All landlocked countries are more expensive, Zambia, Rwanda, Malawi etc., Because they have to import oil from far.

I have done this twice but mine its from capetown to nairobi, I remember tukiishiwa na mafuta na pesa zambia and back then they didn't have visa or mastercard enabled atms there hiyo siku ndio unakumbuka you have an high commission, wee, long story short, we got the money from embassy which had to be sent to a relative of the embassy in nairobi then when she conformed she gave us dollars, we drove all the way to Nairobi with two heavy drinking pitstops, then after a week we sold the car, we were young and free, ata gari hatukukaa nayo 2wks since we bought it

That's a good vehicle for the trip...comfortable 👌. I have done more than 5 road trips crossing TZ using the same route to Zambia. Don't worry about the arrests, it was your 1st time. I have mastered the route and could even do 2days from Nairobi to Tunduma (TZ/ZM boarder). It's Babati, so you pronounced it right. Next i want to do Nairobi to South Africa....
