Great shots there. I use the G80 and love it
The G80 is a great camera - not much to complain about (except, maybe, AF in video). More camera than most people will ever need. Thanks for watching and sharing.
Thank you for this review. Personally, I don't find the Quattros as good as the Merrils in terms of image quality and, more importantly, in their post-processing potential. I own both the DP2M and DP1Q, and the latter pales into insignificance in comparison, especially when used in somewhat challenging higher dynamic range light. This is based on tens of thousands of photos taken mainly outdoors across Europe. But there's no point in ironing out the drawbacks of the Merril series either, because they're very real - it's very slow and consumes a battery in no time, so the Quattro clearly has its place. I still regret that they decided to go down the interpolation route, instead of continuing with the original Foveon design, where all layers have the same number of pixels.
So far, I have never taken the Merrills and the Quattro out with me at the same time! I should do this to gain a better insight for comparison. I agree with you regarding the original Foveon design - it's that uniqueness that has kept me with Sigma all these years. Thank you for watching and sharing.
The quattro doesn't loose colors in the shadows, same for the highlights (those do not clip hard btw, but in a progressive way and the highlight recovery option in SPP is damaging), the quattro series' metering seems to tend to overexpose images. I vastly prefer the softer look of the quattro sensor, especially combined with the crazy resolution of the S-Hi file output.
@@rebours but quattro gives ugly green-magenta artifacts around highlights, in the darks and randomly on evenly lit surfaces
@@barmalini mostly not, it can happen if you try to go against some particular scenes natural exposure (it's still rare in my experience) or compensate a wrong exposure setting (highlights artifacts are only caused by the highlight correction setting in my experience). Banding/horizontal aliasing artifacts can be found on evenly lit surfaces even at 100 iso, that's the only true bummer these cameras present, I think resampling before printing is essential...
@@rebours Interesting - thank you for sharing this info. And thanks for watching!
Enjoying these end of term reviews and the images. It is a process of elimination with set ups. Always good to try various equipment and see if you vibe with it. Thanks for sharing Stevie.
Don't know why I hadn't had a structured look-back before. I'm finding real value in looking back through a whole year! Thanks for watching and commenting, as always. And wishing you a happy new year.
Just picked one up for 100 bucks. Great camera
They've stood the test of time very well. Still a really solid performer and a joy to use. Thanks for watching.
Great pictures Stevie. Think I like the first picture in London and the wasp the most. First year for me after taking photography back up as a hobby again. Found your channel when searching Lumix GX1 reviews; which I bought this year and love. Took a picture of a chap and his dog about 6 months ago. While printing some pics for family at xmas I printed this random one too and gave it to him today. He was super stoked. I just thought it was such a good picture & selfish to not share with him. Picked up the love between him & his dog really well. All the best for 2025 bud.
Interesting. I've been surprised before when I've given prints to motorcycle racers and they've been really pleased! Nice thing to do. The GX1 is an amazing camera that doesn't feel "old". I'm on my second GX1 having sold my first and realised it was a mistake.... Thanks for watching and sharing.
Cant hear a thing you’re saying dude, you need to up the volume or speak out louder.
Probably for the best. I'm mostly just blah, blah, blah. Thanks for attempting to watch though! And Happy New Year.
I have to say that my K200D body which it kinda cheap has been brilliant.. wether proof as one of the top of the line ones. A sleeper of a later gen ccd dslr.. Did you factory reset your K5 when you got it?
Yeah, I went round the factory reset loop a few times! Thanks for watching.
I have a K-1 and a K-3, but I also have two K-5 bodies. I particularly like shooting B&W with them, making full use of the K-5's extra sensitivity options, namely ISO 80/100/125/160. Used for portraits, one routinely mounts a Pentax DA 40mm f2.8, the other a Pentax DA 70mm f2.4
That sounds like a great set-up! Thanks for watching and sharing.
I use Apple's Aperture to edit photo's and have a similar process to yourself. Sometimes it can be a bit of a chore to edit photos so having software you're comfortable with is vital. I know Apeture isn't the best, and it's outdated but I love the way it works.
Yeah, I agree. I'm never in a rush to 'upgrade' to the latest versions of software when I'm happy with what I'm achieving. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Good to see your workflow with the Fovean output. Teal & Orange is very pleasing and could be a Fujifilm simulation.
