    I don't understand the wounds on multiple units rule. The grunts don't have tough so wouldn't 4 wounds kill them all? Why does the last grunt suddenly get to withstand two wounds and have to roll a dice when the previous grunts each died at one wound? Hoping I can find an answer online somewhere but this video didn't do anything but restate the rule.

    Apart from the movement system this game has one major design flaw which is symptomatic to games of this author - its stats are extremely flat. This is exaggerated by the fact that extra ranks decrease the opponent's Defence, meaning that a cheap unit will be more numerous than an expensive one but will still be able to reliably hurt it. This means that elite units can't really act as elites, since the maximum of five combat dice will limit the amount of damage output. The fact that you can inflict extra hits by beating the opponent's Defence with 5+ or 10+ in excess of their Defence does little to mitigate this since the flat curve of units stats make such results very rare unless you have a truly monstrous unit. This sadly mirrors the mechanics of Frostgrave, where stats are flat and poor and good units both need to roll really high to inflict decisive results. All of these factors exacerbates the swinginess of the D10, meaning that like in Frostgrave, combat is to a large extent luck based rather than tactical and based on maneuvering good units to strike poor ones.

    Thanks for posting! I love your gnoll army. I also like the idea of trying a three way battle as I had considered that option, but then discarded. After hearing your thoughts, I think that might be a good idea, although I would be interested in creating a scenario that discourages players from playing like cowardly elves. I also enjoyed the quick recap. While length bat reps are engaging (warcorgi!) , I found the short format refreshing. Thanks again!

      Cheers! The Chaos Format really works, to discourage those Cowardly Elf tactics I think you could use the adverse weather conditions from the book. Glad you like the Gnolls, they are a force that I sort of forgot I had. So good to give them some table action. I think these short battle reports are the format I am going to go with from here on in, so again glad to hear they work!

    Common misconception with oathmark is units after combat counting as having activated. If you read the rules carefully it only applies to the active unit, which specifically is the unit that rolled activation dice last, which does not apply to the unit that was charged. This is intended to stop a unit from charging twice as without this you could do two move actions and hence two combats

    • @stonehorsegaming
      @stonehorsegaming ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure about that, reading the last part on page 24 it says: 'Finally, any unit engaged in combat during a turn is considered activated. Thus if a unit is attacked by another unit before it has a chance to activate, it does not get the chance to activate in that turn.'

    • @markwatson8714
      @markwatson8714 ปีที่แล้ว

      As Stonehorsegaming points out, that's not the case - not only is a unit which engaged in combat considered to have activated that turn, but a unit which moves into combat finishes it's turn as soon as the combat is over (P34 - "Once the round of combat concludes, the active unit is considered to have finished it's activation, even if it has actions remaining"). It's one of the reasons the winner of a round of combat needs to think through their pushback options carefully ...

    • @stonehorsegaming
      @stonehorsegaming ปีที่แล้ว

      The Pushback mechanic is a thing that on the surface may not seem like much, but it has a lot of utility and consideration.

    Thank You for the full model count on all your units! Really does add to the feel of grandeur to the game, rather than seeing terrain with a few minis moving about. I also have a bias towards the Invade mission and it’s usually my choice of scenario whenever my opponent asks me to choose which one I want to play. Feels very balanced when in comparison to the others in my opinion and its simplicity of just to cross over to the other side just adds to the urgency. For small 3x3 or 4x4, perhaps you might want to consider Dominate. You’ll usually end up with massive scrums in the centre and flankers giving advantages if planned or played properly. Would love to see more KoW Ambush Battle reports on your channel and I’m keeping my fingers crossed till the next one. Cheers!

    • @stonehorsegaming
      @stonehorsegaming ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers! Glad you liked it. Got to agree with how full units look compared to bits of terrain with the odd model here and there. I understand that for some the modelling is more the appeal than the game. Invade is one of those simple to play missions on the surface, but it has a bit of hidden depth, and helps stop people camping back. If I get to play Ambush again I'll see if my opponent will be up for Invade mission on a 6' by 4' board.

