Welcome to Nicole's Garden! Sustainably growing Cut Flowers, Herbs and more in Eastern Canada, Zone 6.
Gardening on 1/3 acre with her husband and two young kids who love to help out. Learn tips and tricks on How to Grow Vegetables, Herbs and Cut Flowers from Seed, Cutting and Transplants.
We run a Market Garden selling Herbs and Cut Flowers in our local area! Our growing space is roughly 20x40 feet or no-till permanent beds and one small 6x9 foot greenhouse made from repurposed windows.
We practice no-till gardening, regenerative practices and organic methods. Gardening sustainably and low-waste is very important to us and we share all our methods on how to do this on a smaller to medium scale.
Fun fact: I'm a trained pianist with a degree in Classical Performance and I teach 40 students during the school year.

Lovely set up. Are you interested in a growing community. Down home backyard gardening is looking for someone from zone 5 to showcase on his channel. I've joined several of his contests. I think you'd make a great contribution. I'm also in zone 5, Ontario but I'm not consistent enough to contribute. New subscriber. Awesome greenhouse!❤😊🇨🇦🙏👍
Possibly, I’ll look into it. Thanks!! We are technically zone 6 now but I tend to plan as if we are zone 5, just in case.
@@NicolesGardenNS he might still need someone from zone 6
Throw the piano out keep that beautiful plant
NO
my saffron has produced flower this year
Great!
@@NicolesGardenNS it's a painstakingly long wait for a single flower...my previous three attempts yielded no flower....have uploaded my video
What kind of piano? I’m also a teacher and have my monstera near a grand piano. She and the dogs and cat get a lot of musical stimulation
Hi! It’s an antique Heintzman (Canadian made) from the late 30’s but I have a newer upright in my studio that I use for teaching. The grand only gets ‘light’ use from me & my own kids. Christmas tunes and such ❤️❤️
I hope you transplanted the herbs you removed, no reason to waste seedlings
I plant only what I have the space for ✌️
your greenhouse setup and climate situation are basically identical to mine...i have kept a potted olive tree alive for years now over winter, as well as lavender and rosemary the past few seasons. last year i got a heated cable(meant for heated floors, under tile) and buried that, and set the aforementioned plants over that, then buried in wood mulch. using a thermostat, i had it set to keep the root balls about 40°F. i'm not sure how much the heater cable ever turned on; probably not much. it's only about 110 watts, so just like an old incandescent light bulb. heater cable was from Vevor; i had to play around with the wires a bit to get it to work off of my thermostat. cheers
Good tip, I’ve been wondering how well those cables work. Thanks! I might have to try them out this year.
Just found your channel. Loving all the good gardening info. You’ve inspired me to cut some of my lavender. Quick question what kind of soil did you use for your cuttings? Thanks so much.
Thank you! I usually use regular potting soil with some extra vermiculite mixed in (roughly 25% of soil volume)
Pumpkins can take a long time to colour up. Especially in the cold. I just put them inside a bright area.
Thanks, I will do that.
I'm still trying to clean up my yard and raised beds. Taking advantage of the nice weather. I can't wait to see all your plants in the spring 🌱🌼🪻💐🤗🥰🤗
It has been alarmingly warm, for sure. At least it makes fall cleanup a lot easier 👍
@NicolesGardenNS yes it does. Climate change is helping
Good for you getting everything prepped and in the ground! I just could not get myself to start cool season flower seeds indoors. Working outside in the heat really made me sluggish in the evening.
I must have started them on a rainy day 😜
So you don't wait for the cut ends to dry and can just pop them right into soil without sealing or anything like that? I'm so scared of the cut ends rotting!
Nope, I never have! I’ve probably cut it this way a dozen or so times now over the years.
Nice front deck. Why do many people say 'Awful' b4 describing something nice? My Dad uses that word alot too.
Thanks
You are very lucky to be able to plant tulips bulbs without any fencing of some sort, where I live Tremblant Quebec zone 4b we have very strong deer pressure...which limits my chance to have any flowered borders.. this year I will try to grow tulips from huge plastic flower pots and see if they survive our cold winter out here...this way I can move around these pots once the tulips puts on some growth to protect them from the deers
No, not lucky at all. These will have hoops, covers and additional fencing before they emerge in the spring. No sense doing it now, it will get torn up over winter.
Well done, Nicole! Lots of hard work, but worth it! You have a lovely new deck and the spring & summer blooms from those bulbs will be gorgeous! I too planted a mix of bulbs this weekend - Iris reticulata, muscari, daffodils, tulips, Dutch Iris, and Byzantine gladiolus. All planted together in one bed; hoping they provide a succession of color from February through May.
Thank you! That sounds like a really lovely mix, it will be gorgeous in the spring 🌷🌷🌷
Beautifful, Beautiful, Beautiful ! Now I'm going to copy your idea and do some very late planting around my new shed!
Thank you! And happy planting 😂😊
Lovely porch. Can't wait to see the bulbs in the spring 🌼🌱🌼🪻💐🤗🥰
Thank you! It should look fantastic, I can’t wait.
Execelente resultados
Gracias, thank you 😊
A few of mine ranunculus came back for 3 years now I planted it under my birch tree.a little bit protected.
Must be warmer where you are, they definitely don’t survive our winters here.
@@NicolesGardenNS probably but sometime we go down negative 30 to negative 35. I'm in zone 6b.just happy that it came back
Very pretty.
Thanks 💐
❤❤❤beautiful
Thank you!!
really enjoyed. new from Ontario, have moved to Kempsville in 2022. my garden and greenhouse are coming along. you are a great inspiration. and yes please more updates.
Thanks so much!
Do you trim your lavender back in the fall or spring. I save my Queen Lime Zinnias and cosmos seeds. Thanks for the video Nicole! Bonny, Ontario, Canada
I trim it in the fall. I find keeping it compact helps it keep it’s shape through winter.
Great video. Question, is there a video of the cool season crops you plant and have started in the greenhouse? Thanks again 😊
Hi! That’s on my filming list for this week, so watch for that one soon 😊🌱
Fantastic video! Can you save seeds from flowers after a freeze? I have lime green zinnias called Envy that I wanted to save seed but we just had our first freeze. Northwest Montana here. Thank you!😊
That depends, if they were pretty dry they may be ok but if they were wet probably not. Zinnias do sometimes self seed though, so I would take them anyway, can’t hurt to try!
Great video 👍. I'm getting seeds from my zinnias soon. I collected seeds from my perennial hibiscus so far. I have thousands of seeds from my petunias. I haven't done a video since last summer. Hopefully I'll make one soon of my seeds and cuttings. Have a great weekend and happy gardening. 🌷🌸🌹🌺🌻🌼🪻💐😊🤗🥰
That’s definitely a good start!
Tell me what seeds you are saving in your garden! Any seed saving questions I didn’t answer? Let me know here 😊🌺🌶️
Hello from NH! Excellent video. All my herbs are in large pots. I was going to put them in burlap bags with mulch around the roots. Do i need to do that or just leave as is? Thanks!
PS. We are not getting the very snowy winters, but you never know...
The snow is actually helpful, because it insulates well against large swings in temperatures. It also depends on how cold your winters get.
Thanks Nicole! I'm on the seacoast so I'm thinking we may be comparable to you. Only a few hours away. So I'll leave them in protected areas. Let's hope it's another mild one. Cheers!

