The Truth About Building Your Own Website as a Small Business Owner | My Honest Experience
Is it a good idea to create a full fledge user facing ecommerce platform on Payload CMS? Or should I use something else along with Payload for this use case? I am confused how scaleable and maintainable it is to build user facing applications on Payload.
Personally, I would consider using Payload for this because of it's custom collection types and out of the box stripe integrations. It's also open source, so you don't have to pay to use the software. It may be tricky to implement some of the ecommerce features, like a checkout process, implementing variants, shipping/taxes etc. Alternatively I might also recommend using Shopify for something like this. If you need help deciding on what's best, don't be afrard to reach out! Thanks for your comment and good luck!
Thank you! Keep going

Came here for Payload :)
Appreciate the feedback! More payload content coming soon :)
Hello! I thought you were going to move away from Craft CMS and do Payload CMS content? Payload CMS v3 stable was released today.
Hey Mike, more Payload CMS content is coming soon! I am still doing some client work in Craft CMS. I've found it to be quite niche work and I really do think Craft is awesome, even though Payload is my preferred choice. I'm still passionate about craft and wanted to a comparison like this for a long time!
7:10 you need check Craft 5 because I think that's covered now.
Yes, I learned that matrix blocks are handled via entries in Craft 5 after I made this video: you are totally right. I think that is such a great update from Craft!

Thanks for the thoughts, but one thing I would mention is misleading. The ability to detach the CMS from the frontend is a feature; that's what headless means.
Yes, if I said somewhere in the video that's not the case, it should be corrected!
I'm considering using Payload CMS, which is heavily based on Next.js, however I'm not comfortable with how Next.js, unlike other frameworks, often relies on Vercel's infrastructure to solve key issues, including some proprietary configurations and optimizations that aren't well-documented or intended for public use (Vercel owns and maintains Next.js). I've heard that oftentimes the best, most performant solution is an infrastructure-based solution but because of this, self-hosting Next.js applications outside of Vercel can be challenging and a lot of the benefits that can be gained by using Next.js are the same things that make it hard to self-host Next.js. So it calls into question how practical it is to self-host Payload as a Next.js-based CMS on a VPS or custom infrastructure outside of Vercel. Especially for complex and multi-tiered applications that can't be simply thrown into a Docker container.
I have no idea what you are talking about but it sounds filthy to me. More please.
More coming every weekday! Feel free to subscribe! :)
Cool video brother, very insightful
Thank you for your feedback and for subscribing! Please let me know if there's any other content you'd like to see! Have a great day!
I just wanted to say that the company name is really cool! Also, I love Payload and Tailwind together. Combined with using v0 it speeds up work significantly.
I agree! I am also a very big fan of tailwind. I only just learned about v0 recently and have not had an opportunity to use it yet. Most of my work lately has been consulting or more complex back end work. I can't WAIT to try it out!
I was in a similar boat: was seeking the "perfect CMS for my clients". As much as I liked Directus, the ability to create hard-coded Collections in PayloadCMS, and then use & duplicate those across projects, is what ultimately sold it me 👍🏻 BTW: have you given Astro a try? It's become my new front-end framework. Some projects I deploy as SSG, and more recent ones are SSR with Payload. I've not been this excited about a CMS in a long long time!
@jjaimealeman That was one of the biggest selling points for me. Just between that and it being open source (making projects much more affordable for my clients VS Craft CMS's license) was enough to get me to change. Also, the local API for querying data in NextJS vs having to make HTTP requests.. I have not been either! I have not tried out Astro! I will check it out. What do you like about Astro over NextJS out of curiosity? I am definitely open to finding the best fit!
@@WestSideTechnologySolutions Astro by default does not ship any JavaScript to the client/browser (unless you specifically choose to). Result in smaller file size, faster delivery, etc. Has a feature they call "Islands" where you decide when/how a component should become "interactive". Doesn't include ANY javascript, but if you so wanted, you could integrate React, Vue, Svelte, etc. amother bunch of others. Their Discord community is full of some great people. ALways helpful. The dev team is always cranking out new features. 10/10 would recomend.
@@jjaimealeman Thank you so much for the great recommendation. I'd be really curious to investigate the performance difference. I am going to look at this tomorrow. Thanks again for your great insights!
I have been considering PayLoad. The main thing that dissuaded me from the current project that I am doing is that it looks like version 3.0 is in beta and not quite stable yet so I decided to wait until that is ready to fully test it out. I saw in one of your comments about Sanity which I have worked with before and it worked pretty well, but I don't really like their studio setup so much. Payload looks much better to work with. I actually went with Wix headless for the current project I am doing which I never even knew about until researching for this current project. It is pretty good. The nice thing about it is that you can tie into all of Wix's prebuilt functionality for e-commerce, booking system etc. , and they can take care of hosting the site also. I decided for Wix on this project because it is for a Brazilian company and Wix has really good pricing for Brazil due to their pricing parity which many companies don't offer. $8 USD per month (if in Brazil) you get hosting, 100GB CMS storage and all the functionality they have. The one downside I don't love is the API interaction with the actual Media component where you store media. I have not figured out an easy way to send, save and organize images with the api. It is easy to upload and organize media directly in their studio, but I would like better functionality to do so through the API. I will give Payload a shot though very soon as it seems very robust and customizable with decent pricing.
Sanity is the best
What do you like about Sanity?
Payload CMS is excellent and very flexible.
Totally agree! What do you like about it?
I tried both while evaluating stack for one of projects. Made same choice, using it ever since.
What ultimately made you make your decision? I am very curious to hear thoughts from someone who had the same decision to make!
@@WestSideTechnologySolutions I dismissed craft after it gave many errors on production hosting and fixing some gave even more (there were no errors in local development). As it was the best solution php could offer, I went to node to search alternatives and tried few. So ultimately I chose it because it had interface translations for admin panel (added couple weeks before I found it) and was easy to push local changes to production
@@virtual5754 I am surprised to hear about the production only errors... What a headache though! Sounds like some very fortunate timing though. Thank you for sharing!
Big fan of Payload. Using it with my team in my full time job now. If you need UI for your client to update client, go with Payload. Otherwise, go with Astro with content collection. You can use fully typed json or TS to manage your contents in version control.
Interesting, I am not familiar with Astro! I will definitely check it out! Thank you! I think its cool you use payload for your full time job. That's something I never got to do! Which CMS did you switch from? As you can see, I moved over from Craft CMS. I loved Craft, but payload is just such a better fit for me and much more affordable (open source vs license) for some of my customers!
@@WestSideTechnologySolutions We switched from our proprietary system and was looking at WordPress as an alternative among other SaaS CMSes like Sanity and Prismic. Payload gives the best flexibility with the least vendor lock in.
Totally agree with you! I've been using both on different projects. I'm currently upgrading a site to Payload 3.0 and it's awesome!
Informative video, brother. Look forward to your video about the meeting with the Payload team. I also recently switched to Payload 3.0 and am looking for anything on that topic since it's still in beta and I want a jump start.
Thank for your feedback! I did have the meeting with the payload team. Their office is about a 10 minute drive for me! I don't think I'll end up making a video on the topic, but it was cool to meet them and I hope I get to work with them as I get more invested into Payload's system. I am also patiently waiting for 3.0. I have some big plans! Thanks for your comment and please let me know if there are any other specific topics you'd like to see regarding payload, or anything in general! Have a great day!
