Full length demonstration of axe carving a spoon blank from maple wood 🪵🪓
This is a complete demonstration of how I carve a spoon blank from a half round of maple wood. I use two axes for the carving, one is rather blunt, I use this one for removing most of the bulk material, and the other is kept quite sharp, this one I use for the more precise carving of the spoon shape. The spoon template was drawn by hand and it’s quite rough and uneven as I am a bit out of practice. But I typically refine by hand anyway as I carve and change up the design as I go. There is a special appearance by my @TormekSharpening machine and my @SilkyEurope folding handsaw.

A Simple Way to Map a Basket Weave Design for Kolrosing
มุมมอง 7K4 ปีที่แล้ว
This is the simple method I use to map out a basket weave design for kolrosing. Kolrosing is the art of decorating wood using the sharp tip of a knive to seperate the wooden fibers. You then oil and rub a pigment into the design so that it will show up better. I am mapping it out on paper to show the process, and this technique can be used on wooden surfaces big and small. This was the first ko...
Making a Ferro Rod Handle: Part 5 - Final Touches: Oiling, Kolrosing, Epoxy, Assembly, and Demo
มุมมอง 3524 ปีที่แล้ว
This is the final video in this handle making series, it has been greatly sped up in most parts while still giving you the ability to see exactly how I do the steps. In this video I will show how I kolrose the totem head and handle, which I then give a coat of tung oil. I then set the ferro rod into the handle with some epoxy and let it set. I then assemble all of the parts and let it dry for a...
Making a Ferro Rod Handle: Part 4 - Totem Carving
มุมมอง 3194 ปีที่แล้ว
This is part 4/5 of my handle making series showing how I carve a wooden totem which is to be used as the lanyard bead/toggle. I love to carve these little totems as some of you already know. It is a family tradition of mine that I am carrying on in my own way. All you need to carve your own totem like this, is a scrap of wood and a carving knife. Thanks for checking out my work and remember to...
Making a Ferro Rod Handle: Part 3 - Sloyd Knife Work
มุมมอง 2554 ปีที่แล้ว
This is part 3/5 of my ferro rod handle making series. In this video I smooth out the axe marks from the previous videos using my sloyd knife, clean up the facets on the octagonal handle, and complete the carving process. I also drill the hole for the lanyard. The techniques shown in these videos can be used for all kinds of handles and wood carving. Music in this video is by Ulvesang, check ou...
Making a Ferro Rod Handle: Part 2 - Establishing Facets, Final Axe Work
มุมมอง 2404 ปีที่แล้ว
This is part 2 of a 5 part series detailing how I made a handle for a ferro rod, also known as fire steel. Which is a tool used to start fires. In part one, we prepped the blank to get it down to size, and drilled a hole for the rod. In this video I will be doing further shaping with the axe and establishing the facets, getting it ready for the knife work. The music in this video is by Danish a...
Making a Ferro Rod Handle: Part 1 - Initial Handle Shaping
มุมมอง 5104 ปีที่แล้ว
This is part 1 of a 5 part series detailing how I made a handle for a ferro rod, also known as fire steel. Which is a fun little tool used to start fires. In this video, I will show how I take the initial wooden blank and shape it into a rough handle. I then drill a hole which will later be filled with epoxy to hold the ferro rod itself. The song for the intro and outro music is called Embrace ...

Axe Carving an Eating Spoon Blank from Canadian Sugar Maple Wood
Wow!!!!!!! Excellent demo thanks, easy to understand and follow. Have subscribed and will binge watch all your videos now😂
Exactly what I was looking for, many thanks! Stop making my spoons look shit tho 😂
Hi, can you tell me if your wood is green or dry? I really like maple but can only get dry maple wood in my country, could you achieve that using dry wood? Thanks..
Its that kolrosing pen from the company named Pinewoods?
Great video, love to see more!
Someday soon! Thank you for your comment!
This was fantastic!
Although 3 years ago, I'm guessing that you are still out there somewhere 🤔. You use finely ground coffee for pigment, but, do you use jar coffee granuals crushed or is it filter coffee powder fresh or used ??. Hope you can help me out. Cheers Les.
I am still alive! I have been busy with family but I will be back someday soon. I use regular canned coffee, pre crushed and pre used.
I like a gently sloping shoulder where the bowl meets the handle of the spoon, myself...
Looks absolutely brilliant 👏, great pattern too, looks like it could try the patient 's of a saint to do. What is your colouring medium ? Coffee grounds or tea bag grouts ?? Very impressive piece of workmanship thanks for sharing. Les.
No - you're not drawing 1cm marks - you're drawing 1/2cm marks.
That was the first thing I thought as well, otherwise a very helpful video!
Try a final polish with abrasive wood polish like Yorkshire Grit. That should remove any unwanted staining from around the actual kolrosing without damaging the kolrosing.
I have a set of the tiniest micro-screwdrivers you EVER saw. Cost me almost diddly at the local Chinese shop. I sanded the tips into blades. The narrowest is about 1mm wide. They kolrose like a DREAM. The trick is to slide the 'blade' in at an angle. That cuts across the fibre and minimizes slippage. Goes in like butter and the narrowest tip takes the most minute and sharp curve. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. Oh, and to make the wood softer? Spray your wood with a 50/50 solution of 91% alcohol and water.

