Upper Cherry 2021

We scored Upper Cherry Creek this June, the flow was alright, the crew was fantastic and the rapids kick butt. It's my first GoPro footy, so excuse me for the waterspouts on the lens. Also, the camera tricked me into thinking it was recording so I missed Cherry Bomb, the best rapid of the run. Enjoy!

Kayaking down run #66 in the New School Guidebook. A local classic creek run that follows Highway 299 less than one hour from the coast. Easy access and nonstop action characterize the run as well as a manky, shallow, woody, sieved out and loose riverbed. Locals favorite!

    low, clear beautiful water. the rapids had no names when we rafted it years ago, seems like it was one long rapid for miles. my brother would bail and i would row. no helmets no dry suits or wet suits, and no company.

    I miss Coach and Madman Miguel so much. How was I to know that 5 years later they would both be gone forever. This is a more sentimental video for me now than it was when I made it, and I'm so happy that I did. Hippie, you better stick around, and I'll try too.

    Eucalyptus north or eureka, Eureka, the Eel River bridges north of Rio Dell,... Awesome! Ukunom Creek... How the hell did you get your kayaks up there? Since you were there, you shoulda put Bluff Creek and the bridge at Orleans in the video. Thanks for posting this so many years ago so I can enjoy it today. 😂

      @@DanMenten I'm glad you saw the humor. New River is a great place. I've been going there for over 25 years. We usually stay at the sight a few miles up from Denny, right at the bridge. We'll also stay at Madonna. Our favorite spot is Indian Hole (called that by the locals). You probably know it as the Hand of God. Great swim hole. When I first got there it was about 30' deep. Now it's maybe 20. Anyway, awesome place. And thanks for sharing your trip!

  • @SleepyheadzMusic
    @SleepyheadzMusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Those of you talking shit about this spot....I haven't even surfed here, but after watching this video and seeing these guys get dragged for days wave after wave that, by my best estimates are triple overhead plus waves over boulder infested inside, I dare you to go try that and talk shit and say it's a mushy shitty wave. Those are powerful heavy waves. Just because they aren't barreling or walling up doesn't mean they won't kill you. You probably talk shit about Nazare too saying it's a mushy beach break. Mush is weak powerless surf, probably something you're use to. I bet you guys don't even paddle out once it gets overhead at your local beach break. This shit is what separates the men from the boys. You'd never be able to take a pounding like these guys and survive.

    • @bword6797
      @bword6797 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      True statement. I have surfed here. It is mushy but that makes it so you really have to get close to the white water to actually catch a wave. You really have to commit and if you miss it, for get it, the next wave will take you for a ride. I've been in the exact same place as these guys. It gets frustrating cause you think your in the spot but it just bounces you out the back so you have to get closer and closer. And don't even try riding your 6'6" "step up". That shit is a joke. Shut your mouth right now unless your packing an 8' + Just for paddle power. Your right though 90 percent of the WORLD SURFING POPULATION would not be able to get a wave at this place at this size... And it's not even doing its thing yet.

    • @tyson9419
      @tyson9419 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bword6797 I second that. Only surfed here a few times and people also have to realize the water is like 50° . Creepy boils, lots of water moving, and this is not a flattering angle to shoot from. These waves are at LEAST double overhead.

    • @DanMenten
      @DanMenten 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      When the Kibbie Ridge access was closed due to a landslide we started hiking in from Bourland Meadow. You miss the amazing "put-in slide" but catch all the other great rapids. The hike is half the distance, but harder and involves more off-trail route finding. I consider it a more fun approach but it also requires a longer shuttle and is logistically tougher. Make of that what you will...

    That is some smooth kayaking through stretches of N. Coast I’ve only read about in guidebooks including the New School. That NF Smith looks so legendarily beautiful. That first rapid on the SF Trinity with bouldered symmetry and difficult choice of line. And the Stuart Fork with waterfall coming in from the right. Off the charts, that’s some “disgustingly” beautiful scenery.
