Sound & String

I'm a guitar nerd with a specific obsession for electric guitars. I'm interested in discovering what makes a guitar feel and sound it's best. Some instruments just need small tweaks, some need much more. Join me as I hoard guitars in search of tonal bliss.
Vintage Gibson Les Paul Junior vs. Epiphone SG Junior: Is the Gibson Really Worth It?
In this video, we compare two iconic SG Juniors: the Epiphone Yungblud SG Junior and a 1962 Gibson Les Paul Junior. While similar, these guitar differ in many ways you should know about when deciding if it's worth spending the extra money on a Gibson or even a vintage Gibson. Watch as we compare the tone, feel, and price of these two examples of what has become a legend.
In this comparison video, we break down the 1962 Gibson Les Paul Junior, one of the earliest versions of the SG Junior, and compare it with the modern Epiphone SG Junior, a more affordable alternative. We’ll cover key features like the P90 pickups and build quality and, most importantly, explore how these guitars stack up in terms of tone. Whether you're considering a vintage investment or a more budget-friendly option, this video will help you decide which is best for you.

Is Montypresso the Magic Touch for Laurel and Pao Ferro?
Just got the Epiphany SG Junior and its great guitar for the money. Mine has some weight to it, which I prefer. I had a 2021 Gibson SG Junior and I swear it weighed like 4.5lbs haha. Too light for me.
Buckethead uses v4
I have the Epi Yungblud SG Junior, and for the price, it's unbelievable. Definitely recommended.
Gibson does make a standard usa SGJr. With p90 and one my dad got 2019-2022 is not a nice guitar. Sure it's looks nice as it's brand new but there's a reason the original owner sold it, it's a dog leg. But Gibson has for sure made ab standard usa SG junior since 2019 and still makes it.
First SG junior's always a b**** too. Keep in tune
They are both quality guitars, honesty the newer guitars are made well with cnc machines
I have 3 SG Jrs. While I don't have a vintage Gibson Jr, I have a 2018 Banner series Gibson Jr. The first new Jr. they made since the 2011 which was not historically accurate. Prior to 2011 there was a late 90s re-issue based on the late 60s batwing version. The 2018 Banner guitar is the first accurate remake of the early 60s Jr. I also have the new EPI Yungblud Jr. It's a fine guitar for the money. Especially since it comes with a nice case at a very affordable price. It holds its own against the Gibson. But the 3rd is my best. It's actually a kit guitar from Precision Guitar Kits. It was assembled and finished at their factory (so technically not a full on DIY kit). It has a Lollar P90 and a Tone Pros bridge and an ebony fretboard. The finish is lacquer like the Gibson. Amazing guitar. I agree that the poly finish on the Epi gives it a little more snap and maybe a little less bass response. But once it's plugged in it's hard to notice. The feel of lacquer is definitely luxurious compared to poly. But in the end I'd take all 3 of these onstage any day of the week and use them interchangeably. I don't even feel a need to replace the pickup in the Epi.
Zero difference.. ive had them all.. i have guitars worth 7k and i play my new epiphone flying V more than anything.. its under 1k far below
We can change most everything on a guitar, except the finish. Unless we go custom shop, we are stuck with poly finishes that are near impossible to get off, and they come in every color you can imagine. There is a reason why Gibson never changed their finish, when they realized what poly did to the sound of their guitars. Fender went all in by using poly on their "Professional line" of American guitars, with the claim that the finish doesn't matter. After 40 years, most people believe that lie, having never really owned a nitro finished guitar. But some of us were there, and we remember what a good strat was like. I guess their motto now is - "Always leave them wanting more"
Sure but Epiphone makes the faded series guitar still. I've got a Les Paul tradproIV gold top and it's a killer guitar ! Rings out nice and bright just like a Gibson and the pickups are killers !
Epiphone has Stept it up . Good Stuff.
Doesn’t matter what you buy if you can’t play
I have just about had m ' all lol ... just keep the onee ya really love....I have a American Tele and I have a Epiphone Flying V and love it ..a few mods like better tuners and i purchased a Seymour Duncan for bridge position , although the stock pup is really growing on me...so time will tell..? I will say that I am really impressed with the 500 k potentiometers and the shielding is really good on it 👍
One will blow the other out when you want to sell it.
Yeah same thing when he buys it so whats the difference. I dont buy guitars to sell them. Only way id buy used is if its a great price. Otherwise I buy new. Pretty sure the newer generations of kids wont care less about old guitars. And the market will reflect that.
@ not much experience in this topic eh? A Gibson will only depreciate a little at first and then basically hold its value. I bought a 15 year old custom for $3500. It will always be this valuable If not more in the long run. An Epiphone will end up in a pawn shop for a few hundred dollars. I don’t buy to sell either but why not buy to have something valuable if you need to sell or trade? Not to mention the difference between a new and used Epiphone is not enough to justify buying used. I saved $1500 buying my Custom over new. People here are always trying to justify their purchase of cheap guitars when we all know they want the real one. It’s okay if you can’t afford a Gibson. Just stop pretending like you don’t want one.
