My Transit agency (TriMet) got a single order of RTS. 74 1982 GMC RTS-03s, replacement started with the 2200 series D40LFs in 1999 and finished with the 2500 series 2000-01 D40LFs. Some of the units were sent to Cherriots (Salem, OR) which ran quite a few of RTS at one point. Those RTSs were replaced by Orion VIIs and Gillig Low Floors. C-Tran in Vancouver, WA got some RTS-04s. Which those RTS Buses were replaced by Gillig Phantoms. TriMet, C-Tran, and Cherriots stopped buying RTS in favor of Flxible Metros (For TriMet), Gillig Phantoms (C-Tran but later TriMet followed buying 3 orders of Phantoms), and Orion Is (for a single order by Cherriots, followed by 2 El Dorado EZ-Riders orders then some orders of Orion VIIs). The RTS did sell some units with a few Transit Agencies in the PNW but the Gillig Phantom was more successful up here.

This is absolutely amazing! Here’s a “fanmade” timeline of these cars! Had the third Avenue elevated been preserved and rebuilt and expanded to handle the longer and stronger IRT Steel cars. Built by Budd in the years of 1967-1968. As the MTA was rebuilding the 3rd Avenue line and building a new connection to the Lexington Avenue line on 3rd Avenue 138th Street allowing for the 8 train to run as the second Lexington Avenue local to Brooklyn bridge city hall. To prepare for this connection the MTA requested an order of 250 R39 cars. These trains were to be identical to the R38 fleet but smaller in size and width due to the shorter length of IRT stations. Budd had successfully built these trains and they first entered service on the 8 train on 1968 replacing the aging R12s that dominated the line. These trains were the first stainless steel trains to be built for the IRT. Rebuilt and refurbished by General Electric in 1988-1989. During their lifespan they mainly operated exclusively on the 6 and 8 trains the Lexington Avenue local routes but also on rare occasions operated on the 4 and 5 trains Lexington Avenue express routes and on even extremely rare occasions on the three 7th Avenue routes the 1/9 2 and 3 trains. Eventually they were beginning to age and decay and so in the early 2000s to mid 2000s they were retired and replaced by the R142s and R142As (in this alternative timeline around 100 to 200 more R142As numbered 1001-1100 and 8001-8100 are built to managed this additional fleet replacement making a total of 700 to 800 R142As by Kawasaki)the last R39 set operated on a farewell trip on the 8 train in 2005. Most were reefed however a few cars were preserved by the transit museum and run in fan trips.