This is a great instructional video! The best so far. Everything is clear and easy to follow. Thank you!
Great job bro! Thank you so much for this.
If you could keep the work within the camera frame I would watch more of your channel.
Hello, thank you so much for this very informative and inspiring video!! I can't wait to make some more spoons so I can try it out. I've already drawn a few different patterns on paper and am excited to try it out on wood! I also appreciate your spoons...really nice. Just a bit of feedback: the focus issue (as you know), that was a drag; for a good chunk of time there was a glare on the handle so even if it was focused, we couldn't really see it very well; and lastly I would suggest that when you hold the spoon up to the camera for a closer look, you hold it still rather than moving it back and forth. I hope you hear all this feedback as really just me saying, "I really enjoy looking at your work!!" Thanks again!
Thank you! You explain very well! Cheers 👍
I cannot thank you enough for this short, detailed, clear, and concise example on how to design a basket weave. Thank you.
This video and your detailed instructions are excellent help for me. I will treasure it for sure as I journey in my spoon carving. Thank you so much Carlos. Blessings from the Philippines 🇵🇭
Thank you so much Carlos for sharing this video and your skills. I learned a lot. I am excited to apply the insights and principles you shared. The finishing and burnishing of the project is interesting. Blessings to you from the Philippines 🇵🇭
thanks, great and simple explanation
This is good stuff. You look like you may come from the Adam Hawker school of spoon carving... oop... and also a bit of Barn, too, if I had to guess. Eh? 🙂👍👍
You got it with Hawker - I learned kolrosing after discovering his work so my style of kolrosing is heavily influenced by him - he is the master and I can only hope to be half as good someday!
@@9HomeWorlds Same here. I have one or two shorts with my spoons making an appearance... one with kolrosed spoons that's easy to spot... when you have a couple seconds, if you fancy taking a peek, I'm always keen for some feedback. I don't really know any other spoon carvers, in real life. hah
That's very nice work, man. 👍👍 Both the kolrosing and the spoon. Have you ever tried plunging the point of your blade straight in, producing a wedge shaped end to the line, where one line meets a perpendicular line? This can create a very dynamic effect, when kolrosing woven patterns. If you're interested, I can make a quick video of some of the spoons where I've used this technique.
Excellent work
Thanks I like😊 good job 52:21
Great tutorial.
Gorgeous ❤
so i cant wash the spoon without taking the dirt out
In my experience they last many years of heavy use and frequent washing and the designs are still bold and visible. I even have several with designs in the bowls and they are still very much visible after lots of use. It’s like a wooden tattoo
Wow 😮
Ooh, exciting to see you back
Good to be carving again
💛💛
Looks amazing
A rather important note, tung oil is food safe (and very durable) once oxidized. But during the oxidization (15-30 days, depending on how many layers) it is actually toxic. Edit, please please do your research before using oils, especially if you're planning in putting it in your mouth
Never sharpen the inside, you sharpen the actual bevel cutting edge on the outside of the knife, it’s a single edge tool
Never day never Jimmy. The advice I’m sharing is in large part from the blacksmiths who make these hooks. The outside of the bevel is polished by the blacksmith, if you sharpen it too much on the outside bevel you risk changing the edge geometry.
I'm an 87 yr old grandmother can you explain "jus the tip"
Brilliant🎉
Nice!
Watched your tutorial and you really explained the process of Kolrosing in easy to understand detail. Purchased the tool fron Valley Forge designed by Dell Stubes and going to try some designs on Opinel #8 pocket knives. Starting simple at first and hopefully progress. Thanks for a great tutorial video.
Whats a good knife to get, please?
Called a chevron !!!
But…when you say you are excited you actually sound very calm and relaxed. 😂 nice video.
Bonjour très bon travail du grand art merci
It’s been awhile, hope you have something in the works!
oat - Canadian? Good vid!
Great tutorial! Thanks from Norway.
I loved watching this! Shame about the focus sometimes but it’s all good, I really enjoy the relaxed style ‘ops I dropped my spoon’ 😅 Now I need to buy a kolrosing-knife and come up with a makers mark 🧐🧐🧐 Big thanks for the inspiration and tutorial
I really like the mountain design in the kilrosing
Thank you. Your presentation was very helpf.
If you will take a heat gun to your straps and heat that compound you scrap it right off