Your baby jack pumpkins are camouflage for your calico cat! I really love your decorative pumpkins and may have to do a few of my own. Are you going to video any of your garden clean up? I love a good "tidying" video! Good luck at the market!
Hi, yes she does hide well 😂. And I do plan on some kind of cleanup video, so keep an eye out for that within a couple weeks for sure.
Great havest.
Thank you!
Hi Nicole, I really appreciate your videos! What was your experience growing Freesia? Did they end up blooming for you? I purchased some bulbs and will be planting them this fall to bloom indoors over winter. Pennsylvania 7a. Happy gardening!
Only a few of them did and it looked pretty pathetic in that giant pot. I didn’t keep the corms. The flowers themselves were lovely.
@@NicolesGardenNS thank you! And what of the fragrance? Can you liken it to any other scent?
Hey! I'm also in NS. This is so cool! Any tips on growing watermelons? I've tried melons and watermelons the last two years and they never pan out. I've grown a single cantaloupe, buuuut I stepped on it... :D
Oh no! They need lots of nutrition (good healthy soil), lots of regular water (deeply once a week is better than a little every day) and as much sun as possible.
❤❤
😊
Please give me those cuttings 🥲
I don’t think they’d survive being shipped 😂🌿

It is my first time on your channel and I have just subscribed. Your garden is so beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing. Keep up the good work. All the best on this journey.😊😊
Hello! Happy to have you here ☺️☺️
Where to get the plants
That depends on what country you are from. Bulbs don’t usually ship internationally, first make sure you have the correct growing conditions then start searching online for a local supplier.
Great natural and organic
Yep! Thanks 😊
Hi Nicole nice to see your garden for first time. It's very fruitful and beautiful. My kind of growing food with no financial input but get a lot of food. I grow from waste of good organic food. I started a orchard this way too keep uploading here is my subscription +like❤💪
Glad to have you here! 🥒🌿💐
What are you talking about zone six through 10 I need to know more about this
Growing zones map the average lowest-highest temperature of an area so that you know which plants will thrive and which ones won’t.
@@NicolesGardenNS thanks. Im on long island. Any idea the zone?
I bought saffron bulbs and they never came up
That’s too bad 😢
Watching from PEI. Interesting that you have had a wet summer, we have been extremely dry and hot this year. Plus side my pumpkins and squashs are producing like crazy. So are tomatoes and zucchini. Have you ever tried King of the North Bell Peppers? Growing them this year and they are healthy robust plants and quick to ripen. They are very prone to sun scald though.
I did grow King of the North last year, they were fantastic. I’ll grow them again for sure.
Watching from Vancouver Island. We lived in NS for 10 years so watching your garden is nostalgic.
That’s great to hear (I was born in Comox, lol 😁)
