Buying a boat and sailing to Alaska. Part 2: San Juan's to Desolation sound (Canada)
In May 2024 we drove up to Washington from California to shop around for a boat. Bought a 1977 Mercator offshore 30 to spend the summer sailing the inside passage to Alaska.

I love how he "worked on the diesel" by changing plugs and oil; then it stopped and he "got it running" by laughing at it or something. Off to Alaska! Wooooot!!
Great vid - love the authenticity 😎
@@robertgold2643 thanks!!
Every time i've been around point conception it was like a lake. Don't know how I was so lucky. San Simian is a beautiful Anchorage. I woke up with an amazing view of Hearst Castle.
@@Jim-ro5sl yeah nice! Really liked San Simian as well.
@@Zachmanpearl 🙂👍
higly recommend ajib pole for going so far downwind! Keeps the jib from flapping back onto itself.
@@kelseyirene7620 yeah I never ended up getting one with that boat, sometimes in light winds I'd use the boat hook!
Good job Zach!!
@@AmericanoVG thanks man!!
It's wonderful to see how enjoy the sailing.👏👏⛵⛵

Great video living the dream
@@DennisMacdonald-r7d Gracias.
I can NOT listen to your annoying grating voice, geezus.
Good luck with your trip! We made that trip last summer and it was amazing - all the way up to Glacier bay. Are you just getting started in September or is this video delayed a few months?
@@tjw8rc awesome! Yeah totally very delayed haha.
yer leaving NOW ?
@@schoon111 We left end of may.
@@Zachmanpearl whew !!
Happy sailing people you are, love to watch , greet from Holland.
@@ronaldliesting-p4f thank you very much! Do you sail in Holland?
I would suggest that you guys build a dodger. or else it will be a cold a very wet trip.
@@charleydahl2057 oh man yeah a dodger would of been great. Definitely on the project list for next spring.
You guys look so happy! All the best and fair winds!
@@Leonteplitsky thanks it's fun! 🙏🙏
Hope you can get your motor fixed. Safety first bro 🙏👋✅️✅️
@@MarkDerbyshiremoses yeah thanks! We were able to order a new starter.
@Zachmanpearl I'm an ex master instructor in the military, everything from rock climbing, navigation, chemical storage and transportation and chemicals warfare and many many other subjects, and the most important lesson or saying we teach all military people is " Is it There? Is it Secure? Does it work" then second " Check and test, check and test, check and test 3x"❤️👋✔️. Before we do anything in the military we check and test an item 3x. Test it fully and hard. Make sure you can use or operate it in the dark, important from emergencies. Once you've tested and item, like as important as a radio or small like a Rope, you then place it on your Boat or vehicle, you do 3 x tests, before you move off in your boat or vehicle, especially if working in the dark or hard 🌊 seas, is the item there! Where you can find it even in the dark! Is it Secure, ( attached to the boat 🚢 tied down in a locker, so it will not fall off at sea or fall on you at sea) finally Does it work!! No point taking broken stuff with you or dangerous stuff!! These 2 saying will save your or others lives. ❤️✅️👄is it there, is it Secure, does it work! ( do as you say it) then before your deployed to sea 🌊 or land, Check and test all items 3 times.✅️✅️ this life lesson will save you from a nightmare happening at sea in the dark and bad seas 🌊 ✨️
Incredible adventure. Congrats!
@@dfischer6993 thanks!!
What an adventure!! Great video!! (I’m an old schoolmate of your dad’s.) 😊 Nice boat.

@@paulcollins9197 very true
Bro were do you storage your padel board ? Nice video I’m about to buy a Catalina 25 next week 🙌 😊
@@JorgePenia92 Congrats they're awesome. I stored the paddle board in the cockpit lazarette. It had a pump that pumped the air out as well so it could roll pretty compact.
Where you at ? beautiful !
Glacier Bay, AK
Little tiny one 😂
Looks like a gobie
A caught one
Bull head
it's a seafish
Idk but maybe stop sitting there dangling him in NO water at all and suffocating poor lil dude or gal
How many of you want to be there right now?!
What engine are you using?
That was a 4 stroke tohatsu 8hp.
Hi! Do you have the route and places you stopped ? Living in china and planning a similar trip
I don't remember the exact route unfortunately :/ we generally set a distance/destination for the day then avoided hwys and that worked pretty well for seeing cool stuff off the beaten while getting where ya want to go. Have a fun trip!
This is literally my dream. Thanks for the inspiration mate
Do it!
I know a c25 can handle those conditions . I probably would not want to get caught in the ocean in any worsening conditions in one
No life jackets?
I have that same stove on my boat. I have all kinds of campstoves, and that one seems to burn everything, but i keep trying to love it, ha : ) Its great for when the recipe calls for "Blackened Fill-in-the-blank." Ps, why'd you sell the 25?
Yeah I like that little stove too. I sold it so I could get a more capable boat, or go on a different kind of adventure like a long distance bicycle ride, motorcycle etc.
Were those Orcas at 3:10 to 3:20? Those are some tall skinny dorsal fins! I'm not talking about possible pacific white-sided dolphins at 3:30 to 3:45, with their similar coloration but much smaller, and more swept back dorsal fins. Also what was up with the adrift kayak? seems a little far from land for it to be a scuba kayak. Did you retrieve it or leave it?
We think maybe risso dolphins? But could of been, they were quite far, but didn't seem very big or black from what I recall. Deff weren't common dolphins for sure.
@@Zachmanpearl Oh! Yeah could be. Ive never seen a Risso's Dolphin. at exactly 3:15 it looks like orca markings on the face, but that could be water spray. That Dorsal look really tall though. Looks like a great trip!
@@oaklandmax thanks!!
Looks like a great sail, i love sailing on cloudy days. So much easier on the eyes. I have a Catalina 22, upper Midwest now. Used to live in Pacifica, pre sailor. Would love to make that little loop you did there. You gonna get another boat, whats next bud?
Yeah was a pretty fun loop. Yes I will get a new boat! Still shopping haha
Nice Samson post!!!
Thankyou for sharing your life with us!!!
You kids would love the Catavina Boulder fields down baja way!!
Will have to check it out, going to Baja for a surf trip soon I think.
I hear san Janice has a surf break as well as Matechen bay south of San blas we were there exactly 50 years ago all jungle cabo had no inner harbor wild and free
Let's be honest she might has 9 pairs of shoes 👞 hidden somewhere
Smugglers Cove was nice!!
Thanks Dale!
Love your music!! Wang Chung away!!!
Always a good idea to learn to sail off anchor ⚓
San Simeon is a beautiful bay!!
What design is your sailboat?
It's a Catalina 25!
Great video
Try Baja your next passage = enjoy your vids ! sails up fins down ⛵
Thanks 🙏 good idea love Baja
Actually, sunfish aren't too bad at swimming. They float sideways on the surface to warm up because they don't have a swim bladder and dive very deep while eating. They look pathetic, like a shark bit them in half, but they are just warming up.
Ohhh that makes more sense, I saw so many during that trip all swimming the same way. Explains the name too.
Baby Skipjack tuna we call them
