German Soldiers Were Stunned When Allied Paratroopers Landed at Benouville on D-Day in WWII
On June 6, 1944, the world stood at the precipice of history as the Allied forces launched the largest seaborne invasion ever witnessed: D-Day. This audacious operation, codenamed Operation Overlord, marked a pivotal moment in World War II, as brave soldiers from multiple nations stormed the beaches of Normandy, facing insurmountable odds and fierce German defenses. Amidst the chaos and carnage, individual stories of courage and sacrifice emerged, illuminating the human spirit's resilience. This script delves into one such tale, revealing the harrowing experiences of those who fought not just for victory but for freedom itself.
I was abruptly awakened by someone shaking my shoulder. I blinked and glanced at my watch; it was just after midnight, which meant this must be important. Lance Corporal Ateneda, my dependable runner, stood at my bedside, speaking in a low voice. "Lieutenant, sir, a general alert has been issued. Enemy paratroopers are reported to have landed along the coast ahead of us." I looked at him in shock. Could this be a drill? The thought crossed my mind as I quickly jumped out of bed, feeling a bit sad to leave the soft pillows where I had been sleeping so peacefully. I instructed Ateneda to alert the men and prepare for immediate readiness to move. He responded right away, saying, "Yes, sir," before turning and hurrying out of my room. I had the privilege of staying in a small French cottage in Cairon, about eight kilometers from the Channel coast. It was a cozy little room in a charming house. The owners were an elderly couple who had always been friendly to me and my men, despite the German occupation. They stood in their garden wearing nightgowns, looking at me with wide eyes as I stepped out of the cottage fully dressed just a few minutes later. I must have looked quite alarming. There I was in heavy boots, camouflage battle dress, with a blackened face and submachine gun in hand, staring up into the sky from beneath the rim of my steel helmet. It was June 6th, 1944, just after midnight, and it felt like chaos had descended upon peaceful Cairon. As I was getting dressed, I had already heard the ominous sound of enemy bombers approaching it seemed like there were many of them. I looked up into the dark sky with tension as the roaring grew louder and louder. A deep thundering noise came from the direction of nearby Caen, shaking the ground beneath me. The city was being bombed by heavy Allied aircraft formations. The flashes from the explosions turned night into day, and the loud droning of countless four-engine bombers filled the air as they flew over us. The sky above Caen was glowing red. Our anti-aircraft guns had started firing back in defense.
The intermittent explosions in the sky, however, seemed to have little effect. Caen, the ancient Norman city known for its beautiful monastery, was engulfed in thick clouds of smoke, which were repeatedly lit up by flashes of lightning. The smoke loomed like a distant, solid wall a sight both threatening and awe-inspiring for us in nearby Cairon. Ateneida reported the details of the situation in short, concise sentences. Our headquarters had ordered us to be ready to move at a moment’s notice. We needed to act quickly now. My platoon was stationed in the garden of a chateau right next to the cottage where I was staying. I quickly issued the necessary orders to get us moving. The fires raging in Caen provided so much light that we didn’t even need flashlights. We packed our gear swiftly and prepared it for transport. We would leave our belongings for the supply detachment to pick up later. Who knew if we would ever come back? It was better to be ready for whatever lay ahead. My platoon was equipped with three modified French half-tracks fitted with 75mm anti-tank guns. My men moved quickly, and soon my track commanders reported they were ready to roll. My self-propelled guns stood before me, fully fueled and armed, ready for action. Just as I was about to climb aboard, my hosts came rushing toward me. They were carrying food and drinks with tears in their eyes, and I was taken by surprise; I had never expected such a gesture. They thrust their gifts into my arms and wished all the best for me and my men. I had grown fond of them during my stay, but alas, it was time to leave. We mounted up and set off toward the rally point for our 8th Company of the 192nd Panzer Grenadier Regiment, part of the 21st Panzer Division.
