Alaska Whale Watch
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 29 ก.ย. 2022
Hi there! I'm Dolphin Doug. In 1994 I started and still run the first whale watching company in Juneau. We're a smaller outfit with smaller boats for personal service.
I started this channel to share with you some of knowledge I've acquired over the years. I don't pretend to be an expert, but I know a little about a whole lot, in particular Alaska, Juneau, whales, whale watching and the Alaska cruise experience. But be forewarned, I occasionally drive a tour bus, and we drivers are notorious for making up answers. Nothing on this channel should be assumed to be entirely true.
My ultimate goal is to have you love Alaska as much as I do, and maybe to have you come out with us when you visit.
Please look around the site and I hope you find answers to your questions, if not, feel free to ask.
Stay warm and dry.

First Orca of ‘23
มุมมอง 87ปีที่แล้ว
Our captains and naturalists were out training before the first cruise ship in April and saw these beautiful Orca or Killer whales near Juneau. Orca have complex lifestyles and are akin to wolves of the sea in that they life in family groups (pods) and hunt cooperatively. Other than bigger Sperm Whales that only eat squid and the like, Orca are the largest predator and have been seen killing Bl...
Juneau’s Man-made Glacier [Beginning & End]
มุมมอง 93ปีที่แล้ว
Every year Juneau’s road department piles snow on this parking lot to get it out of the street. The size of this pile depends upon the snowfall. This year, the pile was average sized, I’ve seen it easily 3x bigger. Just one more tidbit about Alaska. Cheers, Dolphin Doug Call 866-350-5978 to book your tour over the phone.
The #1 Piece of Advice for cruising to Alaska in April
มุมมอง 3.7Kปีที่แล้ว
If you’ve booked a cruise to Alaska and are wondering how it might be different from peak season, here’s a single piece of advice from a local. There’s a chill in the air. Come on up, enjoy, see Alaska in almost summer. I recommend you come back in June, July or August. If you’ve already been here, check out May and September which can be wonderful. April and October are always iffy. I made thi...
Coast Guard in Juneau
มุมมอง 398ปีที่แล้ว
Juneau, Alaska is the flag port for Alaska’s Coast Guard but operations are strewn all over the state. This ship, CG Cutter Munro is stationed in Alameda, California but is presently on a several month cruise in Alaska, primarily for fisheries. It has 100 crew (not passengers) a helipad, two stalwart rubber boats and a rear access for them so they can launch and retrieve in any weather. It is n...

