SPLICE: A Fresh Take on TTRPGs

Splice is a Medieval Fantasy TTRPG that I've been working off and on for the past 4 years. Since January, I've been putting serious time into it so it can be its own thing - not just an add-on for currently existing tabletops. It attempts to blend mechanics I admire from various tabletops while maintaining a certain level of simplicity. But it is Open Beta so there are still a lot of kinks. If ...

    Great demonstration of the combat mechanics during the opening! Seeing the zones applied in a situation like that makes for some interesting scenarios, especially if the zones were moving (like a moving carriage).

      Hi! Unfortunately, TH-cam is being a jerk: because I haven't posted a video recently, basic features like linking to external sites in the description and pinning comments are disabled for my channel at the moment. I'll see if I can I can post another comment with the link so you can get the game. If that doesn't work (TH-cam also doesn't like it when stuff is Ctrl+C/V'ed into comments) try searching "inscryption multiplayer" and that should bring up an Itch page on Google.

    Can't open the playtest files right now to check. But: - Do your zones support aspects, such as in the game FATE? A short bullet-pointed descriptor. In that game, players can interact with the zone's things, create advantages out of it, and change it. Pushing over a cart for a +2 defense, setting a cart on fire and shooting an arrow through it to create a +2 fire damage arrow. Players can stack advantage, which seems cheesy at first (+2 from being an awesome archer, +2 from shooting through flames, +2 from enemy being held still by a party member, +2 from the arrow being enchanted with heat-seeking magic), but it creates amazing stories. "Do you remember that time when I shot a heat-seeking arrow through a fire created by Jeff, where Thomas held the enemy just perfectly still for me, and I oneshotted the enemy? We finally worked all together and created that perfect moment! That was amazing!" --- Fate zone aspect usage example: at a Dance club: Outside (queue of party people, strict dress code), VIP area (balcony overlooking the dance floor, well-stocked bar), Bouncer (need to deal with to reach the VIP area), Toilets (at back) (ceramic sinks and toilets, tiled floor and walls), Dance floor (loud dance music, crowded dance floor), In the day (eerily quiet, tacky floor) - How do you do magic? D&D style with leveled spell slots and vancian casting? A simpler system with a mana resource? One of the most genius ways to create "soft magic" is the magic system of the game Wicked Ones. In that system there are themed spell schools each with a flavor and a requirement. Fire magic requires a flammable target, while illusion mind control magic requires an intelligent target. Then, a spell is considered to have 1 target, has an instant effect, and does something that one can plausibly do without magic. Roll a difficulty check to succeed in spellcasting. For each thing you change (1 target to many targets; instant effect to ongoing effect; something one can do without magic to something one needs lots of time or lots of people to do without magic; or to something impossible to do without magic), increase the difficulty by one step. Actual effects are freeform. - What does your typical game loop looks like? Go to a dungeon, clear it through combat, rest in town, go to another dungeon? - Do you have specific game procedures for handling combat (D&D, Pathfinder), such as rolling initiative and creating turn-based play with hit points? Or do you rather roll for consequences in free play "Player: I shoot the guard in its head. They are now dead." "GM: Make a roll for consequences." "Player: "* roll *" "GM: Yes, they are dead. But one of its comrades comes around the corner, seeing you shoot them, and now they are running back, most likely to get backup. What do you do?" - Combat as war, versus combat as sport? In combat as sport, you are supposed to play well-balanced fair fights, often in a contained room. Modern D&D does this. In combat as war, it's fair to redirect the river to the dungeon, drown every denizen, then redirect the river again, wait for the dungeon to dry up, and loot everything without worry. These game styles might be very incompatible. What is the default assumption of yours? This is also aligned with how OSR has often deadly combats, so drowning the high-level monsters is fair play to survive another day. While in modern D&D, it's almost seen as cheating. - Often, XP is rewarded for the things you want to see happen in play. D&D rewards XP through combat, so players will do combat. Early D&D rewards XP through gold, gotten through exploration, so players will do exploration. Blades in the Dark rewards XP for doing things with dreadful consequences on a fail (and awards XP even on a fail) such as leaping over a creaky wooden bridge over a lava pit, so players will do these things. Preparing and planning for it reduces the consequences of a fail, but also takes away the XP. Blades in the Dark punishes planning and rewards risky play. And Girl By Moonlight rewards XP only at the end of a session, if a session included at least one of the following: expressing your belief, drives, role, or background; struggling with issues from your promises or obligation; displayed the contents of your heart; or addressing a challenge with the skills of your archetype (e.g. using kindness and self sacrifice for the Guardian character). For each bullet point that happened, mark 1 xp. So, in short, it rewards specific roleplay.

