Béla Fleck plays some Gershwin -- exquisitely!
Excerpted from Rick Beato's excellent 1/2/24 interview with Béla, a little George Gershwin on the five-string banjo. I hope neither of these highly accomplished gentlemen objects -- I just thought it would be good to have Béla's actual playing in their own videos. The entire interview is here: th-cam.com/video/_xNR2VHOzcY/w-d-xo.html

This was clipped from Rick Beato's excellent interview* with Julian, which was posted on June 15th, 2023. I hope neither of these generous and highly accomplished gentlemen object to my sharing this excerpt, moments of honest indecision and a single outright clam notwithstanding. * th-cam.com/video/49KwbU0hT3w/w-d-xo.html

"I'm Troubled," probably best known as a Doc Watson tune, as performed by Crooked Still on May 5th 2010
Thank you James for inviting us to your family reunion from the little ones in the backseat of a station wagon the bat and to the back of the thickets with the asian wife a storyteller an entertainer pure heartland I'm having OTR flashbacks James you describe the thin line between white trash and blue collar the highs and the lows you're amazing story teller thanks for bringing us along
Not for the uninitiated; Lage only rewards the closest listeners.
He ended that with a take on the way Bird and Diz used to open it.
The guitar needed to smoke a cig after this
His playing is poetry
is it ”Autumn Leaves“? I can name it as Autumn weed! lol
Phone call for Mr Petrucci ! I Found that guy who can reverse Time Signature LMAO on a serious note Julian is finding chords that i did not know existed on a guitar and I've been playing 20 years !
That's because players on that stratospheric level don't approach their music in terms of chords -- it's all about the lines and intervals that in the course of playing coincide with chords!
@editorjuno Just pure Genius 🫡🎸👍
satiraaaacal leaves
dead leaves
Pfft, Jazz. They just make it up as they go along, I can do that: "Do Do Do Do Do Do DOOOO," Marge: Homer thats just Mary Had a Little Lamb
abe lincoln’s first telecaster
Phenomenal playing
Absolute garbage! My cat could play better! ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... .....Not that I'm jealous or anything.
Me too. Love this guy's music!! Choctaw Bingo is awesome!
A few minutes into the video, I happen to glance at the title see the phrase "the late Ian MacLaglan on keys," and think, "Alright, I wonder who he was." And RIGHT THEN, that keyboard solo on "Chocktaw Bingo" starts--and thirty seconds later I'm just like, "WOW. Now I know."
Once again I say Julian is the best living guitarist today. Sheer brilliance on every level and it comes out as musical idea after musical idea. I hope I get to see him play in person one day.
He just played a whole week in NYC, two shows each night. It was stunning, truly.
i am on the verge of making an album about the last 4 years . this is a master class especially keeping songs stripped down .
Abraham Lincoln playing a Telecaster
he just played more notes than exist on all T Swift albums combined 😂
Do they count as a string quartet?
Honestly, one of the most original modern guitarists around
Dynamics so powerful that gave me ASMR
Get a bit of a buzz on and zone out in the dark with James McMurtry for 40 mins. Use a good pair of headphones or earbuds. I find it cathartic in spite of it being somewhat depressing. He says what others won’t.
The acoustic he s playing l think is his signature guitar by Lowden.
Still a monster on guitar!!
He is All Man ! Need to eyeball Live! 🏔💚🎸
what's this song about
Wow. Wow and Wow!
Dude looks like the exiled, bastard jazz son of Bruce Springsteen
The consensus is that he looks like a young Abraham Lincoln. 😎
Righteous
I see Ronnie!!!
Love it
Rock on out
🙏
That was insane! Lage is such a gift!
Not bad, but can he play "Louie, Louie"?🤭
Saw him twice in the last few years in solo gigs. He still has it all. So unbelievably creative & tasteful. We are so fortunate to live in a time when there are such musicians.
Can't stand his playing. He's not a jazz player. He's a hybrid of classical and country styles with a dash of creativity.
Not liking him is OK but saying he's not a jazz player is ridiculous
Dare i say, almost as good as Ted Greene !
I love most guitar playing, jazz, blues, flamenco, and rock. Matteo Mancuso takes my breath away. But this leaves me completely cold. It sounds like someone practising. Just my opinion
I didn't know Abraham Lincoln could play a Tele like that!
39:00 minutes
Sux. Boring. Zzzzzz...another white guy exploring a stupid old standard. YT recommendations is annoying.
Think he still has that hot girlfriend the one that had the kinda hit sing🤔
Beautiful!!
Abraham Lincoln is really good at guitar!
Hell Yeah, Ian 'Mac' McLaglan was in the Faces as well. Legend.
I hope someday somebody I think he is in a tuning I would like to know
It appears to be in drop D (capo 2, obviously), possibly with the high E also dropped -- not sure about that, though.
James Mcmurtery one badass songerand hellish guitar man he is a chicken pickin is absolutely killer also psycho lead is killer 😅😅😮
And this is technical proficiency of the highest level. Now he can focus on emotional expression without worrying about technical limits... I wish I was this great of a guitarist
I think one would have to listen to more than one off the cuff improv to issue that sort of advice. I for one don't believe he spends even second "worrying about technical limits" while engaged in what amounts to composition in real time, AKA "improvisation" -- but that's just as perceived from here, so YMMV.
He borrows from Scofield a lot.
