Matterhorn Peak Hike - Caught in a Thunderstorm
Our escape down the mountain captured on GoPro
The Matterhorn Peak is a jagged rock formation in the Eastern Sierra Nevada topping out at 12,300 feet in elevation. Our hike began at 5:45am at Twin Lakes California on Saturday August 5th. We reached the summit at 2:00pm, far later then we anticipated. Poor judgement got us caught in a severe thunderstorm at 11,000', requiring us to take shelter for an hour under a granite ledge atop a glacier. Wet, cold, and tired and with day light fading at 5pm, we were still hiding beneath the ledge. After the rate of lightning ground strikes subsided from about one per minute to one every 10min, we chose to take our chances and hike down the mountain as quickly as possible. Several lightning strikes on the peaks above us got our adrenaline pumping.

    Hello Frank, Really appreciate your tutorial. The fourth order aberration you mentioned in the video I assume you are referring to as the wavefront aberration right? and its derivative is the 3rd order seidel aberration. thanks!

    So, you know that double switchback at the beginning on Chaparral? I manage to clear that 25% of the time. Never though it was possible until my brother proved me wrong. Video doesn’t do it justice. It’s very steep. Track stand practice helped me a lot. Nice video and I love the data overlay!

    My husband is a tool and die maker.. 45 years. Not many real tool and die makers left. He started as a machinist and is a Supervisor now. Not a trade you can train in house. Not everybody has the math skills or the ability to see the finished product. Today's tool and die maker are really just technicians. Everything is CNC and more like assembly work. Or the flip side of that is repairs..which isn't really die making or tool making..its repairing.. a technician. My husband is totally up to date on current trends, programs and computer software but was doing it long before computers..drawing his own blueprints by hand. Math skills and the ability to see it..See lots of people who tried but didn't have it. America needs all we can get. Money is better than it was..still high stress though.

    when any company hires an employee then it is job of the employer to train their workers. It does not matter if you are one employee shop or multinational. The reason that there are die makers in US is because the big multinationals like your company moved all the manufacturing away from US and kill all the demand for the die makers. Come on Tim, admit it. You just don't want to pay American salary and put up with American labor laws and environmental laws while amassing incredible amount cash while selling your phones to American.

    Just as brief FYI it’s pronounced Leyets not Leets. You wouldn’t say Eezenhower (Eisenhower). When in the middle of a word, in German “ie” is phonetically a long E where as “ei” is a long I.

    i've been a tool and die maker for 21 years so i know what it was then, and what it is now. Most of the skilled workers quit the field because wages dropped while the cost of living continued to sky rocket. it really is that simple. tool and die is very VERY challenging work, both mentally and physically. When i first started in 1996 it was 1 man per 1 machine. Now I have 8 machines that I am responsible for, and my boss expects me to keep as many running at 1 time as I can. Aaaaand I also do all my own programming and pre-machining layouts. At some point you are putting in way more than you are getting back. And thats when workers quit.

    • @BurnsRubber
      @BurnsRubber 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm assuming you are referring to the spreadsheet calculator for the thin cook triplet. The equations here are in Excel formula. Analytic solutions for this lens system are possible using ABCD matrices or Gaussian reduction. The spreadsheet solution here is solved numerically. The intent here is to supply the user with this spreadsheet.

    Big business ceos like tim cook are the reason tool and die making is a dying trade in the US. Its all about their pocket and nothing else. The US manufactures much more complex tooling than any of the fixturing and dies used to manufacture apple products. He should have just stuck to the tax excuse and left US tool and die makers out of it. im sure there's lots of ignorant people that believe this two faced liar, but not everyone is an idiot

    • @fpvFlyingMonkey
      @fpvFlyingMonkey 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Brian Schott Yeah, I've been trying for YEARS to break into Tool and Die Making. I even bought a little cnc router so I can self teach CAM software (already good at CAD from my college degree) and machining skills (on a small scale with softer materials of course). I would LOVE to get training in this, but there's no way I can afford more college debt! Scary thing is, as CNC's and CAM software gets easier, more user friendly and more reliable companies want to have one machinist run 3+ machines... and they want to pay them less than before! Ugh...

    Even if he may be right about the future of mobile technology, I wish Apple would invest more in their desktops and Mobile devices, in that they should be more modular. I want to be able to upgrade my current Mac Pro just as I do now, as I would with a Mac Pro, years down the road.
