Alexa's Song (I Want To Be A Robot)
Thanks to my wife Deb for shooting the video and Jessica Doklovic for helping me make Alexa sing.
This song was written by an artificial intelligence. I know it sounds crazy but I promise that I am not making this up. I asked the AI to write a song about being an AI. I then asked it to write a second song from the perspective of a human talking to an AI. I merged the two sets of lyrics to form the final song (along with a tiny bit of word-smithing to make everything fit together neatly).
So if there was ever any doubt that robots will take over the world someday. I think we can place those doubts to rest. We're doomed.

Bills (Lunchmoney Lewis cover)
มุมมอง 8849 ปีที่แล้ว
"Bills" by Lunchmoney Lewis is my favorite song of 2015 so far. I couldn't resist covering it. The girls gave me a bit of help with the video. Thanks to Jonathan for help with the editing and Nate for loaning me the banjo! For more music, check out the bands that I'm in: www.sloesippers.com www.thejilters.com
The depth of RK47 capsule is crazy. That is apparent within 2 seconds of hearing a direct comparison.
Loved the sound after capsule replacement. Not a fan of post-circuit upgrade
Cool!
Thank you so much for this comparison- I've been considering the circuit kit, already swapped the capsule on my SP-1. I will say with both circuit and cap the acoustic initially does feel like some body drops off, but then you add it to the mix and it sits easier. Plus with being able to throw it into omni like... I donno pretty attractive alternative to the original $40 guts. "Vintage" is a good way to describe the difference though, so it's not hard to see it's not for everyone. But it is for meeeee
Mine has problems with phantom power below 40 volts
Haha love this! It's crazy how good GPT-3 is. Was all of it generated by GPT?
I would say 90% is exactly as it came out in order and un-edited. The rest was mostly editing to make the words fit rhythmically though I did add an embellishment or two.
So funny!
Hahaha great song Travis! I’m thinking of doing this mod with an MXL 990 that I haven’t used in like 10 years. BTW, this Patrick Roman from the mixing seminar with Rachel.
Bruh you got to play the same thing hard to tell the difference.
Hey, sorry to add a comment so late. I picked up a couple of these mics used, and I can not get the bottom to unscrew. I've had lots of similar mics (MXL, especially), and some have a threaded collar at the bottom, some don't, but once that's off, the lower "cone" of the body just unscrews as you show in this video. Not these, though. I've turned good and hard, and I can get just a slight movement, but then it feels like something is holding it in place. I don't see any set screws or anything, but I don't want to break or bend the body. Thanks!
Most of mine just unscrew but I think I may have one that required removing a nut around the XLR jack first. Have you solved it yet? If not, I'll take a look through my mics and see if anything jumps out at me.
@@UprightJoe Thanks for the reply. I looked before but didn't see anything else holding it on, but maybe it's hiding in there. I'll take another look.
@@SeanKerns Cool. I'll try to dig around in my mic collection and see if I have anything that doesn't unscrew tomorrow morning.
great video.
i'm about to do the MXL 990 mod with the board and rk47 capsule.
is it just me or adding the circuit made it sound worse? you're losing the low end and there's some kind of distortion... i can't put my finger on it but it sounds a lot better with just the capsule and not the capsule+board... could just be me though.....
"better" is subjective. But yeah, the circuit is a jfet-transformer coupled one, then it adds second order harmonics which could be good or bad depending your needs/taste. I like the characteristcs of the t-84 circuit for everything except bass in this test
Great comparison video Travis. It should encourage even someone with the most modest studio, that a well performed piece will sound fantastic with stock entry level microphones and a good mix. My old ears aren't what they used to be, but the RK47 capsule really improved frequencies on the low end. Also the complete conversion sounded better on the full mixes. Just my opinion.
Thanks man
Informative and very classy, thankyou (good song also). I liked the fullness on strummed guitar with just rk47 but full upgrade an all round bonus. thumbs up Travis.