I think the Fuji film sims are generally pretty hard to beat but it's always worth looking at, and experimenting with, what else is out there. Thanks for watching and commenting (as always!).
K5IIS is a great camera. There’s no major problem that I have had obtaining focus and in manual focus the focusing screen is bright and clear. Perhaps the mkII and mkIIs had better firmware. I find that the camera has superb dynamic range and will expose and focus indoors at highest ISO values. Exposure compensation allows you to expose to taste so that’s fine. The camera offers + or - 5 stops. The downside for me can be the write speed and the fact that the image preview isn’t instantly available with certain menu options in play. Image quality is fantastic and the files are superbly malleable. It’s a robust, compact well specified body that makes great images possible. Try to borrow a K5IIs it’s still very relevant.
I think you're probably right about the newer cameras being even better. The original K5 is still a great camera though - great IQ, beautiful build and some really interesting (and useful) "Pentax" features. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts.
Hi Steve, Sigma sd user hear, would love a vid on how you edit via Sigma photo pro etc. 👍

Super little bike. It's been on my list since they were new but never made it to the top. I'm ok with not hogging all the best toys. Definitely only use E5. E10 is fine in closed systems with evap canisters but open vented in low temperature storage is not a good combination. I get most of us know that already but california is not the real world.
Being a short person, most of the Japan market specific bikes have always been attractive for me. Definitely worth a look while there are still good bikes about. I hear you re E5 v E10. Thanks for watching!

I would love to get a VFR-400. I currently have a 1986 Suzuki GSX-R 750 and 1990 Kawasaki ZX-7. I've only seen a few VFR-400's for sale.
Those are iconic bikes you have. In my experience (ZX-7R) the Kawasaki's feel like they're built to last forever! If the RC30 wasn't so expensive, that would be the ideal stablemate for the GSX-R and the ZX-7! Thanks for watching.

Hi Stevie. Did you have any problem with scroll wheel on your GR ? I'm planing to buy GRIII but I read the dust and scroll wheel make a big problems. Otherwise GR is amazing camera.
Hi, I'm really careful with all my kit and I very rarely seem to have any problems. I use my GR every day at the moment and, in my five years of ownership, I've had no issues with any aspect of the camera. No dust. No issues with the scroll wheel. I use the metal "twist on" cap when I pocket the camera. I would have no hesitation in buying another GR. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@stevieb7121 Thank you very much for an answer. I wish you all the best.
@@deckoizkraja3107 A pleasure. I'd recommend the GR series to everyone.
worse still is when you have a DP2M with faulty control wheel that gets you stuck on f/2.8, cleaning didn't work (switch spray) however the end result justifies the frustration even shooting always on aperture 2.8.... the DP2M RAW at ISO 100 blows away many so called professional DSLR's more than a decade later. Amazing camera.
Yes, I completely agree. It doesn't matter how "difficult" these cameras are, I am always astonished at how amazing the results are! There really is nothing to compare to the Foveon sensor. Thanks for watching.
I love how the K-5 can shoot at ISO 80. Mine sits on a monopod and usually has either a Pentax-A 28mm f2.8 or a Pentax-A 50mm f1.7 attached to it.
There's no doubt the K-5 can still hold its own against newer cameras - particularly with regard to build and IQ ! Thanks for watching.
Striking images of Farnborough Stevie. I think I slightly prefer the black and whites, if I had to choose but the chrome filter has an interesting aesthetic too. Really enjoyed this one with the image critique after 👏📷
I have to admit, at the moment, I prefer the black and white too! A bit galling considering that IR Chrome filter was £50. Given the investment, I'm going to spend some more time looking into what I can achieve with the IR Chrome output. Could be more updates on this in a future video. Thanks for watching and commenting (as always).
What is the closes focusing distance on DP1 Merrill?
I've just tested this out and, from the film plane marking, the closest the AF could manage was 18.75cm. This is 13.5cm from the lens front. Manual focus gives the same result and the scale displayed on the LCD says 0.2m is the closest. Ironically, the DP3M gives similar results (23.5cm from the film plane) but with a much larger image rendering. Thanks for watching!
@@stevieb7121 Thanks for the info. There is a possibility I could get DP1 Merrill for about 300usd, which is okay price. And I was thinking maybe I could use this camera for scanning 35mm film negatives I have, among the usual photography.