Don’t ask an Alaskan what to Wear! [Here’s Why]
I don’t think that’s the real size
you forgot to mention all the quads
As someone who has lived in Juneau for the majority of my life, I was always wondering what those things were now.
That looks scary.
thank you, cant wait until April 2025 for my first cruse to my state of birth
Hi
My visit to Alaska will be April 28 to May 5, 2025. Happy cruising for me!
Incredibly well explained! I was curious and didn‘t know the answer and you cleared it right up! Thank you for that 👍
Is there a place where there are no cruise ships and great whale watching if we fly up and rent a car? How's Seward? Thanks
Dont forget the mosquitoes during summer
WHATS THE HUMMING SOUND?
Good question 😨
yes i want to touch ice
i like all your videos. make more and get them out to more people
like your videos...coming in 1st week of October
Lol. You sound like Mo Rocco on NPR. Thanks for the tip.
I love your videos. We are flying into Juneau and hope to follow your tips
The trees don't stop it? I thought it was safe where trees are on the mountain?
Great advice! If my son ends up getting the job in Juneau, I'll buy him one❤
Is that the Beyrends neighborhood, under the Mt. Juneau slide? You are very interesting to listen to!
Hi, I really appreciate your information. My son is possibly moved to Juneau for work soon, and will be looking to rent an apartment. Would you mind telling me where he should look to be safe from avalanche slide areas? Thank you for any information you can give. Melissa
2 years later and it's still as beautiful as ever Went on a cruise there
I was there in March last year. What you're saying is very true. I wonder, is it possible to ice skate on the ice in front of the glacier?
Bummer, I booked a cruise with a possible viewing of northern lights 😢
hello, I was there two years ago in June on a cruise when it was too late to walk across the lake it really is my dream to go see the ice caves and with my more limited ability now with my hands injured I need to walk across it as opposed to doing the hike around when would you say is the latest month that we could still walk across the lake? Would early May be too late? My goal is to go into the ice caves
Thank you for this! My Alaska cruise is coming up in late April and I live in Phoenix so I am a total sissy about the cold. Lots of layers!
So, so helpful! thank you!
Sir, I was analyzing your TH-cam channel…Your content is very good .. but your videos don’t have SEO. So your video is not getting rank or even views. Proper SEO can increase your channel. I can make it better by customizing it and using top SEO.SEO is important because ranking uses keywords and tags to help people find your videos easily when they search for topics. It attracts more viewers and helps grow your channel organically. I will do your work first for free, if you like my work and if you are happy with my work then we will move forward.
I'll be there Mid June, 2024.
Dolphin Doug, don't leave us hanging.. :)
This is the 2nd video short where you mention that you have a good reason for going Alaska first, then cruise south. But there is not longer video in the video list. And it is not in any of the submenus on the website. Is this meant to be a really tricky thing to find? Trying to plan for next year.
If you want to live where you feel welcome and people are friendly, don't live in Montana. If you live in Montana, most people hate you for being there.
When I was younger I was on my grandpa's boat and the boat beeps when it's too close to shore and we were pretty far out and it randomly started to beep and on the radar and my grandpa saw an orca right under the boat.
I’ve been there. It’s beautiful.
I used to live at the hatchery in the 90s when I was in Middle School my dad would make me hitchhike into town
That's Amazing
Come on out.
Great video will be there in May and was hoping for whales
Just posted a short showing our first whale of the season!
I live in juneau alaska. I been to that cabin often!
Randy, good for you. I’m still finding special spots after 29 years. Skater’s cabin is a completely different place in the depths of winter. Where’s your special spot (that others can know about).
It's my dream to come here btw im from Pakistan
Ya know, I could have a ball in Pakistan. Enjoy where you are. Come on up.
I’m leaving Seattle April 29! Juneau on May1. I will be prepared. Thanks for your helpful video!
Awesome! Expect miserable horrible weather and a strong desire to come back in July. People that only come in peak season don’t know what they’re missing. You’ll have a ball.
I love that place I walk there almost every day
Nice. I’m between dogs.
Thanks for the info.
You bet!
East or west?
Hmmm. Mendenhall Glacier runs southward. This slot is towards the East. Unfortunately, with recent weather, I would not go there without full ice climbing gear and an experienced partner. Cheers.
Thank you. Haven’t been in a long time. Very beautiful. Only asked because ppl do the reverse camera thing. That’s all.
@@whalewatchalaska they were probably wondering if you parked at the East or West Glacier parking lot.
Sometimes, the name history behind the ship is pretty interesting. Douglas Munro was the CG's only medal of honor winner during WWII. As for this ship and the one it replaced, 418ft vs 378, crew of 111 vs 167 (give or take a few), the older Munro was "sold" to the Sri Lanka Navy and is now the SLNS Vijayabahu. It was re-commissioned in 2022. A few of the 378's were turned over to other Navy's as they are very capable platforms and have more life left. Wait till you see what they are replacing the 270's and 210's with. The 210's have been in operation since the mid 1960's. Never served in Alaska. Got my taste of "cold weather" in the Great Lakes (3 tours, including 1 ice breaker) and the rest where it was a little warmer. ;-)
What awesome info! I toured USS North Carolina and USS Yorktown this winter, totally exhausted myself and two kids looking at everything, to do so with someone who knew the stories would be fantastic. Regarding Munro, he died protecting Marines in a horrific battle early in the war, I’m sad to learn he didn’t survive but some of the Marines did. Semper Fi, brother.
@@whalewatchalaska Which is another story in itself. The Marines never forget. During that incident, the Navy had told the CG going after the Marines was a suicide mission and could not "approve" it, but the CG went anyway. Fast forward through the years. I remember reading somewhere that when members from Munro's boat passed, Marines would be there. When the last guy, a SN, passed, it was a contingent of Marines who carried him to his grave. It was their way of showing their respect to guys and an organization who sacrificed to save them (their brothers) from what could have been a total wipe out of the hundreds of Marines left onshore. I would have never thought much about that story and the Marines actions afterwards had it not been for my nephew, who was in the ROTC while in college back in the 80's and it was something they were told during their "classes". Of all the stories of heroisms performed by Marines over the years, they chose to tell the story of how 1 Coastguardsman chose to command a group of landing crafts and gave his life to save a beach full of Marines. It's a shame if history like that, between the services, fade like everything else that makes our militaries the best that they are. I've been around all our branches over the 20+ years I served and as much as we poke one another from time to time, we would do whatever necessary to get them home. Regards.

Sorry, I barely converse in English.
By the 9/11 memorial it’s like a fucking slip n slide during the winter months I fell there once.
Yeah, brother. I’ve been sliding on my driveway from berm melt in early April. Injuries are real.
The silence is loud
Already spring. This place is changing. Fresh snow does make it amazingly quiet.
Unlike the other military branches that train in hopes they never have to use their skills, the CG exercises their skills 24/7, 365 days a year. Ex one hitch old Coastie here.
I’m in the boating business and I approve!
Well our odds don't look good for our first trip to Alaska since it's July but I know we will love Alaska so we will be back again maybe September next time. We named our daughter Aurora as well and love the name so very much so looking forward to seeing the Northern Lights one day! New subscribers and supporters of your channel so excited to Visit Alaska this summer and probably the first of many times. Will check out more of your videos! We are excited to Vlog Alaska!!
July is fantastic for so many reasons and maybe you’ll bring Aurora for everyone else to see. Come on up. A couple of days ago we missed the best Aurora show of the year with lots of green and red. Just be careful bringing kids, they might become permanent residents. Cheers!
@@whalewatchalaska Thanks for the response we are very excited to see Alaska! Oh we know our daughter moved to New York for 3 years. We got her back when covid hit but now she is out exploring again. Looking forward to seeing more ideas from your channel and cant wait to vlog Alaska for ours. See you around.. Cheers!!
So. Cool
I posted the video, now I miss being there, so I feel you.
Love juno
Affirmative.
