Chaos review of the ic-232
No 1 of a series I will probably throw together at some point
The reason it's Japanese only is because there were no repeaters allowed at that time.. so no repeater shift, no tone burst and no CTCSS either.. just like the FT-290 has no repeater shift as that was Japanese market only. The FT-290R does have repeater shift and tone burst and that's what the R stands for. They did make a 232 version for European market I think is a 252.

After a sale by my friend James a radio was returned due to not turning on. This is usually caused by a couple of problems. Not reading the manual, and the plugging the control cable from the radio into the mic socket on the head unit. This head unit has two sockets, one bigger than the other. Mic goes on the right side bigger socket. and the control cable goes in the smaller socket on the left...

Normally I pass any radios in need of resurrection to the experts to sort out. But in this case I attempted to repair a FRG 7000 which was given me minus some important parts. I recently acquired a scrap one on a well known auction site and went to work. I am delighted to say it all paid off.

@M0MBN not one of my finest no. I only had a short time to do the vid before the owner came to collect it.

just found your channel from qrz, really enjoying this combination of content. I work in a port as an engineer and i'm fascinated with the ships that come in and out and that i occasionally get to spend time on. Thanks for the content
Thanks for that and subscribing. I will try and put some more ship related stuff up too.
Shortcut: When inputting a band frequency, you can input one numeral at a time. Or, on the right side of input screen, you can simply pop in the band name directly. For instance, press the 20 button, to mean 20 meters. Saves you several clicks snd maybe an input error. Just pop in the band #.
Great setup there and Ahoy from San Diego Ca via Salt Lake city. I live close to the coast and monitor marine frequencies through my Baofeng UV-5r. I am thinking about something more permanent like a base station setup like the one you have. I am also a new subscriber.
Good explanation on tuning up, and nice to see someone dipping the plate during process, especially on loading Seen so many others increasing loading and plate without dipping plate All the best 73’s G4TYL
I wanted to buy one but now I will not! I'm shocked! Thank you very much for this video you helped me a lot!
Well i eventually got around to fitting the board to my FT847. Works OK but the level of RF received is quite low on HF.
I just got terrible feedback on 70cms when transmitting on 2m in full duplex satellite mode. I'm working on some way of shielding the board.
@@Nick-M0NMC did using centre core of RG174 not work?
No. That's why I removed it. I was thinking of insulating the board and wrapping it in copper slug tape. It will be like a mini Faraday box. Then putting miniature ferrite beads on the positive and coax leads to block any stray RF.