On the fingerpicking part, definitely hearing less noise with the RK47 upgrade. The tonal difference however is extremely slight and very hard to hear. On the strummed guitar, the difference is much more pronounced. Both are good, and I'd say it's personal preference except for the RK47 being lower noise. Both sound good but the RK47 there definitely sounds smoother and fuller with less top end and a more filled out midrange and bass. I didn't like the circuit on any of the guitar stuff. Sounds too tinny to me. But on the bass I think the RK47 + the circuit upgrade sounded best. My personal favorite was the cardiod position on the RK47 and circuit upgrade on the upright bass stuff. That sounded great. The circuit seems to give some more high definition to the bass, which makes sense given the really low frequency of the instrument. On guitar it was just a little too much for me. On bass, perfect. *Overall,* I'd say my favorite was the RK47 standalone as an upgrade. Very tough call though, and honestly, all three sound good to me. But I will say the RK47 upgrade seemingly lowering the background noise definitely gives the mic a much more professional sound. The standard mic mix was good, but when I heard the RK47 mix it just sounded like it bumped it up a notch or two to professional quality. Maybe it has less noise because of the frequency range? Kind of like turning down a tone knob on a guitar. The hum/buzz is higher frequency and it lowers a bit dB wise when you back off on the high end. Perhaps that's what's happening with the RK47 in some sense. Either way it sounds great. Instrument selection and playing style seems to be very important here. If I could pick, I'd use the board + cap upgrade for bass, and either standard or just the cap upgrade for guitar. Vocals, I'd agree that I didn't hear as much of a difference, but would probably just go with the RK47 as it sounds like it has less buzz and noise to me.
Do you need to soldering gun to change the capsule ??
Yep. You'll need some sort of soldering gun or iron and some solder to change the capsule. I use one of these: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000AS28UC/ There are cheaper and more expensive soldering irons on the market. I think this one is a pretty good middle ground though. I've had it for a few years now and I'm still completely happy with it. I also bought some different tips from a Radio Shack that was going out of business near me. The tip that comes with it is ok but it's a little bit big for getting into tight spots on some circuit boards.
dude this song is awesome. i cant find it online. is it original?
Thanks! Yep. It's an original. I did end up recording it to test out the mics I was building/modding. You can find it here: th-cam.com/video/AFOYIL8awDc/w-d-xo.html I haven't published it to iTunes/Spotify/etc.
I love this song hahaha its great!
That was totally awesome, cuz! Love it!
Honestly for vocal difference is negligible. Thanks!
Prolly one of, if not THE best mic test videos I've seen. Thank you for posting such a great well thought out video.
The song is a fun listen too!
Outstanding. It has so much more presence through the lower midrange and midrange. The stock one isn't bad for $69 but wow, it's quite nice with the swapped capsule.
There’s some major interference coming in from somewhere
great video thx
Thank you Travis, that was a very, very good video. I have the Microphone-parts kit with the RK47 and Shoeps circuit (very happy with it) and I was really surprised at points at the full upgrade. From time to time I actually thought just the capsule upgrade alone was most complimentary to the particular instrument and track. Its almost as if the circuit upgrade added a form of subtle distortion that was good on most but not all tracks. That was an eye opener. I may recall something said about the "T" circuit adding some extra 1st or 2nd harmomic. Maybe that was what I was hearing. Excellent video. Thanks
RK-47 sounds tinny to me.
Very beautiful video.....Nice work man....It helped me a lot..
Thanks!
the most significant difference I can hear is the instruments. changing the capsule form stock to rk4 on the voice I couldn't hear any difference what so ever. it's only when the circuit board is replaced when I hear a vocal difference and honestly, I thought it kinda degraded the sound a bit.
I agree that I didn't hear as much difference on the voice. Guitar was very different on each version though.
cool, was it just the capsule you modded or caps too?
Just the capsule, no other changes (yet)
@@UprightJoe get the board... you're missing out on performance...
awesome sir
Stock sound ok, RK47 sounds beautiful old school style and full modified sounds new school and beautiful with a fuller sound(love the bass on this one). Thanks for this video
Well made video!
Thanks!
