How to Control Duckweed and Blanket Weed in Lakes
In this video, we visit a beautiful local lake to discuss the problems a lot of lake or large pond owners face. Lakes are notorious for producing large amounts of duckweed, blanket weed, algae blooms and even green water. Ash explains exactly why this is and how to control the levels of these so that they don’t take over your lake or large pond entirely.
Ash discusses everything from the root cause of the problem (pond sludge) to the simple and effective methods you can use to deal with it. These include monitoring the surroundings of your pond, introducing aeration and using beneficial bacteria.
We hope you enjoy the video and get some useful tips and advice for your lake or large pond. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. You can comment on the video below or email us at info@envii.co.uk.

      Thanks! A layer of coarse sand under the liner helps protect it from punctures. If you just put liner on the soil there could be sharp debris that could rip the liner. 😊

    A note on herons, we moved in on their land and bulldozed their ecosystem. If we build wildlife ponds, we should expect wildlife to visit them, including herons. My suggestion is to build a deeper pond so fish can swing lower and hide from herons, or, stock the pond with fish for the herons to eat. We want resilient, biodiverse ecosystems, not pretty water features for humans to hoard more and more of the natural world for ourselves.

    Is a filter system a must have?

    • @enviipond
      @enviipond 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching. If you have a wildlife or more 'natural pond', you don't need a filter system. However, if you are keeping fish or want to keep the water clear all year round, a filter system will greatly benefit you as it introduces new oxygen into the pond and keeps it well aerated. Hope this helps!

    One question for you are fish getting less hardy what I ask this is when I was a young lad my dad had a pond and we had freezing weather for about 8 weeks even the sea on the beaches froze we could walk on the local Broad we had about 8 inches of ice on our pond and in the spring when it had all melted we didn’t lose any of the fish

    • @enviipond
      @enviipond 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for watching. The fish in your pond when you were young may have been hardier due to selective pressures or the way they were bred. Nowadays, many ornamental fish, like those bred for home ponds, might not be as resilient, so carrying out a few jobs before the cold snaps to help your fish can certainly help. And in our experience, it's worth doing the things discussed in this video as we head towards the winter season. Hope this helps.

Apologies for the confusion, but in fact we would recommend waiting a few days between these applications rather than 24 hours! Guys the pond in my girlfriends parents garden probably about 5-6 times the size of this will this product clear the 2 ft of silt and sludge at the bottom of the pond and kill the duck weed ??

    • @enviipond
      @enviipond 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, thank you for watching. Using Sludge Klear on a regular basis will certainly clear the silt and sludge at the bottom of the pond providing adequate amounts of the product are used. It will also starve the duckweed over time and reduce it. It won't target and kill the duckweed directly though, Sludge Klear targets only the nutrients that feed the duckweed. Feel free to get in touch with us via email (info@envii.co.uk) if you need more information. Thanks!

    HI. I'm a complete newbie to ponds. My pond has gone green and no matter what I have tried, it still goes green. I've lived here for 6 years and this has only started in the last year (at most). There's no fish in it anymore a heron took them, there are plants in there, and a waterfall. I have put a new UV bulb in, and emptied the pond, washed it out (took forever doing this) and filled up with mostly rain water. There's no overhanging trees etc. I have looked into using the pond clear but how often would I need to put it in? Its not a massive pond, about 3000 litres ?Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

    • @enviipond
      @enviipond 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there, thank you for watching and thank you for your question. If you're fairly certain on the volume being roughly 3000 litres, we would recommend using 75ml of Envii Pond Klear every 7 days and you should start to notice a difference within 6 - 8 weeks. This timeframe could be shorter or longer depending on how green the water is. It's also worth checking the pH regularly and if needed use something like Envii Pond Equaliser to bring the pH up to neutral (7.5-8.5). You would be best getting the 1L Pond Klear as this will give you roughly 6 treatments. Alternatively, to give you more treatments for the long term, you could opt for Pond Klear Xtra. You only need to use 30ml every 7 days of this giving you more than enough treatments for the long term. Pond Klear: www.envii.co.uk/pond-water-treatments/green-water-treatment/pond-klear/ Pond Klear Xtra: www.envii.co.uk/pond-water-treatments/green-water-treatment/pond-klear-xtra/ Hope this helps. A lot of rain in a short period of time can lead to a pH crash, especially if the rain is more acidic than usual. Test your pH using pond test strips or use Pond Equaliser to keep your pH safe and stable. Find out more here: www.envii.co.uk/pond-blog-post/pond-ph-crash

    Very impressive video. But I would like to ask what are the steps to setting up a duckweed farm? Does duckweed require any amount of manure? If yes then what is the best type of manure to be used? Tnx

    • @enviipond
      @enviipond 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, thank you for watching. Unfortunately duckweed farms are beyond our scope of knowledge! We predominantly cover content on ponds. However, going off our general knowledge of gardening, manure will certainly benefit growth and any type of manure will work fine, just make sure the manure is well composted to reduce risk of ammonia toxicity!

    If it sinks the sludge to the bottom, how's my pump supposed to get it out

    • @enviipond
      @enviipond 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for watching. Usually a pump would be positioned at the bottom of the pond near where sludge and organic waste settles which allows it to easily remove it. In addition to the pump, the bacteria also break down the excess waste over time.

    5 weeks in to a new pond. Had ammonia spike and now nitrite. And a load of sting algae. Just treated it today with your algae klear today. Just hoping the nitrites lower soon

    • @enviipond
      @enviipond 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, thanks for watching! As you've noticed both ammonia and nitrites, you'll also notice nitrates soon. This is called the nitrogen cycle. Nitrates are to be monitored reguarly with pond test strips. We would recommend treating for nitrates as soon as they're present as these can become harmful for fish and get out of hand fast. You can use our product Nitrate Klear to help safely remove all nitrates in ponds. This is a bacteria treatment that will digest the nitrates found in ponds. We recommend leaving it 2-3 days after using Algae Klear Xtra before using Nitrate Klear. Feel free to get in touch with us if you have any further enquiries, you can email us on info@envii.co.uk. Thanks, Ash Envii

    Also adding that an episod of rain will tend to fertilize your pond, as drops of water gets nitrogen and phosphate from the atmosphere and that is what essentially helps fertilize soils, turning anything green in your pond, but again as this video points out, Bacteria is key to getting rid of it.
