or less has any real impact on battery health. Thanks :)

    • @christiankaiser6562
      @christiankaiser6562 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Keeping the car, as Paul states, in the range of 20..80% SoC is the best suggestion you can give for the chemistry of the Leaf batteries. If you change to 100%, don't let the car sit with that for an extended period (days or weeks). For an optimum, charge it the previous day as it will not stay at 100% for long, but the battery can cool off during the night until you start driving (important when you start a long distance drive)

    • @christiankaiser6562
      @christiankaiser6562 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As a side note, this is battery chemistry dependent (just want to stress it for other readers here). The LFP cells of my Tesla Model 3 should be charged every week or so to 100% (to allow the BMS to improve the estimation of the SoC as the cell voltage does not indicate the SoC state good enough, the V/SoC curve is too horizontal) and when I enter a destination in Teslas planning system, it happens that the car tells me I will arrive at planned 3% at a charger (what I definitely will not do - although the forecast of the Tesla is often really precise - for security, and DC charging at 3%... well.. gives me goose bumps)

    • @decimal1815
      @decimal1815 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@NissanEVOwnersUK yes I know about the electro chemistry good practice with these batteries but just wondered if anyone had evidence from practical experience that the charge limiting has a measurable impact on degradation in the LEAF 40. Battery balancing is also important in this case, presumably, as with the LEAF 24.

    • @NissanEVOwnersUK
      @NissanEVOwnersUK 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@decimal1815 we've got the science answer, that should be good enough. There haven't been long term comparative studies examining 80% charged cars Vs 100% charged cars, but don't let the absence of such studies disprove or weaken the advice. Reference balancing; there's a lot of misinformation here. A Nissan battery ( and likely most others) is balancing most of the time. The only times balancing is stopped is when the pack is in a very high or very low state of charge. If you're avoiding those, you don't need to worry about balancing - it's happening without your needing to do anything.

    I LOVE MY 2012 LEAF. I agree that the decision to use the 24kWh battery was correct due to price. A bigger battery would have meant a higher cost, which would have put me off. When I purchased I took into account that it would be a city car. Living in Perth, Australia, distances between cities are far greater than in Europe / U.K.. I consciously decided that if I wanted to travel outside the city at that time, I would hire a fossil fuel burner. Today I could hire a modern E.V. With the required range. Perth (Oz) may not be Phoenix, but can still be hot, and it was not good for those early LEAFs. Given the Phoenix experience, I question why Nissan did not learn the lesson and incorporate thermal management in subsequent models. I congratulate Nissan on being a trail blazer in the E.V. field and producing a sturdy, quality vehicle. Apart from the HV battery, in eleven years, I have not had to replace any part, other than the consumable cabin air filter - brilliant.

      It's now November 2023, and this bill has been passed, and it states all new E.V public chargers must have a contact less payment pad on chargers

    The Kiwi company is EVs Enhanced. They are working on a “16 Blade” LEAF battery with thermal management. But first orders will go to Nu Zeeelund residents. I thoroughly recommend EVs Enhanced as a result of their assistance when I upgraded my 24kWh LEAF to 40kWh in Perth ( Southern Hemisphere, guys ). They modified the electronics in my BMS to suit and provided a great conversion kit. I was greatly relieved that this talk did not get as deeply technical as the intro suggested 😉