    • @stonehorsegaming
      @stonehorsegaming ปีที่แล้ว

      Just checked the video and the rules, you are correct, no rule for heroes to leave or join a unit during the game. I might have mistaken that part with something else. Heroes can be deployed with a unit as in the rules for Heroes. I think it could easily be house rules to allow heroes to both leave and join units during a game. Just count both as having activated.

      I haven't played Saga, so can't comment about that. It plays nothing like Dragon Rampant, the two games have a different aim. Dragon Rampant is a warband level, where as Oathmark is mass combat level. The only thing ide they have in common is activation rolls, however they approach thise in very different ways.

      @stonehorsegaming ปีที่แล้ว

      The Undead are mine, the Templars are a stunning force that my regular opponent uses a lot. I think the tech level also helps to keep I grounded, no crossbows, or black powder weapons. Agree on the Tolkienesque look of the official models.

  • @deepred6041
    @deepred6041 ปีที่แล้ว

    How does it compare to One Page Rules? And given the choice which of the 2 do you think you'd prefer to play

    • @stonehorsegaming
      @stonehorsegaming ปีที่แล้ว

      It is quite similar to Age of Fantasy Regiments, but with enough differences to make it more tactical. That said it has enough differences to make it stand out. The use of a D10 allows the game to have more flexibility with unit stat lines, the limit at 5 dice maximum, and commanders there to help form battle lines/activate multiple units, and the more grounded fantasy all cement this as a firm favourite, and one that I'd prefer to play... only just mind. If Oathmark is a 9, Age of Fantasy Regiments is a 8.5. Now that all said, I think Age of Fantasy Regiments does quicker play, and allows for more tinkering due to the unit creation rules, I think it is the perfect introduction game system.

    No game ever dies so long as there is one dedicated fan with two balanced forces and a friend to sit down at their kitchen table! As someone who got in and out of Hordes twice it’s bittersweet to see the trajectory of this game/company. Shout out to my old Pressganger Paul, wherever he is.

    • @stonehorsegaming

They get the usual Skeleton Warriors/Archers/spearmen, Revenants Warriors/Linebreakers/Cavalry/Chariots/characters, Ghouls, Wraiths, Catapults, Ballista, Vampires, Necromancers, Barrow Worm, and a unique thing called Corpse Fire. It is a nice list, with some interesting rules, Bows are at half damage against undead... due to the lack of internal organs to puncture.

    Ah someone else that has seen the whole picture and holds the same opinion. I do 3d print and frankly what came back from gencon should not be sold as a retail product, nothing against the sculpts. But it was plagued by year one 3d printing user errors, mainly around cleaning/curing. If I had the stl files my hobbyists 8k, would have done a better job. The other thing, you can mix resins and end up with a very durable "tabletop flexible" resins that retains all the detail. I use a 30/70 mix for spears and thin stuff to avoid breakage, most of the time I use a 20/80 mix because of cost.

    • @stonehorsegaming
      @stonehorsegaming ปีที่แล้ว

      I've got very little interest in 3D printing (from what I have seen it is a hobby in of itself), and even I could see the issues with the photos of the Gencon stuff that people have been posting online. For a games company that have been at this for 20 years, it is baffling to see them not go HIPS. Yes it is expensive to set up, but in order to make it in this market, companies need to invest in what the customers want.

      @@stonehorsegaming infinity completely replaced warmachine mk3, it had been the tag along with mk2. So with the morats being redone i am happy i have my old sculpts, not a fan of some of the new design choices on the morats. However even their new siocast morat tag, is absolutely beautiful on a technical and sculpt level and plays second fiddle to the marut and probot resculpts. They are all a much nicer products than the current mk4 examples from pp. What is worse is I am not a fan of siocast, the corvus belli siocast is definitely a step up from other siocast i have seen. so they know something in cb that most people don't. But the step away from metal and not going to hips (injection plastic) is disappointing. The photos were a bit much, the layer lines being visible is a failure in the cleaning process from what I had in hand not the printing. Basically it was dirty alcohol and most likely being rushed through the cleaning process. The real proof is in painting and what does the wash, dip and oil wash reveal about the print quality and in all fairness to PP on that front they passed well with the cygnar models i painted. But I also has to repair them because weapons broke on the painting table, pp did replace them, but seriously dude.

