    Shinnen-an and the Ashizuri Pilgrimage Route Shinnen was a Koyasan saint who lived on Terajima in Osaka in the early Edo period. In 1687, he published the Shikoku Pilgrimage Guidebook Guhenro Michishirube "Shikoku Henreido Shinan" and encouraged people to take the pilgrimage, which is why he is known as the "Father of Shikoku Pilgrimage." Through fundraising, Shinnen erected over 200 stone signposts on the pilgrimage route to the 88 temples in Shikoku, and around 1682, with the help of local people, he built the Daishido Hall in Ichinose, a midpoint on the pilgrimage route that connects the difficult 37th temple, Iwamoto-ji, to the 38th temple, Kongofuku-ji, and the next temple, Enko-ji. Daishido was used by pilgrims as a place to stay and store luggage on their way back to Kongofukuji Temple at Cape Ashizuri, and was named Shinnen-an after the name of the pilgrim. Shinnen-an is an extra temple on the Shikoku Pilgrimage route, and houses statues of Daishi Daishi and Jizo Bodhisattva, as well as valuable materials related to the early modern pilgrimage, such as memorial tablets and Buddhist implements (the year of death in the fifth year of Genroku). In the temple grounds, you can see a memorial tower for Shinnen, which is inscribed with the year of death in the fifth year of Genroku (1692), as well as stone statues of the 88 sacred places of Shikoku, which were erected by local people and Hoin Jitsudo in the 1880s, as well as stone structures such as marker stones, pointing stones, and pilgrim graves. In addition, the Buddha Maeda 12th Generation (approximately 250m2) that was donated in 1705 by Kanebei Samukawa of Sanshu (Kagawa Prefecture) to hold the memorial tablets for his parents, remains to this day and is carefully managed by the locals. Shinnen-an was opened in Tosashimizu in 2019 as a historic site that conveys the faith of the common people and the pilgrimage culture of the early modern period. It was designated as a cultural asset of the city. In addition, Doan, which was worried about its deterioration, was rebuilt in February 2020 thanks to a fundraising campaign by local people. The pilgrimage route of seven ri from the Mihara junction through Shinnen-an to the 38th temple Kongofukuji is marked with 350 choishi (signpost stones) for every cho, and is called the "Ashizuri Pilgrimage Route 350 Choishi." (In Tosa, one ri is 50 cho, so one cho is about 80 meters.) These choishi were erected by people from Sakushu (Okayama Prefecture), Banshu (Hyogo Prefecture), and Setsu (Osaka Prefecture) around the end of the Edo period. The pilgrimage route has been lost due to road construction and other reasons, and the number of choishi has decreased, but about 14 kilometers of the pilgrimage route remains, and in October 2019, it was designated as a cultural asset of the city. It was selected by the city government as one of the "100 Best Historical Roads." Don, I recently discovered you through John Landers book and I am catching up on all your videos now. I recognize Fujiidera, Temple 11 but not recognizing Dogakugi. Is this a temple that goes by another name or is it something completely different? Thank you for sharing!

    • @justwalkjapan6010
      @justwalkjapan6010 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dogakuji is one of the 20 bekkaku temples (#2). There are actually over 200 sacred places associated with the pilgrimage. A group of 20 of these established themselves as the 20 bekkaku (other numbered) about 50 years ago.

    Building up a fire of that size in the wooden temples we've been seeing gives me the willies. From the echos, it seemed like it was inside?

    • @justwalkjapan6010
      @justwalkjapan6010 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but there is a hood above which is, I think, designed for negative air pressure. You notice how vertical the fire is. Also, the wood is very well-cured. When they do larger versions of this ceremony outdoors, the smoke blows randomly with the wind. Inside, it always seems very well disciplined.

      Too many. Some nights I've had to call four or five different inns to find a room. Some days I haven't been able to take the route I want because there's no room available at all!

  • @michaelarighi5268
    @michaelarighi5268 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Seeing a fair number of pilgrims engaging in a communal ritual, I guess the question that comes to my mind is: How do the temples and the pilgrimages work to reinforce the "kami" of Japan? It seems like those traditions are still fairly strong? The other thing I notice is the wood. Mostly simple softwoods, it looks like, but deceptively simple finishes. In other words, they look simple, but probably aren't--particularly the smoothness achieved and the minimal sheen. Beautiful grains. And the carvings are often quite masterful. I've seen some videos of the refurbishment of temples--which seems an ongoing thing--and the skill with use of traditional non-powered tools is awe-inspiring. Not awe-inspiring enough for me to give up my power tools, though.

    • @justwalkjapan6010
      @justwalkjapan6010 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The wood working techniques I know nothing about. The relationship between Buddhism and native Japanese gods is fascinating and complex. When you have a few hours . . .

      I don't think so. I've seen many yamakagashi, but none were at all brown like this. However, a slight pattern of color is visible through the brown, so it's possible. Tomorrow night I'll show the picture to a local mountain expert.
