Everesting Attempt: LE COL X STRAVA 8848m
I tried to take on the Le Col x Stava 8848m Challenge in a day by Everesting Leith Hill. I bit off more than I could chew, trying to smash out the challenge in 9hrs... (all I really smashed was my knees).
Will I take on another Everest? Yes...
My learnings for next time:
• Pick a longer climb with a shallower gradient.
• Don't treat it like intervals. Stay endurance.
• Dawn till dusk. Ride till it's done.

How do you ride Sa Calobra in under 30 minutes? Don't be afraid to fail and learn along the way. It took me three attempts to go sub-30. Big, fun events taking over a town or city centre so thousands of cyclists of all ages and abilities can ride safely together on a traffic-free route. They’re a great day out for families, with loads to do both on and off a bike.

I sit down with Sir Brad for a chat, ahead of his Hour Record attempt.
This is a great effort and inspiring ! ❤❤
Great effort - I do this side of Leith week in week out, great to see the elevation profile from a birdseye perspective.
I'm 66 and cycled up Sa Colobra on a normal bike so think about comments about having to do it on an e-bike...
Legend! Impressive archivement
Great Video
Great video, great effort and fully agree with clincher, thanks.
Sa Calobra is absolutely beautiful and there is no reason to try and ride it in a minimum possible time. Better take it slow and easy and enjoy the scenery. 😂
Yeap, I've been through most of those struggles on my various Everestings over the years. Not being able to eat anymore is a brutal one. And you kinda have to be used to going the distance and doing the long hours to be able to pull off something like this. Nonetheless, kudos on giving it a good old go, in spite of everything you've got going on in your life. A huge ride. I hope you'll get the chance to have another go and show that hill who's boss.
Genuine
HOLY man u give me motivation to keep push even harder ty i on fire with you video :D
Great job brother!
Good video¡ Keep it up. New subscriber from Spain. Love ur mentality
Nice video and nice words you have shared! I’m happy to see your beautiful point of view about what cycling is for us. Congrats for your PR and keep going :) greetings from mallorca
Thank you
G’Day great effort and reflection. You’ll get it done next year. Cycling is never easy that’s why we love it. I did mine over the 4 weeks. The O2 Vam rim brake nice ride. Arrogance turns to Respect 🚴
I had to stop at 4600hm could not sit for any longer. would never be able to do 9 hours, i planned with around 15 hours.
@@deDANIEL11609 would you give it another go?
@@gwinter00 maybe next year or so, need more testing I'd say. It was a bit boring, but kind of okay.
Life lesson. Very inspirational.
Great effort man! 5000m is still a great one. I'm sure next time you'll achieve it! I just subbed! I did complete my first everesting last week on Alpe du Zwift live streamed, hard as hell but the satisfaction at the end is unbelievable!
Bravo 😃💪🦵🚴♂️🚴
Great effort, Gareth. We always need to keep pushing ourselves.
Fantastic effort. I know you'd have preferred to have smashed it, but this video is a more interesting piece of content. We can all see you are fit, dude. So, getting a glimpses at the struggle is very insightful. Looking forward to the next one.
Great video. ❤
🙏
Hi Gareth, I love when you said that cycling is climbing. Living in the Alps I couldn’t agree more. Doesn’t it bother you to have rim brakes for going downhill?
I spend most of my life on a turbo trainer these days. Any kind of brake is useless. 😉
Looks like you took in too much solid food, have you tried sugar water?? I run 110g sugar and some salt in each bottle, can run 93% ftp for 100km without stomach issues, bonking or craving food
Agree sugar/salt water is great. I struggled with solids after about five and a half hours. Threw some Veloforte gels in to keep me topped up. Some learnings for my next attempt.

