PORT KEMBLA, NSW, AUSTRALIA - Marr Contracting has secured the heavy lifting contract on BlueScope's AU$1.15 billion No. 6 Blast (6BF) Furnace Reline Project at Port Kembla Steelworks (PKSW). Announced in August 2023, the 6BF project aims to secure steelmaking capacity in the Illawarra region beyond 2026.
BlueScope’s initiative includes significant plant upgrades and environmental improvements that will enable PKSW to maintain production while at the same time investing in lower emissions steelmaking technologies. Marr’s innovative solution employing a 330-tonne capacity M2480D tower crane, provides the heavy lift capacity required with the additional benefits of a compact footprint and extensive reach. As an alternative to using a 600-tonne crawler crane, the single crane solution helps to minimise risk to critical path and disruption to plant operations during the reline process.
Marr's Managing Director, Simon Marr, emphasised the benefits of early engagement with the BlueScope team in developing a craneage solution that will reduce project complexity and risk. PKSW Project Director, Justin Reed, praised Marr's ability to challenge their traditional thinking and the crane's game-changing capabilities, likening it to a 'sky-hook' that could deliver significant lifting capacity lift at any point on the plant.
The 6BF is due to be recommissioned in mid-2026.
