Man, i wanna cry hearing James say he was in a fetal position after that scene. It definitely sounds like he was reliving something that happened to him. That's a trauma response.

If you know, you know... Personally, I love this scene.. It's probably one of the most realistic moments in the whole series. Excellent direction, writing and acting. - When you have first hand knowledge of the type of fusional love and passion some couples experience... scenes like this and songs like "I love the way you lie" have such a bitter sweetness that matures like fine wine. Not just because you truly understand what binary star merges and explosions feel like... but because you know that some people will never ever be capable of understanding your experiences... or surviving their own. - Just another example of the iconic irony and tragic beauty of the human experience. <3

It's interesting that a female scriptwriter decided to turn her experience of forcing herself onto a man and being forcibly rejected - which she describes as "humiliating" - into a Buffy scene, which becomes a rape scene because the genders are reversed.

I see James Marsters as not just wise, but a visionary. So always enlightning to hear his take on things. As for the scene, I never liked it, not because of its disturbing content (depicting is not the same as condoning and can in some instances increase empathy for the victims), but simply because it seemed jarringly out of character for Spike, who at that point hadn't acted "soulless" for a very long time. Heck, at times he was the nicest of them. As I see it, he gained a soul when he fell in love with Buffy, because that was most definitely not just desire he felt for her, or showed her. Think of everything he did for her and Dawn. From about S5 onwards I'd say he was written as the classic "bad boy with a heart of gold". Post S4-Spike couldn't handle Buffy being in pain and would never have done this. It was contrived as all he**.

I really would like to hear what SMG had to say about the scene. As far as I know, nobody (James included) has ever really quoted her thoughts on the scene. It clearly disturbed James to have to perform such a scene as the attacker. I've always wondered if Sarah was less, equally, or even more uncomfortable than he was.

I was okay with the scene. It was disturbing, definitely, but it served the plot and it addressed the subject honestly. It wasn't about showing skin, it was about showing an ugly reality.

It's the one thing in Buffy I reject in my head canon. Never happened. And I physically can't look at those moments on screen either. Too traumatic. Aside from the ugliness, I also think it's a terrible mistake in the writing and doesn't fit at all. He's a moral f*ck up, yes, but this specific mistake doesn't fit. Honestly, he would have just given her a back rub and seduced her again!

You have to put yourself in the actors' shoes before you ask them to do what you want them to do.

James Marsters was so affected by the bathroom scene that he had it placed in his contract that he would NEVER do rape scenes. To this day, he seems to have difficulty talking about the scene. That really says a lot about him...