      @stonehorsegaming ปีที่แล้ว

      Infinity is a game that doesn't do anything for me, could be because I'm not a fan of anime. Rules wise it seemed a very tight set of rules when I looked at the books back in the early 10's. For me I preferred the Focus/Fury mechanics, just added something very interesting to the game. I haven't seen any Siocast stuff yet, I've backed something on Kickstarter that uses it, so will get to handle it soon enough hopefully. PP's customer service is great, but yeah...they really shouldn't be in a place where they have to send out replacement parts for things that broke during painting. In all honesty, I wouldn't be surprised if PP go under in a few years.

I am on the bench for at least a year with mk4, hopefully they will get their act together before I actually care to buy a model. In all honesty I don't see pp making it to 2030. Which is sad because mk2 was part of the best times I have had in gaming. I still have the local people around. But the cons and the late-night beer machine followed by hangover tourn, lol. Excellent vid. I never played MK1 but as Jonny said we played a LOT of MK2 and although I sold a lot of stuff I still have a sizeable trollkin army. I don't think mkiv is really even the same game from what I've heard, from prenmesuring (gone in mkiii) to freestrikes and facings it seems like they are making the game much "easier" that includes the dual attack rule that I also don't really like. Forgoing your big cannon arm attack because you are currently punching something makes sense to me. I think between less fun rules, worse sculpts, printed models we are just watching the death throes now.

      Cheers, indeed MKIV is not the same game, even down to how the forces are split with the new factions and models. I think dual attack works on metal behemoth like Warjacks, squishy things would be too caught up. PP have made too many bad decisions over the years, and now it is coming to bite them, retail priced 3D models... just a very odd direction to take.

    Me and Scruffy Crow got soo much play out of Warmachine Mk2 back in the day. It was such a unique game. They killed the game with MK3 in my opinion. Great to see you back mate keep the vids coming 😊

      MKIII added some great ideas, but also introduced what I think was the biggest mistake in the games history, Themes. It really was and is a unique system, one which I hope doesn't leave the gaming landscape. Cheers, great to be able to find the time to make some videos!

      @@stonehorsegaming Yup, Themes was a HUGE misstep: Here you go, if you want, you can choose a theme and get free models in your force! They made it seem like it was optional, but if you didn't choose a theme you were severely hampering yourself. The new army system is WAY better, for a multitude of reasons. The first is that you either build that army, or you don't. No snake oil here. Secondly, it improves the potential design of each force, and allows them to play with smaller faction ideas.

      @@kaibe5241 Themes also strangled player creativity, it funneled what you could take in your list, sometimes it is nice to play around with model collections, and not go for the default tried and tested list. Been playing with the new lists, so far they seem nice. I do worry that it might mean that I can not use my stuff, due to not having certain Warcasters/Warlocks that my Warbeasts/Warjacks, units, and solos are behind.

    Are you gonna give the game a chance and play a game or two?

      Most certainly, the Legacy format is one that I'll try out. Not too keen on the new models design so will pass on them.

    Nothing about a campaign. I think for now, I'll stick with Oathmark to have a campaign but the solo play looks appealing. Thanks.

      Can't recall if there is or isn't a set of campaign rules in the full rule. I do know that OPR release a lot of additional content for their game, so there may be a set if campaign rules on their website. I do recall seeing a narrative scenario type thing for the game. Oathmark has a fantastic set of campaign rules. Really can not fault you for choosing that.

    The base sizes are the same as for Warmaster. I believe people wanting to play another game with their already existing armies are the target audience for this ruleset.

    • @stonehorsegaming

      I thought that, but the Warmaster based are rectangular, and the game seems to favour square bases. The rules do have a section on how to play with rectangular bases, so it is possible.

      They really are wonderful books, the lore, the art, oh and the rules are nice as well! Empire Vs Orcs is a classic match up.

    My buddy and I decided that a single unit cannot claim 2 objectives at once, we choose. What is your rule?

    • @stonehorsegaming
      @stonehorsegaming 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well they can claim one objective, then move onto another in a later turn. If no enemy unit claims the first objective. Both objectives are still yours. Units don't have to hang around on the objectives, which does help.