I can walk into any Guitar Center and buy any guitar I want, but still play Mexican Fenders and cheaper acoustics bozo @@bhosterman
With your playing ability you should definitely get the Epiphone.
That wasn't necessary.
thanks for making this awesome review. I LOVE the white epiphone junior, because it's impossible to find anything that looks like that that doesn't cost a few thousand bucks. But man, that Gibson sounds like it's almost breathing when you play it.
I want to like the Epiphone as much as the Gibson, but they're just not on the same level
Absolutely fantastic have a great day also I subscribed to the channel also Tuesday January 14th is my friend birthday
Happy birthday!
Maybe play something besides bar chords, drop the distortion at one point to hear the clean sides of them both. Just a suggestion
Feel free to check out the full video (linked on the short) to see a wider variety of tones and playing on both guitars.
He’s playing bar powerchords, not even bar chords.
Epiphones are very good guitars, I have two..and when I die my grandneices will wish they were Gibsons
They both sound great, but the Gibson had something extra. What it is, i dont know.
If you wrap the Gibson completely in duct tape, they will sound about the same, although the Epiphone is likely to be the better built instrument.
@jeffmckinnon5842 I guess I haven't played enough Epiphones to confirm that they are better built. Im not knocking Epi's. They are pretty great. There just aren't many around my neck of the woods to try out.
Extra cost
@garretazonsa Well, yes because the US pays its people more than West Tiwan ( China).
You could buy a Mexican Strat, an Epiphone anything and a Mexican Tele or 1 Gibson.
Buy a vintage strat it'll be a work horse😅😅
Anyone have this and the Pitchfork+ and comment how they fair to each other? I got the PF+ but it’s not as smooth as the Whammy sounds. Also kind of “digitals” a little even on single notes
I'm wondering if the Edge used one of these in the intro on U2 - Even Better Than The Real Thing from the Achtung Baby album.
I'm sure I read that's how he gets that sound, definitely sounds like it
yeah, seems to be a Whammy
The Edge used the OG WH-1 Whammy Pedal.
was not expecting the here comes your man demo for this pedal lmaoo
Alesis multi mix 8 mixers are fantastic to play guitar threw. Your guitar comes out in great stereo on the number 4 reverb. Also vocals come threw great. These are the old mixers ?
The ammoon octa pedal was so good they took it off the market? PERFECT TRACKING. They were only $50 new. They want $200 bucks used now. But they worth it if you can even find one for sale. Also the m-vave mini universe reverb is fantastic for only $25 and you can get them.
$200 seems a bit much, looks like the highest those have sold for is about $85 on reverb
@@Sound_String Yea but mine one sounds great buster.
Whammy 1 and the 4 were the best ones… the cat in the blender sound is what you want
Totally, would love to try out one of the first gen ones, doesn't seem like they sound any different than the 4s though
@@Sound_String. They do. The OG WH-1 is what Johnny Greenwood, Edge, Tom Morello etc, all used.
I remember being disappointed with the sound of the reissues, but I haven’t paid much attention since v4, so I will have to try out the v5 (the Bass version, too) sometime. The v5 seems good (though rather different to the OG).
Dimebag used a Whammy for years on a lot of albums
Was just gonna say this. I think Dimebag is a more famous user of the Red-Pedal.
@@mkhdnimg The Whammy is on Vulgar Display and On, I remember the video clinic when he said he got one too. they came out in 89. I have the V4, its not polyphonic but its more a weird melody machine for me. I use a fuckton of weird pedals. But yeah globally Pantera and Dime werre huge, 2 million Russians in 91 with Metallica huge.... Rage was good but not sure how globally appealing US politics being rapped about is. The only band to get rap and Metal to mix right sans Anthrax and Public Enemy- Bring the Noise. ihate that Nu Metal is seeing revival, I was Gigging with Hardcore, Early MetalCore and Mathcore bands when that shit was popular, I liked the first Korn Album but heard about them through Thrasher Magazine first and then Headbangers Ball. Took a few years for Mainstream kids to get it. By that time I had already gigged with Madball as my first paid gig at 15 in 94
I have thought about getting one of these pedals rather than using a floyd rose tremelo system to do dive bombs and such that you hear a lot in 80's hard rock. Don't think I have found one video on here yet with someone actually using the pedal and doing dive bombs 🤔
I don't think many folks are using them for that Even having one of these on my board, if I wanted to do dive bomb type things I wold get a guitar with a floyd on it the feeling and sound of the strings slacking and coming back to tension is part of that to me
Try a Boss PS6, the guitarist of Code Orange has a PS6 on her board, I would use it for gliding octave up, but saw her using it to dive down with her hardtail guitar. A Whammy isn't going to replace the things a Good Floyd 1500/Hot Rod can do, especially flutter and riding harmonics
RAGTMs use of the whammy is great but noting beats the melodic way David Gimoure use it on Marooned. That is just butifull.
