I have talked to several dozen people at length about why they have left their faith groups. While there were occasional instances of offense or concerns over doctrine being preached (or the way the church was run), these were often secondary reasons. They are, however, useful excuses to use when talking with a pastor, member, or church leader. It is the reasons people who stay accept from those who depart. Think about that for a second because there is power in understanding it. There is almost always more to the story! The real reasons people leave can be much more complex, personal, and deeply difficult for believers staying in a faith tradition to understand. In short, those who leave often do not share the full details out of a concern that doing so will offend loved ones, make others unhappy, or even lead to others walking away. You may be surprised how often I have heard from those who have left express concern they didn't want to drag others away with them. They could see how that might be hurtful to them. It might damage a marriage, erode relationships with children, or impact their livelihoods or professions. My hope is that everyone who stays will take a moment to recognize how monumentally difficult it is to leave. It is emotionally draining. It may impact far more than just what they do on a Sunday afternoon. The big message: Do not try to understand it. Do not try to change their mind. Just listen, accept, and love unconditionally. Avoid saying: "Well, this sounds like your fault." "You wouldn't have left had you just done XYZ." "You'll be back." "The church is perfect, but the people aren't." < That does not show love, and may cause the person who has left to want to avoid you in the future.