@@SomeUnremarkableGuy I don't have much experience of that process although I did recently try putting some 35mm negatives on a light box and photographing them with a macro lens. That worked out well with a Fuji X-T2 and Pentax-M 100mm macro. It worked out less well with a Canon M6 with EF-M 28mm macro. I've not experimented with a fixed lens camera yet.
Hi Stevie, I'd like to say how much I've enjoyed your content. You took some cracker images in the last few videos, particularly the one where you went to the races with the EM 1 m2. Great stuff. Kind Regards from Australia.
Its funny what we get use to with modern camera's. In the 80s everything was manual and you had to really think about focusing, aperture and iso for every shot. This led to a practice of really considering the next picture. I kinda love it so for me the K5 looks like a great fit.
Yeah, I completely agree. It's well worth spending the time to think through the whole process. That's part of the joy. Thanks for watching.
Saying "it's a little bit heavy" is a BIG misunderstanding.. Try next time to walk with Sony A7-IV and Sony 200-600 mm, that's what I have to hold on entire day, it's 3,15 kg. OM-1 and 300 mm f4, is *LESS* than 2kg, it's around 1,95 kg.. it's SUPER SUPER lightweight.
Yeah, I take your point! I guess I've been spoiled by years of micro four thirds use. My previous biggest lens was the Pana-Leica 100-400 and that was less than a kilogram (985g according to the Panasonic website). Thanks for watching and correcting me!
@@stevieb7121 That's the reasons Sony users, complain about wildlife lenses choice. There is not any, comparing to Nikon (price aside..) there's only 100-400 which is old, and lack of internalzooming, there is heavy 200-600 with some other disadvantages (not so fast lens, and not so bright), then there is only Sigma 500 mm f5.6, but you can't put any TC if ever want to, and 500 mm for widllife is average, and then it's only 300 mm GM - even shorter, and more likely to sport photography than to wildlife, and then 400 mm GM and 600 mm GM. Sony is TERRIBLE choice for wildlife, I'd not recommend it to anyone. If I could start from scratch, that would be Nikon or OM System.
@@pentagramyt417 I was a Nikon shooter in the distant past (D300) and was happy with the camera, apart from the size. The Olympus bodies are tiny compared to what was available at the time from Nikon. And I'm a very small person, so it makes a big difference for me.
@@stevieb7121 I also prefer smaller bodies, my hands are not that big, so that would be terrifying to hold Medium Format. If I was only focused on Wildlife, I think, I would definitely invest my money into OM System and their 300 mm F4. For my personal taste, OM System is one step behind perfect flagship camera, they just need to improve video bitrates, add 4k 120 fps, and maybe.. MAYBE give it 5 megapixels more for this tiny sensor. Slighly improve AF, and it's done.
Does the M6 have IBIS?
Yes, what the book says is "Electronic video stabilization combines with in-lens IS to give 5-axis IS". So, for photography, I guess it's just the lens stabilisation - and most of the lenses designed for the system seem to be stabilised. I've not yet had a chance to test this properly but I'll be interested to compare it with the Olympus cameras I have. Thanks for watching!
Welcome back Mr Stevie I did wonder which equipment you were trying in the absence. Now we know 😊 Great shots of the bikes. Lovely lens.
Thanks. Yeah, a great lens but I still can't believe how expensive it is! I'm just old skool tight with money! There are more try-outs on the way - I seem to be always intrigued by the obsolete kit..... Thanks for watching, as always.
Ever considered a SD1Merrill?
I confess I thought about it but two things put me off. One is the fact that it's a DSLR and I didn't love the SD15 enough to commit further in that direction. Second was I don't think the price is justified. The sd Quattro has now surely scratched the Foveon itch! Thanks for watching and asking!
Hi Stevie, thanks for the video. I have a K-5 and many lenses for it. I am wondering if your camera has a focusing problem. I rarely have a problem with finding focus, even with long lenses. Just asking.
Hi, it's possible although it certainly seemed to perform better/more reliably with some lenses than others. My biggest frustration was failing to achieve really accurate manual focus without resorting to live-view. The K5 is an amazing camera for its age though. Thanks for watching!
Great video, thank you! I actually have an E-PL2 and I was curious if you could point me towards any instructions on how to do the infrared mod. Thanks again!
