Time to Connect Episode #79 – Kerrin McCadden – November 26, 2024
Thanks so much to the Vermont poet Kerrin McCadden for a really fun conversation. Kerrin is the author of two books of poetry, "American Wake" (2021) and "Landscape with Plywood Silhouettes" (2014), as well as a chapbook, "Keep This to Yourself" (2020). She’s currently working on a new collection. Kerrin is the recipient of many fellowships and awards (the National Endowment for the Arts, the Vermont Studio Center, The Vermont Arts Council, The Vermont Arts Endowment Fund, the Sustainable Arts Foundation, and many more). She holds an MFA from The Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College and teaches at the Center for Technology, Essex. A dual citizen of Ireland and the U.S., Kerrin lives in South Burlington, Vermont.
In this conversation, we talk briefly about other poets (Billy Collins, Elizabeth Bishop, Wallace Stevens, Charles Bukowski, and Seamus Heaney), Kerrin’s biography, how she discovered her Irish roots and relatives relatively late in life, her poems "American Wake" and "Time," telling the bees about death, teaching high school students, the challenges and opportunities of AI, music Kerrin likes, her fascination with Neanderthals, guilty pleasures, Neil Diamond, the recent election, death and our “last first start,” the element of surprise in poetry, and many more things. Kerrin was kind enough to read several of her poems.

Time to Connect Episode #76 - Jonathan Evison - November 4, 2024

Many thanks to the brilliant novelist Jonathan Evison. What an honor to speak with Johnny about his life and his writing. He has published eight novels, with a ninth to be published in January (The Heart of Winter). As he has said before (and as he mentions in this interview), Johnny credits his third-grade teacher for making a writer out of him: "A lot of stuff, including my sister's death, an...

As I said, fascinating! His songs ha...

Many thanks to Steph Stewart and Mario Arnez. Steph and Mario record and perform under the name Blue Cactus. This was a first for Time to Connect (a duo), and I really enjoyed our chat. I was lucky enough to catch one of their shows recently, and I was immediately captivated. This blurb from their website pretty much says it: “Dream Country: a blend of grit, glitz, groove, and twang that evokes...

Many thanks to an American treasure, and one of my all-time favorites, Willy Vlautin. It was a real honor to chat with Willy, a writer who Ursula K. Le Guin called “one of the bravest novelists writing. Murderers, cheats, sadists, showy examples of the banality of evil, are easy, but it takes real courage to write a novel about ordinary good people.” Willy’s books have won many awards, and he w...

Thanks again to the one and only Bill Frisell for making his second appearance on Time to Connect. I don’t have words to express my gratitude and admiration. Bill is simply an American treasure and a wonderful human being. As I quoted in the first episode with Bill, Nels Cline has said that Bill’s “impact on the landscape of creative music, not just guitar music, is incalculable.” What an honor...

Love love LOVE Lindsey!
Great interview with Beautiful & Talented Terri Binion.
Willy is the greatest. Currently reading The Horse for the 3rd time. I got the UK version a couple months earlier than the US. And I love both covers.
What a great heart-felt interview. I got a lot out of this listening while I draw this morning.
You are an incredible writer Jim. And a wonderful human being.
Midway through and loving this interview. Thanks for doing it! Love Willys music and books.
"I'm not a writer, per se." I call BS.
Thanks for that
Always good to hear a Bill interview!
Bill Frisell! I'm very happy to hear his story. How wonderful!🎸💛
Good to see Bill back on the show!
All the music-nerds like myself still have CD players. Several in my home and I still have one in my car as well. Terry's new album is SUPERB!
One of the finest songwriters on the planet. Thank you for interviewing him.
Listened to Sophomore Slump this morning and was wondering about Jason. There was a Live at KEXP 15 years ago where I remember him talking about the choice to move out of LA. At the time I didn’t understand, now I’m in my 40’s and trying to establish my post city life and create meaning with all the experiences, relationships and inputs (like music). That interview shaped me much like his music. Glad to see him doing seemingly well settled in his existence.
Magic interview. I live in Australia and came to learn of John's slashing lead guitar playing, mainly over recent years when watching, and mega rewatching him make that black Tele " cry and sing", when backing Jerry Jeff on the Austin City Limits/Texas Connection. Just magic lead playing, yes that must be the better part of 50 years' ago. From the guarded little John mentioned about Jerry Jeff, Scamp must have been more than a handful at tines. Shortly after his death, Jimmy Buffett said he doubted if Jerry Jeff would have made it to 40, he certainly did. Would love to hear a longer interview with John talking in my detail about those "interesting" days in Austin in the mid 70's and 80s. Appreciate he , going from vinyl and Cd credits, didn't appear to play on many of Jerry's vinyls and Cds. In any event, very enjoyable and would love to hear more from him. Great show 👏.
I've seen Claudia at so many Frisell shows! Claudia, you need to write a book!
Great interview John and Claudia!
What a great interview John!!!
Cool interview.....
so good to hear Micah talk after enjoying his performances so much. Excellent interview, thx!!!!
This should have a billion views and a billion and one likes, inexplicably. Rutili is a dynamic musical genius and as great a poet as Dylan in a totally different, neo-cubist Americana vein. Anyone who writes a lyric like : "the book is aching for the tree / return, return, return to me / the spark is aching for the light / return, return, return tonight" is a goddamn master in my opinion.
There's a song in this interview waiting to be written. Wonderful moments of introspection.
Thanks for some really good questions! Rod is a very talented and thoughtful guy and I hope more folks will find his music and writing as a result of this interview.
thx for this interview !
Thanks for this interview! Britton is my nephew by marriage, and I learned more about him in this short hour than I have ever known. He is so gifted in many ways. I think a great epitaph for him would be, "He showed his love by example".
Califone would be mega sellers if we had a world who celebrated creativity. Thanks for this interview
What a great conversation. Love BF, definitely one of my top 10 favorite musicians ever.
Good interview. I'm the host of Strictly Jazz Sounds and I enjoyed the conversation.
Excellent interview buddy. I get you better now! Thanks.
One of the best Jason Lytle interviews.
that was interesting :] thanks
Great listen, thanks guys
Hi Mike!
I really love this interview. But then again I love me some Radney
Thank you for the last two questions.
You know, that amazing player, a little unsung but a monster in any genre he choices, that guy!!
Wonderful interview and I second John's recommendations concerning Vanessa's Modern Age and Mixed Tape cds. Her work and that of her band is fascinating!!
Very nice. Bill is a real treasure.
Bill and Double Trio? Yes! ❤️
do richard buckner!
I just reached out to his mgmt. hopefully we can make it hapoen
The Lead Belly story alone was worth the price of admission. Thanks to Florence for joining and you, John, for bringing her to the channel.
It is hard to describe what I just saw. I listened to his songs then listened to the one at the end of this show. I had never heard of Matt before. It is both inspirational and soul crushing. Inspirational because he might be one of the best writers I have had the pleasure to listen to. Soul crushing because I have spent this much time without his artistry. How that is possible is a reminder that the best of them are likely not household names but grind it out and have two jobs. For the sake of the word art…I hope this becomes his full time gig in the near future. I am a huge fan now.
#ThanksForTheMusic #TheBadAsseeryIsStrong
Apologies for the low volume on my end. Will get this fixed for future episodes.
Really great interview John. Loved hearing from Will. Thanks.
Great guys. Great talk!
Another fantastic interview. Man, The Gourds getting back together would be incredible news!
Loved this. Thanks for doing it.
Thanks John - Great interview! Brent is the most down-to-earth songwriter I have had the pleasure to know.
Thank you, Kevin. Bodisatvah is accurate.
