The Place at the Bridge is an innovative reimagining of some of Shakespeare’s sonnets performed in 2021 by stf (Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory). Set in Bristol, England, it explores the community’s relationship to the city and one another through the stories of five characters. In STF’s production, the poems speak not only to eternal themes of love, alienation and desire, but also address urgent questions about who we are and where we love.
Here, Laurie (Alexandra Wollacott) reconfigures one of Shakespeare’s most famous love poems as an ode to Bristol in a rare moment of sunshine. As the sonnet progresses, her naïve confidence in the city’s ‘eternal summer’ bubbles over with youthful exuberance, capturing her joy and love for her home city.