The Bass Whammy from the 90s looked like the Whammy II. It had buttons to scroll through the modes instead of a knob.
Yeah I've seen those I could have sworn they had made a bass whammy in the 4th gen, looked just like it but it was that same blue color
Digitch scrolling was a Bitch, I had a Digitech Legend II you could use the footpedal to scroll or punch numbers in but without it,,,, a lot of scrolling.
@@Sound_String. Pretty sure they didn’t do a reissue Bass Whammy, until what you’re calling the v5. You could be thinking of the Digitech XP-200 Modulator, which was blue … ? Or the Whammy II, which was like the OG Bass Whammy, but black. Also, it’s only the Mandela Effect, when the mis-recollection/delusion is widespread/en masse.
Great presentation.
Much appreciated
why everyone hating 😂😂 bro went pretty hard
I'm a simple man. I see a video about a white explorer, I'm clicking on the video lol. Always nice to see others enjoy a white explorer as much as I do. I picked up the white 70s explorer a few years ago Loved it! Just got the new 80's White explorer, which is a dream guitar, obviously due to James Hetfield. Great video!
The 80s ones look nice to, but I'm kind of partial to the classic look with the pickguard (I'd still rock one tho)
@@Sound_String Can't go wrong with either! I may get some white knobs for my 70's. Those looked so good on yours
Bruce kulick of KISS played one in the early nineties non makeup kiss days
The video Too Much Time on My Hands by Styx. Tommy Shaw is playing a white Gibson Explorer in that
Heck yeah, I'll have to revisit that video
I own a 93 custom shop in heritage cherry. Owned it since 97. Got it for 700 at GC Boston. I'm a bigger guy so it fits me better lol. I like the way the neck sits forward. Plus it plays and sounds incredible. Sounds killer through either of my Marshall stacks.
I feel like that's a pretty solid deal even back then They are way more comfortable than they would seem
Very cool guitar 👍 I'm planning on doing a tele. I've done a couple strats... most recently 24 3/4 scale length and active EMGs
24.75 scale length on a tele or strat is a cool touch, I've played a few and it's a cool differentiation
The seventies Telecaster Custom also has the toggle switch up in that position.
Correct, but with the pickguard covering much more of the body. I dig the traditional tele pickguard/plate with the switch on the upper bout, wish it was more common
I love my telecaster! I have a used baja tele that someone swapped the neck for a stock mexican standard neck!?! Guess they didnt like the fat fifties V neck and the cool original logo but I got it cheep cheep! Like the budgie! Hahaha and that flat pole bridge pickup roars like a wildebeest. Cool video dude. Cheers from the UK!
I've heard good things about the bajas. That V neck would have been cool, but a deal's a deal!
...... The guitar is awesome!!....You? Not so much.
Well, thanks for watching anyway!
I own a 2000 Gibson gothic and a 83. I also own 99 prelawsuit ESP. I love explorers. But plying them? I play a les Paul every day. I switch between a axcess, and 2 standards with 50s necks- a dark cherry burst and blueberry. I also heavily use an esp mh1000 in that mix and I play 30 mins to 2 hours daily. I don’t think explorers are the ultimate rock guitar though. That will be strat or SG then Les Paul. As for who made the explorer cool- white and black explorers was all Hetfield. And that was a solution when his V broke.
I certainly wouldn't say you're wrong for playing a les paul, there's a reason(s) they're such a popular instrument
I have the 59/custom hybrid in my MIM Strat, love it!
It's a great, versatile pickup
Cheap Trick played a lot of Explorers, Scorps, Edge, Hettfield, and Hagar.
Good points on all accounts
Those pickups do sound sweet. I have a Explorer Warmoth build in the pipeline. I was gonna go Burstbucker but will consider this Duncan set.
A lot of good duncan options
@@Sound_String have you tried the 59/custom hybrid? Thoughts?
@@dbrown6451 As a matter of fact, I have. I have on in the bridge of my parts tele --> th-cam.com/video/LTRByCDrCUY/w-d-xo.html
Scorpions (jabs) are the white explorer benchmark.
Only a bonehead would remove grovers.
great looking guitar- wanted one for a while just like that. thanks and great find! also like ur upgrades
Thanks!
I'm a casual guitarist at best but seeing a room full of equipment like this from some random guy with 73 subs is insane. The amount of knowledge that the most unassuming people have will always blow my mind.
Haha, I've got a very cool friend with a cool studio Thanks for checking out the video
I have an ‘82 E2 Explorer in tobacco burst and it rules.
I haven't played one personally, but those seem super cool. Does yours have binding?
I have the same guitar except it is an '81...bought it new back then and gigged many years with it....great guitar but heavy MF'r!
@@Sound_String they have bound body but not the neck.
