How America’s Battleships Crushed Japan at Surigao Strait in WWII’s Last Great Naval Clash
The darkness of the night was palpable, a heavy blanket that shrouded the waters of the Surigao Strait. The air was thick with tension, the only sound the gentle lapping of the waves against the hulls of the ships. It was October 25, 1944, and the stage was set for one of the most pivotal battles of World War II. In the distance, the faint outline of the American fleet could be seen, a formidable array of battleships, cruisers, and destroyers. They were the guardians of the invasion force, tasked with protecting the vulnerable transports and cargo ships as they made their way to the beaches of Leyte. But the Americans were not alone. Lurking in the shadows, waiting for the perfect moment to strike, was the Japanese fleet. Led by the seasoned Admiral Shima, they had been tasked with breaking through the American defenses and wreaking havoc on the invasion force. The Japanese had a reputation for being fierce and formidable warriors, and they had a few tricks up their sleeve. They had developed a new tactic, one that relied on speed and stealth rather than brute force. It was called the "pincer movement," and it involved splitting their fleet into two separate groups, one of which would attack the Americans head-on while the other snuck around behind them. The Americans, however, were not unaware of the Japanese plans. They had broken the Japanese code, and they knew exactly what to expect. They had set a trap, one that would use the very tactics that the Japanese had planned to use against them. As the night wore on, the tension continued to build. The Americans waited patiently, their guns at the ready. The Japanese, meanwhile, crept ever closer, their hearts pounding with anticipation. It was a night that would go down in history, a night that would see the clash of two mighty fleets in a battle that would decide the fate of the war. And so, with the stage set and the players in position, the battle began. The Americans opened fire first, their guns blazing as they tore into the Japanese fleet. The Japanese responded in kind, their own guns firing as they charged headlong into the fray. The battle had begun, and nothing would ever be the same again.
The U.S. battleships that sank in Pearl Harbor were repaired and ready for battle. The U.S. Navy wanted revenge against Japan for the surprise attack. At the Strait of Surigao, the Navy prepared to face the Japanese fleet. As the U.S. ships waited, they saw flashes of lightning in the distance. A storm was approaching, with strong winds and heavy rain. The radio equipment on the ships crackled with static electricity. Suddenly, a bolt of lightning lit up the sky, and Lt. J.G. Terry Chambers saw the Japanese fleet approaching. It was October 25, 1944. The Japanese were on their way to the Battle of Surigao Strait, which would be the last battleship duel in history. This battle was part of the larger Battle of Leyte Gulf, the biggest naval battle ever fought. The Battle of Leyte Gulf was a turning point in the war. The U.S. had decided to invade the Philippines instead of Taiwan. This decision led to the Battle of Leyte Gulf, which would fulfill General Douglas MacArthur's promise to return to the Philippines. The U.S. plan was to invade the island of Leyte, which would provide a base for air and naval operations. The next steps would be to take the island of Mindoro and then launch a final attack on the main island of Luzon.

Nope !! You're half steppers .
The strategy of symbolic deterant only made sense with the existence of the US Pacific fleet as alies. After Pearl Harbour, Force Z found itself confronting the entirety of the Imperial Japanese navy in a shooting war, which had not been the case when it set forth.
Tom Phillips was not a Fighting Admiral- Force Z was first time in WWII that Phillips had commanded a fleet. The Prince of Wales' captain John Leach though had been blooded (literally) in this war in the Battle of the Denmark Strait. Prince of Wales' gunfire had damaged Bismarck enough to kill the mission and force Lutjens to head for Brest Phillip's Initial mistake was made when Repul.se was called back from her voyage to Freemantle, three days before. His fatal one was under-estimating Air Power (he's obviously never heard of Taranto) and then not requesting air cover

You may be completely correct about this ship, but you are wrong about the Fletcher class, they fixed the top heavy issues for one thing. With five dual purpose five inch guns, 10 torpedo launchers, as many light and medium aa guns as they could fit, two depth charge racks and six K gun launchers they could handle any thing the IJN could throw at them They served almost exclusively in the Pacific where they were a highly successful sub fighter, anti-aircraft platform and general purpose destroyer. So much so more were built than any other class of destroyer.
USS Murphy (DD-603) never fought against the Japanese Imperial Navy because she didn't get there until after the surrender.