@@Nick-M0NMC , *_Thank's_* ...
Just got one and cleaned it up a bit, works wonderful, the front face panel is very brittle after 45 years, care must be used , great receiver...
Mine is 5khz off. Nothing I have done can fix it. I am at a loss on that.
Can u post the link where you purchased the mini1300?
I got mine from China on Ebay. I'm not sure where you are located, if I bought one from a UK seller they are £100 more expensive. Look on ebay. There are loads for sale.
Amazon was my choice. And I’m GLAD I went with them! Reason being. RETURNS NEEDED! Apparently, the QC at the Mini1300 factory has turned to poop. 1) First one came. The on/off button got stuck in the ON position. I opened it. Easy enough. 8 philips screws. Bam💥Open. Inside, I discovered that the on/off button is in a weird config, where it’s mounted sideways, and only held in place by the quality of the 2-3 solder points to the PCB. That would be fine, except that the thing is constructed so that there is nothing under the switch to hold it or keep it in place. When you push down, if you get the sense it moved, thst’s because it probably DID in fact move. Normally the switch is backed by the PCB. Here, the switch is held in place only by the solder. There is nothing to cancel out the sheering force of your finger pressing down. Only air! Extremely poor design there. So, not wanting to *break* the thing, I just buckled it all back up before it turned into Humpty-Dumpty. Amazon was great. Didn’t eveb need to speak to someone in a foreign language. Just a few clicks, and a new one was on the way to me, even before the busted one was reboxed to go back. 2) Day or two later, unit #2 arrived. Looked great! But, I had a time getting it to turn on. 5-6 double clicks before it would fire up. But, then it’d die out. Over and over. So I left it charging overnight. Next day, same thing. After this scene going on and on, I initiated the return. My mistake was getting their chat gpt involved. The person made it a big convoluted process taking 40 minutes. I did get them to agree to UPS picking it up from me. Rather than me dropping it off at the UPS Store. They would not send me a return label. Said the UPS driver would affix one. Ah! but the rub comes that they would not issue the UPS label, nor a refund - nor send a new one until AFTER the busted #2 was received by then. The return of my $186.00 would come later. Being in a bad spot due to my radio out of commussion until I could diagnose my newly high VSWR readings. So, I opted to pop for another purchase now, and not wait a week or more with the return to be completed. So, #3 is now on it’s way to supposedly arrive today. Hoping and praying that “The third Is The Charm”. To be seen… Glad I went with Amazon, despite. If I did e-bay, or Alibaba, Lord only knows what the outcomes woulda been.
I know this is a stupid question. Do I just hook up the coax coming from my antenna and tune it and then when I hook my antenna back up to my radio it's all good? I do I need to figure out how to get my radio in line as well
you can't connect it in line with the transceiver
Mine came with 3 dummy loads and I don't know how to tell which one is the 50ohm load. Any advice? Thanks
I'll need to check this when I home. Watch this space
I wish I had looked up your video sooner! The Calibration should do the trick. Checked a couple of antennas that looked like they were about 1.3:1 to 1.5:1 range on the Mini 1300, and 1.01:1 to 1.05:1 on the SWR meter with the radio. After I just ran through the calibration, I bet it will look MUCH better on the Mini 1300.
Hi Nick, M0BOC with the UNUNS and Baluns.
Hi buddy
I've subscribed back
The forward facing speaker suits my conditions, unfortunately the r1000 Kenwood a forward facing one was an optional extra and is now worth almost as much as a radio
I just won the auction for one here in Australia. I got one for $390 including the manual and in very good condition. I also bought a Kenwood R1000 for $400aud
Nice Video!👍👍
У меня такой же, классно все принимает. Украина.
Can you tune the al800 telescopic antenna?
Probably by adjusting length. But it will detune as soon as you move it somewhere else
I have my one installed as per your first video and I have the same issues on RS-44 etc.... hearing my self and it makes a lot of noise on the SDR-screen. I am wondering if you fixed the problem. Would be nice to see what you didand the position of the board. Thanks. Martin PD1MV
Hi. To be honest I haven't looked at it since. Seeing as you ask I my have another go. I was intending to place the pcb in a little faraday box and use semi rigid coax to attach the IF tap. I'll have to find the board and then try again. Watch this space
Can this be connected whilst using antenna ?
No.
Can this be connected whilst using antenna ?
It is used to check an antennas resonance. If you mean connecting in linecwith a Transceiver like a tuner or meter the answer is no.
What adapter do I need for this ? And how do I know what dummy load is what as there is no markings on them ?
multimeter bud
6:06 am thank you for doing a video on this unit I was seriously considering getting one of these units and I believe now since I watch this video I will I will probably order one soon thank you very much
They are definitely worth it. Just do the calibration when you get it. I have a video on that too. Unfortunately both videos were made when I was starting out so production is not great.
What’s your McDonald’s order when you go saltash maccies?
I guess you saw the back of the car ? Lol
I like you videos, have you ever done a video on how to set up Grid Tracker for the new ham?
I have had a couple of requests for stuff like that. I'll get on it as soon as possible. Hit notifications and you'll know when its up.
Hello, I bought the same, I have the same noise problem. Do you think there is a solution to eliminate parasites?
Unfortunately no. It is a terrible unit. You'll need to replace it.
I can’t believe the hate you give this unit. It does things far above what it was designed for. It holds my shack door open even if the a/c is on. I’ve used it for a coaster for my coffee cup. It holds the cats treat bowl on the shack bench to keep Nibbles off the high dollar equipment. And you say it is also a power supply? The uses are truly endless.
Great response lol. I have to say it's very useful as a paperweight
Have you reported this to trading standards? Looks like something they should look into on safety grounds.
Nope. I'll leave that to others.
Thanks for your video.... I have a Mini1300 being shipped. Question, please: I assume you have to calibrate like any other NanoVNA?
Yes you do need to calibrate it to get accurate readings. I did another video on it. Check it out