brutal!
Yes, Yes, Yes - representing the RIm brake!
Love your videos man. Capture what cycling is about for so many fanatics with day jobs.
Exactly. Thanks for watching, Joe.
If I had to give one piece of advice that you didn't quite touch on, it would be be realistic about your power, do some calculations on power/speed/rpm and don't be ashamed to slap on a granny gear. Being able to keep a reasonable cadence even towards the end where your power is fading is so important. Great video!
I tried to treat it like intervals. My next attempt will be treated as endurance and I’ll be throwing a 32t sprocket on the back 😆 .
Good video and better luck next time Gareth. I did this last weekend on Zwift in 13 hrs and it was tough. I can’t seem to order a jersey on the website. I hope Le Col haven’t run out already ☹
Chapeu mate, always love your challenges and tips
You’ve inspired me to get disc brakes and tubeless ❤
Ha! No punctures I two years is a pretty good track record. Sod’s Law that the one day I need a good performance is the day everything goes wrong. Leith was particularly bad that day. Like riding through shrapnel. I could have had tractor tyres and still suffered a puncture. Next attempt will be in the Peaks. Better climbs, and better drivers.
Amazing how people can be so inspired by such an idiot.
First time viewer. Video was well shot and edited. Congrats on the attempt. 10+ gradient climbs are brutal.
Want to try this next year! How much power / w/kg do you think you'd need to be able to do this? Or do you think it was all will power?
Pick a long climb with a shallow gradient. Not a 10% wall. 😆 Something in the Peak or Lake Distract, perhaps. More about endurance than w/pk. I’m pushing 4.5/5wpk at FTP and tried to treat Everesting like a smash-fest. Slow and steady is the way.
Is this the Le Col Aero Pro Jersey? How do you like it and would you buy it again? Same question about the bibs as well :D Incredible effort btw. - I'm in around 5k but doing it through the month instead of a single climb, as I don't think I would be able to sustain it. I applaud your take starting around 34:15 :)
My ending sentiment sums up the bib shorts. Just brilliant. World class. As is the aero jersey. It’s a much better cut and quality than last seasons version.
In the words of James Cameron, "Failure is an option, but fear is not."
incredible. brings back so many bad memories. well done
I asked in my local club if anyone was willing to give this a try. I could not find anyone. I could have try it myself if I knew a suitable climb for that. I knew from the beginning that I needed a very long climb with sub 5% gradient but did not know any. So now I am sticking to completing the challenge in a month with my usual cycling routine. I am half way there, it will be close finish. I may need to push at the last week if I come short of it. Great video, it made my day. Thanks!
Thanks for watching. I’m going to give it another go in September. I need a longer climb with a lower gradient. 10% gradient just burned all my matches and broke my knees after 8+ hrs. Doing this Strava challenge in a month is a big achievement in itself.
What an incredible effort. Huge kudos, as always. Super proud, but not at all surprised. 💪
gear ratio?
36 29 lowest gear
Great effort Gearing seems a little heavy
Don't be put off by trying to record x time outdoors. That's for zwift up the alpe where the playing field is more even. That has it's flaws also. Outdoors, climbs aren't remotely similar. Different lengths, gradients, road quality, how supported you are, bike weight, possible traffic, weather, more reps is more time spent turning round top and bottom - the list of variables goes on and on.
Such a tremendous effort mate, love the positivity throughout! Think it’s a lesson for us all to realise it’s ok to fail! We can always come back stronger. Cheers for the video
Wow
Amazing video! Thanks for posting. You’ve inspired me! I’ve been to Mallorca a lot but always avoided SC because I’m afraid to find out what my best effort would be… at least for now… TrainerRoad got me on the right path..
Your first effort is a benchmark to improve upon. Don't let SC win. Thanks for watching, and let me know how you get on.
You a goat 🐐🙌🏿
i recently stumbled upon your instagram page and i just wanted to say thank you for the message you are sending. i had been struggling to find my place in the sport again after a breif departure, and just needed to hear someone speak my mind and to remind me why I ride my bike. I fully agree on your philysophy toward life and how mundane and easy it is for many of us today. I would have burnt out long ago at my day job if it werent for cycling to simulate a more physically and mentally demanding senario which i find otherwise missing . Maybe that dark tunnel you go to when you are sitting at 200 BPM and holding on to dear life is inherent to counter act the symptoms of depression that come from the mundanity of today's life where survival is almost garunteed. Or maybe i just like the idea of zipping round on my bike in lycra. Either way, please keep up the good work and looking forward to your next video.
Thank you for this feedback. Through continuous introspection, I have learned that I am a warrior. I need to go to war with myself daily to find inner peace (yes, it's a contradiction-or is it just cyclical, ying and yang?). I believe humans need to be challenged, to fail, and to overcome to feel self-worth and grow. I call it "the art of getting comfortable with being uncomfortable." Cycling is the perfect way to channel this.
@@gwinter00 all the best with everything you have planned for the future. Hope we get to see a glimpse of it on the channel
Great video!!!!
Nice more videos🤟👍😁
Amazing. My PB is 48:53 and im back on the island this year, would love to break the 45 mark
You have said it out loud. Now you are accountable. Please go for it, and let me know how you get on.
Rim brakes when every second matters for sure!
Great video, inspiring and so introspective
