    I was there in 74 with a few other sailors from Ft. Myer. It was all good for most of the day. Everyone was enjoying themselves. I did notice a lot of drinking. As the day went on and after Ali did his speech, I noticed a change in the mood of the Blacks that were all around me. I told the other guys it was time to go. We got in a cab and headed back to the base. It turned out that I was right, because right after we left every white person became a target. We watched the violence on TV when we got in the barracks. I told everyone I knew not to go to this event in 1975 as I told them they were going to be attacked. It was even worse than in 1974. Human Kindness day was then forever cancelled as it was too violent.

      @thomasfoy136 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      All the naysayers in the media, and various white people made it out to be a bad day. Well I was there for the whole concert on the mall (and I and my Army buddy are white) saw NO violence or crime and we were right in the middle of the Mall and had a wonderful time. Took pictures at the White House after. I believe that a lot of people wanted to believe things would be terrible and blew anything they saw or heard totally out of proportion. There were over 100, 000 people there, it wasn't heaven, but it was wonderful. One of my favorite memories from the time I served in the Army Security Agency.

      @@thomasfoy136 Obviously you left too early and you did not see the ass whipping on the news. They canceled the event for a reason, and that reason was it was way too VIOLENT. I was there in 74. I wandered down to the Mall to clear my head after taking law school exams. I saw the big crowd there and heard the music. I didn't know what was going on. I passed a police car and walked about 100 feet towards the LIncoln Memorial when a young black kid, bless him, came up to me and warned me. But it was too late. Four or five blacks in their early to mid teens shoved me to the ground, kicked me and stole my wallet and my grandfather's 18 karat gold retirement watch. The next day when I went to the Park Police to report the crime I was told it had been open day on whitey. But the worst thing was that, although the police strongly advised against it, people and the press minimized what had happened. Just a few incidents. So they had it again and there was twice as much violence against whites. Google "Human Kindness Day" and read. You'll notice that the Washington Post article details the increased level of violence but nowhere states that it was all blacks against whites. Love me I'm a liberal. I understand where the anger against whites came from. Blacks inhabiting slums only a few blocks from the splendor of the Capitol and the Congressional office buildings. But it doesn't justify the violence or the cover up. I really believe that there is much less violence and hateful behavior now than there was then. But certain people like to play the race card.

    • @hatontuesday
      @hatontuesday 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with your assessment. As the one who made this TH-cam film and an employee of the non-profit organization that sponsored the event, I have direct insight. For the organization I was the instructor for the film program and helped organize the morning events. At the end of my shooting the film, I thought I would walk out in the crowd for an overall shot of the concert. Suddenly a half dozen black teenagers started chasing me, obviously eyeing my Super 8 camera. I ran and then suddenly someone in the crowd put out a leg to trip me. I went down and balled myself up on the ground protecting my camera. Hands and fists pummeled and pulled at me... but then suddenly it stopped. I looked up and there was this large black man in his mid thirties standing there. He had stopped the attack. He walked me to my car. I couldn't thank him enough and gave him my backstage pass. It was a dark day for DC.

    I did not attend this event, but the Washington Post's account confirms that many violent incidents took place. (How does stabbing someone in the eye honor Steve Wonder?) It also made clear that the event had a covert agenda: to rally support for Barbara Sizemore, superintendent of the D.C. schools. The school board was in the midst of the interminable process of firing her. Did she think she could hold out until the next election? What's Frank Shaffer-Corona doing these days?

    This video is not at all reflective of what this event devolved into. I was there. It started out cool enough, but there was a lot of violence and, sad to say, if you were white, you didn't have a chance. Girls had their blouses ripped open, were slapped and punched, and had their purses stolen. Guys had their wallets stolen, usually followed by a punch in the face. There were roving bands of black youths who kept running through the crowd, 20-30 at a time, and if you didn't run, you were trampled. There were stabbings, fires, vandalism, countless assaults. One guy was stabbed in the eye with an ice pick and lost his eye. It was terrifying. Stevie Wonder pleaded for calm and peace, but he was ignored by the troublemakers. I don't know why the guy who posted this video doesn't make clear how things really were, because he knows. There's not a lot posted about this event on the internet, but Google it and you'll see the truth from people who were there. thebuskersblog.typepad.com/the_buskers_blog/2005/05/human_kindness_.html

      I was there in 74. Not very many white people there, but I thought I was good as it was "Human kindness day" and no one was going to give me any problems. It went well in the beginning, no hassles, but I noticed most people were getting drunk. I experienced two tramplings, very strange. I was a bit in the back sitting on the grass, then I could hear a loud rumble. The noise came closer and closer and then I saw people suddenly stand up in front of me then a wave of black people few in all directions, over me and to the side. Later on I heard that same noise and knew what was coming. I started yelling " Don't get up, don't get up", but no one listened, then here came the second wave of black people flying all over the place in the trampling. One guy on a bike got wiped out. Then Ali came up to the stage. I wanted to see him so I weaseled my way to the front and watched him describe how he was going to kick George Foreman's ass. He described how he was going to do, as he said he was going to wear him out with his dancing around. He beat Foreman just like he said he would. Prior to that Ali did a lot of preaching, telling people how to be good. I saw the Pointer Sisters, but they did not do too many songs. I think they left early at that point as the crowd was now drunk. I looked around and saw nothing but drunk people and decided it would be a good idea to leave a bit early. I hailed a cab and took it to my barracks at Ft. Myer then I told a few people where I just came from. They had a concerned look on their faces as right after I left every white person became a target of theft and beatings. It was on the news. They told me how lucky I was. It was a good thing I got out of there. I did not go the next year as I feared for my safety and told others not to go as Human kindness day was too violent. The violence was even worse in 75 with white people being stabbed and robbed. One guy was stabbed in the eye. After that, Human Kindness day was forever canceled as it was too violent.

      I was there for the entire event, a Northern Virginia Catholic High School senior just short of my 18th Birthday. I was drinking Bourbon and Coke all day long and my experience, as a snow-white Irish kid, could not have been more different. Close to the stage, where my girlfriend and I were (Blonde hair, blue eyes), it was a very mellow and supportive environment, although we were certainly in the minority as white kids. I had a lovely time, the music was great, and a made a few new friends, including a lifetime friend in one of those "black youths" by the name of - if you can believe it - Toasty. While there certainly was some trouble on the fringes of the event, in large part everything I saw (and a 6'4" i see a lot) was peaceful, friendly, and yes, marked by kindness. The whole "roving bands of black youths" was a narrative perpetrated by the media trying to drive a wedge between cultures.

Drum to keep warm but we realized that we were out of place but we just hung out for a while and got high whit some logos that took the edge off of the intensity for a while then we made it back to our spot to relax When a big crowd started running toward us I thought we were going to get stampeded so I ran came back And it happened again s we heard that some one got stabbed and someone got there purse stolen

    @daveglasson Thanks Dave for the piano playing... and thanks to the ex-Bonzos for continuing to inspire the non-Bonzos of the world.