Hi, thanks for your detailed instruction video ! I have learned a lot from it ! As far as I see my settings are all correct on both sides, but my QSO-s in WSJT-X are not going over to HRD. The band activity is well displayed in HRD as you show in your setup. What am I missing here ?? My laptop has no Ethernet connection btw.
new video on the way
Just stumbled upon this vid. Thanks. I've just got wind of a used one for £399 to replace an FRG-8800 I recenty sold. I might just go for it.
You won't be disappointed. It's a lovely receiver with very nice lines.
@@Nick-M0NMC Looks like I might have to buy the FM board separately as not included.
That will be hard to get
Saying that I rarely listen to anything on FM on that kind of radio. If it doesn't have FM. £399 is way overpriced. Mine went for £300 with FM.
@@Nick-M0NMC I was thinking as much. Never had cause to select FM on these bands. I may try and knock them down. Thanks.
Interesting HF transceivers there is a Sailor RE 2100 listed on an estate sale locally
Bear in mind the RE2100 is the remote head for the t2130 transmitter unit. On its own the RE2100 is useless. You also need the AT2110 external tuner unit. I am pretty sure that the 2000 series HF sets can't be modified for LSB either.
Hi pal, how do I get some info on the freq counter set up on ur FRG7 ? Could you provide some insigt on the circuitry coinnection you have used ? Tnx n 73
I'm sorry Stefano. It was like it when I bought it. I didn't do the modifications
I have the ft857d and was thinking about this for mobile use . Thanks :-)
Definitely a great mobile setup. If you get the ATAS 120 then you must ensure it has a very good earth on the cars bodywork. I will be doing a video on my installation soon.
Back Ground noises Sounded like you were trying to hang yourself!, LOL
Yep I know. I was called in to my mates radio shack to make this before the guy picked up the unit after repairs. I think I had an hour to make it, no time for prep lol
Só Mostrou, mas o que preciso são as configurações do HRD+GridTracker+WSJT-X.
I have been away from you tube for a while but I'll see what I can do regarding a video explaining the settings.
@@Nick-M0NMC Ok. Muito Obrigado (Thank you very much) PY5CV
Just got the frg-7700 and like it to...but the 7000 would be a blast to tune around on....more tweaking needed..and thats a good thing....
Mines working fine now, however its 5khz off frequency and I've been unable to solve that issue.
Got one of these boards for my FT847, going to use your tip to use coax for the RF feed.
I had problems with mine. It was causing RF feedback on 70cms when transmitting on 2m. I'm still working on some way of shielding it.
@@Nick-M0NMC thanks for that may have to look at using short piece of coax Centre for + feed is this a good idea?
Well the manufacturer recommends using plain wire so maybe thats where I went wrong. I'm away at the moment but its something I need to take a look at again.
@@Nick-M0NMC when they first started selling the board I think they recommended RG158 then changed it to thin wire. I don't have any RG158 but have a large quantity of RG174 so may use that.
Its worth a try. I think I used RG316. I'll keep you posted on the shielding attempt. I'll be using copper slug tap to make a mini faraday cage around the board. The RF problem only happened when I was using Satellite mode.
Did your Mini1300 come already pre-loaded with v1.04 or did you update the firmware yourself? Mine is arriving today and just preparing for any updates if I can find where to obtain the file.
Sorry Danny I just saw your message. I haven't updated the firmware on mine.
No probs mine came with v1.01 on it and didn't know whether to update or not, just don't fancy doing the HW calibration.
My saa-2n nano vna says to calibrate at each use, even though is has memory slots for saving calibrations. Have you read anything about the mini1300 needing to be calibrated before each use?
@@frankthetank3342 No mate, never seen that

Thanks for your video. Any idea how/where to update the firmware? My manual is mostly Chinese and my firmware is 1.01. 73
Sorry no. Mine is on the original firmware and works fine, so I left it
Have you had any luck on updating 1.01 version.
I haven't updated it. Didnt see the need as it works fine as is.
The production of this video made me feel like I was having a stroke.
It was very ad hoc as i only had a short time to make it in my mates shack before it was shipped back to its owner.
Wow didn't even know a 7000 exsited I want one , love my frg7 works great enjoy playing with it
It was a rescue job as it was in a real state when i got it.
I believe that the FM functionality was provided by a separate add-in board, which I don't have. You are right, they are great receivers - had mine for about thirty years, and I am now *trying* to get my son into amateur radio, by listening on this.
Its the best hobby thats for sure
i can't hear your voice, just hissing sound, I have to use closed caption
Very strange. No one else has reported this
@@Nick-M0NMC Audio on your video is only coming from right hand channel, if he is listening for some strange reason to just the left hand channel he is only going to get hiss. Like the review by the way.
I think it was because of the mic I was using. I will be remaking this video soon