I bought my camera already converted. From what I understand you have to remove the hot filter (is that the right term?) in front of the sensor and, to retain accurate AF, replace it with a piece of crystal glass. I've done camera and lens repairs in the past but this is something I've not tried. Thanks for watching!
Hi Stevie, can you speak to this camera's weather sealing quality -- Particularly as it to relates to the wet in the UK? I've been looking at getting something smaller and the FourThirds, Lumix options, this one especially seem to fit what I'm looking for but I want to find out if it's capable of lasting long term, shooting in the rain. Traditionally have used Olympus full frames for this but looking at smaller, lighter options and do like some of Lumix cameras. I know it's an old video but if you happen to read my comment and reply I'd greatly appreciate it mate. Thanks, M.
Hi Mark - yeah, I've used both the G80 and the Olympus E-M1 in wet weather and they've both performed well. The only issue I had was with the E-M1 viewfinder fogging slightly. I think if you found a well looked after example of either camera, they will serve well. One key point is using weather sealed lenses. The Lumix 12-60mm kit lens was fine for me, as are the Olympus PRO range of lenses. Thanks for watching.
@@stevieb7121 Thanks so much for such a timely reply! That's good to know, I'll be looking to get mine (G80) tomorrow 👍🏻 I can't put my finger on it but I really like the colour you get with their cameras...
@@MarkFraserB25 I agree regarding the Lumix colours. I don't think you'll be disappointed with a G80. Great cameras that are packed with more features than you could need.
I have the preceding GF1. It too is a pretty decent compact. I have the 20mm attached. The 15mm would be my preferred focal length.
The GF1 is a really good camera - solid build quality and I liked having the physical switch for the self timer. I bought my first GF1 BECAUSE it had the 20mm lens attached! I still use the 20mm but sold a copy of the Lumix 14mm in favour of the Pana-Leica 15mm. All of this is good kit that won't hold you back! Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@stevieb7121 Yes, It’s a great walk around. I still prefer film and shoot a Mamiya7, Hassy 500CM and a few 35mm’s but people shouldn’t disregard micro4/3
Just ordered an E PL8, also to upgrade my E PL2. Thanks for the review, I agree with your thinking on this model. I also much prefer carrying the Micro 43, rather than my Nikon D500, when riding my bike.
Considering what cameras like the E-PL8 can do, they are real bargains. In my opinion, the E-PL8 feels like a better quality product than the E-PL2. The fact that E-PL2s still seem to be running fine is testament to reasonable quality though. The small size of the lenses for the M43 cameras is the real advantage (the bodies of APS-C cameras are down to a similar size now). Thanks for watching and commenting.
I just bought also mine 5 monts ago. Can you recommend lens for street photography? I'm a beginner user. Thanks
@@lloydvillanueva7433 There are some good lenses in M43 to choose from for street. I personally prefer the Olympus 17mm f1.8 (and there is a cheaper f2.8 version). I also like the Lumix 20mm f1.7. If you prefer a slightly wider field of view, the Lumix 14mm and the Panasonic-Leica 15mm are good choices. I almost always use prime lenses for street as it focuses my mind better. Thanks for watching.

Great camera…
I never seem to tire of the Sigma cameras but, just sometimes, I need a short break from them! Thanks for watching.
I bought a K5 last year around this time. There are so many older autofocus lenses for sale for the K5 that I bought quite a few for under $50 CAD! There are tons of vintage lenses for sale. I love the camera. It makes beautiful images. BTW the Pentax SR system is as good as my om5 mk111. It is a beautiful camera. Enjoy!
The K5 is a really capable camera that's stood the test of time far better than many of its rivals. IQ and usability are still fantastic. Thanks for watching and sharing.
> BTW the Pentax SR system is as good as my om5 mk111. That is very interesting. I consistently get astonishing results from my EM5.3 and happen to have some old Pentax glass.
I’m on the hunt for a 720nm IR converted camera and have 2 mft cameras already. One being an em10iii which I may get converted, unless I find a cheaper used one that fits the bill. You took some really great photos with your gear.
Thanks for your kind words! I think MFT is ideal for IR because, with the kit being generally smaller than other formats, it's not such a hassle if you want to carry a second body. I'd always advise a 'full spectrum' conversion so you can pick which ever wave length you prefer later. I most stick with 720nm but also sometimes use 680 or 650nm, just depends on how extreme I want the IR effect to be. Thanks for watching and commenting.
