First of all you shouldn't have taken on the dog (and presumably got paid for your services) from owners who first physically abused it. Secondly, anything you have accomplished in this video could be done by any proper instinctive affinity owner. You caused the problem lady and you are continuing the problem. The problem of misunderstanding the needs of your dog and the mechanisms of the dog. Having him scared to disobey you - like on the table - is masking one set of problems by imposing another set of problems on him.

Sad to watch. I didn’t see one moment of genuine happiness or contentment in this Standard P’s behavior once. Poodles aren’t meant for strict obedience. They’re deep thinking, playful, funny, loving and affectionate life companions. If you want a rigid, tight, serious dog get a different breed.

Poodles are very sensitive to corrections, despite their drive/capacity for working, exercising their minds, and communicating clearly with their owners. For my poodle, I only use a verbal marker to avert, prevent, or mark the undesired behavior and focus on building up the positive reinforcement. A shock collar really wasn't necessary and you can tell she isn't following these commands for her own enrichment but rather in fear of or to avoid punishment. I get that they have their application on certain individual dogs, at purely a vibration level with no electric shock, but in this case, she clearly is distressed, and continuing to train her in this manner is only going to make things worse.

One of the smartest dog breeds around with willingness to serve it's owner.. An E-collar is required? For a Poodle???? Basic training and house manners must have been a complete no show in that dog's home. Frustrating. Dog owners: Get your ass to a puppy training class. Do the work. It's not over cause the class is done! Keep house rules. Walk and play with your dog several times a day (Poodles are very active). Let him use that big brain of his! If you can't do that, don't get a dog. Get a stuffed animal. Now THAT is low maintenance!

Usually it is not a problem of dog, but of the owners or family where he/she lives. So training the dog is the easier part of it. Train people to behave is harder part. If you won´t tell them, what do they wrong and how to change it, the problems will come back sooner or later (and they will probably not ask you again, for the same help).

First of all, a good trainer doesn’t continue to give a cue (“down”) over and over again if the dog fails to do the behavior. Instead, you use a lure (treat) to put the dog in a down and praise. It will speed up the response to the cue. Second, no e-collar (he mentioned the dog needed discipline in the beginning) is warented. Using force free and positive methods create a more reliable dog, and strengthens the bond between handler and dog. Teaching impulse control with games (I like to use the flirt pole or a tug) is a great way to get your dog to listen with distractions. Learn canine body language and use it to your advantage in communication and throw out all the aversive tools and have actual fun teaching your dog. I have several decades of experience in behavior and veterinary medicine and haven’t found a dog yet that didn’t do wonderfully this way, including my own Belgian Malinois, Dobermans, Jack Russell Terriers, Corgis, dachunds, and Irish Wolfhound.

@@sabineseewolfchen1855 on all honesty, I almost agree. The thing is, most people with kids would truly use it inappropriately, at least from what I have observed where I live, plus, a child would just be able to take it off, causing us to work harder lol. The thing about an e-collar is they don't just shock the dog. I have used an e-collar before. If the dog is preconditioned to it, there is a small warning vibrate that can be administered, which is usually what I would use. A dog can be trained simply on that small vibrate, especially one as intelligent as a poodle.