      I've been meaning to look into FATE. It often comes up in my research or when I talk to some people about the system. As of yet, improvised actions such as the ones you've described for FATE haven't been explicitly stated to exist in combat, as I didn't have a concise way of expressing so without potentially bogging down the core rules for combat. But improvised actions are certainly intended to exist and in a somewhat reverse fashion to the process you described. If a freeform action can reasonably take on the mechanical attributes of Actions that already exist in the game such as rolling a cart in front of a party member to describe your Stand Ground Action, then the narration ensues as you and your players envisioned, but it is mechanically 'absorbed' by the Action it best fits. Anything that doesn't fit into typical Actions - like distracting an enemy to boost an ally's To Hit - is just an impromptu ruling by the GM atm. I haven't heard of Wicked Ones, but magic is erring in that direction. Ars Magica 5th Edition was a heavy influence on the base system. But instead of putting points into each form or technique, you simply unlock forms and techniques with XP. The potency of spells will generate different amounts of Strain and then players roll percentiles (Strain Checks) to see if the spell has any added side effects (Wild Magic). Strain is meant to be a gentler version of magic systems where magic "comes with a price" (Once Upon a Time, Fullmetal Alchemist, Kane Chronicles). I didn't want the price to always incur, but it will steadily accumulate. Right now, there are some problems with magic: mechanically and with the way I've worded that particular document. There will be major changes that I will outline in the Community Discord today. I'd say that the game loop is about as free-form as DND and Pathfinder are. You can certainly do the more classic "dungeon, town, dungeon" (and the resting mechanics do lean in this direction), but you can also travel, etc. Yeah, combat is more similarly structured to DND and Pathfinder. You roll for initiative, then go down initiative and players/GM describe their actions, make rolls, etc. Given how dungeon-altering magic can be - players, for example, could disable the wards on a weaker dungeon and tunnel straight through it - I would say this system leans more in the direction of Combat as War. Right now I seem to be leaning towards rewarding XP when combat, clearing dungeons, or crafting occurs. However, once we get into travel more, I could foresee myself regarding XP for overcoming treacherous lands or if PCs stray from the path to seek treasure/adventure.

    This seems pretty similar to Shadow of the Demonlord or Shadow of the Weird Wizard which both have optional zone combat rules, the same kinda blocked out approach to things too. Similar to Fantasy Age too in some ways, might be worth looking into these systems.

    I definitely like the abstraction of map areas to just zones with some proximity to one another. It reminds me of Into the Odd's Close, Near, Far system, but with a little more variety. I also like that action economy is unified to a single AP system and that actions beyond raw attacks are presented to players better

    • @Drackor
      @Drackor 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Zones are actually directly inspired by the Close, Near, Far system! Although I haven't heard of Into the Odd, another game - Index Card RPG - uses the same abstraction. I liked it, but it wasn't quite what I was looking for, so I did some digging. Came across a Reddit post that explained the Zone system in-depth and I just added extra actions for strategic depth plus Pathfinder's 3 AP system for simplicity.

      @@Drackor yeah, bones works well as well. In my opinion, the order of best mechanics goes blood, bones, battery, and lastly, mox. My main strategy is urayuli beatdown. One hit from that thing gets a candle almost everytime, and running squirrels in the side deck and several meat bots and null conduits works well to get the sacrifices needed to play it. Another option is spore mice with the same

    17:14, should have hammered the saphire and played golem there, then you could made him run out of cards easier, because he probably doesnt run too many 6 costs, and that means less double gunners

    • @Drackor
      @Drackor ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, there were a lot of misplays in all three matches. Hammering blue saph was one of them. Around 18:24 I should have also blocked the double gunner cause it did more DMG. Though, I think I was thinking something along the lines of ‘he might hammer automaton and replace with steambot’. But that was just a half-baked idea cause he could have easily done the same on the other side without hammering the auto.
