Ive never seen someone consume both the original content and the anime and miss the entire point of the show. Satoū was raised by a mentally unstable woman who viewed masochism and sex as 'love'. Satoū has NO idea what maternal love is and she also has no idea that being a mother is her fulfilment, not romantic love or sex. She has no idea that marriage is not the appropriate thing to do with Shio as once again, She has NO idea what maternal love it and only knows 'love' as one thing. Shio also has no idea about maternal love as her biological mother was both an abuser and abused. Satoū is not romantically inlove with Shio and vice versa. Satoū cares and nurtures Shio exactly how a mother does, Satoū never touches Shio inappropriately, Satoū never teaches Shio to be a romantic partner [not that she could because she doesnt know what that even is either]. The kiss on the lips is the most you have with your argument but that also falls apart when you realize that many parents and kids kiss each other on the lips. The entire show is a traumatized 16 year old girl finding fulfilment and comfort by being a maternal figure to a child who needed an actual family. The teacher is literally a paedophile and is there to show you that Satoū isnt what you think she is compared to the actual thing. I dont understand how you missed that at all... Satoū is even stated to be both aromantic due to her lack of romantic interest in anyone and also asexual due to her lack of interest in sex. You could argue that she has romantic interest in Shio, but romance still involves making out or romantic dinners etc. I see that you put a lot of effort into this video but its really unfortunate that you missed the point entirely of their relationship. Its basically a yandere mother and an abused child in desperate need of an actual mother. Taiyo is also ANOTHER character that exists to show you how Satoū is not a creep. Taiyo is abused and turns into a creep thirsting for Shio much how lolicons depend on cp to bascially do the same thing without facing the consequences of being a pedo. There are so many characters that are there literally to show you that Satoū is not a monster and you still missed the point. Im very disappointed but i also understand that a lack of research and understanding would be the reason why.

I think what bothers me the most about Mitsuboshi's character is that he could have been a great example of how unresolved sexual trauma can lead to the victim trying to seek extreme ways to cope with it- even if said ways are extremely disgusting and taboo. The fact that he was so traumatized by older women to the point he developed an attachment to a little girl instead is a very sad reality that happens far more commonly than people realize, and to some extent the show tries to portray that in a realistic way, but then along the way drops the ball because I can only presume the writer didn't trust the audience enough to take such a sad and unsavory reality seriously, so they try to make it comedic and over the top. It's really, really sad.

First off, absolutely amazing vid! I rly enjoyed the visuals with the mix of irl BGs and drawings! I watched HSl a few years ago, mostly because I saw the OP and thought it looked cool. I watched it right after Mawaru Penguindrum (also found that through the OP lol) and it def set my expectations for HSL too high. Personally I found that eps 1-9 of HSL were full of decently intriguing mystery and suspense (like 5 or 6/10) but the last 3 episodes were so horrendous and unsatisfying (overall show is prolly only like a 4 or 5/10 for me). I did not like any of the characters except the brother and friend girl but both got fucked over so :/ I could not at any point take bootleg Yuno Gasai seriously. From her corny emotionlessness and fake happy act, to what a 14 y/o would consider a deep metaphor (sugar, love, jars etc). Everything about blonde dude was both disgusting and sad and it just became tiring to watch him. Every bad adult in the show being portrayed as evil and no good compared to epic girl Satou was tiring as well. I found the ending where the girls jumped off a burning building so stupidly dramatic that I laughed. Maybe HSL could have worked out better if pink girl was more likeable (or as likeable as an Epstein can be), kind of like how some people wanted Light from Death Note to win in the end. Overall, watch mawaru penguindrum.

After watching the anime, I was disappointed by the direction the manga went in.

about a year or so ago I was scrolling amazon prime with my brother, checking the amazon options. I noticed HSL, and vaguely remembered the name because a while back one of my good friends had talked about it alongside a bunch of other anime they liked. when I stopped scrolling and asked my brother how he’d feel about watching it based off of my very chill friend liking it, he instantly said that it better not be anything weird. I assured him my friend would never like that. put on the first episode and……yeah. my brother got pissed and I was super embarrassed and went to check the messages my friend had sent me about how anime, only to realize I was confused. they were talking about it in the context that an ex they had really loved it and ended up being sort of a weirdo, but that had been just a few days before my friend told me about this ACTUALLY cute and sweet anime they liked.

i watched this aged 13? maybe? at the tail end of yeaaaars long csa and i hated watching it but i couldn't stop. i really think the show suffers from its bait and switch premise, and overall the fact that these terrible people are candy coloured and cutesy. like... the rapist aunt just looks like every anime pastel goth blended together. satou looks like she was ai generated for "crazy yandere girl". i knooooow its trying to do the whole ddlc thing but honestly even higurashi (which i havent seen) turns out the pastel aesthetic eveey now and then for its horror scenes. love the video! you made something i hated looking back on veey digestable and funny!

Commenting to boost the algorithm, this is really the best semi-abridged recap I’ve seen of Happy Sugar Life. The jokes are amazing, I really laughed alot on 57:36 when you suddenly switched from anime recap to American satire. Don’t ask me about how good the pacing is though, I watched this thing with one hour breaks in-between each episode, so I experienced every recap like its own one-shot. I’d say my experience was good even with the one hour breaks in-between. Also I really appreciate the music credits appearing on-screen.

I was drawing, while listening, and while I greatly appreciate the recap and sane approach to this nightmare of a show, but then I got jumpscared by Everhood music. Other users pointed out other soundtracks from Not-Particularly-Mainstream media, so good on you for having great taste all around! At least it prompted me to express how much I appreciate your breakdown of the series. Good video. The visuals are simple and concise, so it's good as background noise because of how even the audio is (without any segments that are too loud or quiet, that is), and good as something to Fully Watch. The audio of your speaking gets overshadowed by the music sometimes, and the subtitles are kinda janky, but this is a three-hour video, so I get why intricately syncing the subtitles to every segment might not be worth the result, since it's still comprehensible. Nice video! ... I hope the psychic damage dealt to you by this series can be remedied with cat GIF's.

I watched this whole thing a couple of years ago and I felt like I would come across a video like this one day. I'm incredibly surprised to find out through the comment section that people don't vilify the girl. She's just as bad as everyone else. I think Shio has some kind of magical curse that turns people insane when they see her though. If she survived she would end up being the MC of another psychological thriller.
